Purchased this lens almost as soon as it came out and it is an improvement over my 17-35. I do not miss the one stop while on the tripod. The quality is excellent so I do not feel as though I have really lost anything there either. When looking at D3x image previews in Lightroom, I usually have to look at the metadata if I want to know if I used my 24-70 2.8 or this lens, so I again feel no sense of loss.

The improvements for me are in how I work in the field. Most of my work, probably 90%+, is on the tripod but I do have a project that I have been working on that requires me to hand hold while shooting in dark, confined spaces. Flash is generally not practical for these scenarios. I can dial my D3 or D700 up to 3200ish but sometimes that is still not enough. This lens gives me an additional 2-4 stops (depending on how stable I am on a give day) to work with in these situations. This lens is also an improvement for me in my camera bag while in the field as it is nearly identical in size to the 24-70 2.8. This spring I was shooting in the rain out in the Olympics. If I needed to switch lenses, I could put the 24-70 2.8 (which is usually attached to the camera body) in the spot where the 16-35 had been and then put the body back in the bag with this lens, with no adjustments in my bag required. No need to do another lens change in the rain.

So, is it an improvement over the 17-35 2.8? Well yes, provided you have a need to shoot hand-held in low light conditions and provided you are also a 24-70 2.8 user when in the field. In a studio environment? Well, maybe not although, I would not hesitate to use this lens in the studio either. This lens has effectively retired my 17-35mm.

Nice lens, sharp, fast etc. but..... the distortion is awful! All ultra wide angle lenses usually show a considerable amount of barrel distortion but this lens at 16mm is too much for its price. It only gets better above 20mm. The pincushion distortion at 35mm is not great either. The most surprising of all is that the 'Auto Distortion' correction is not available in Nikon Capture NX2 (2.2.4) while NEF files photographed with other lenses do. I called Nikon and they admit the software does not support the lens (yet). I'm not sure if the problem is in the Nikon Capture NX2 software or in the firmware from my D3s. The lens is great except when you do real-estate photography and you don't want to go trough Photoshop to correct each photo.

Last, being able to use filters is nice indeed, except at 16mm. The filter edges show in the corners at 16mm, so be sure to get ultra thin filter treading when you buy filters or shoot at 17mm.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:

I'm not much of zoom fan but need them sometimes. I have tried a number of Nikon zooms including the 28-300, the 24-85 and the 18-35. None measured up to my standards. The 16-35 does. At 24mm, for example, it rivals my Nikon 24/f.28. Using Adobe RAW's lens profiles, chromatic aberration and distortion are well controlled. at 5.6 and above, corner sharpness is quite good.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:

When I was debating on which wide angle zoom to get for my D700, I was up against the 14-24, 17-35 and this 16-35.

I shoot mainly landscape so the 14-24 doesn't help when I need my ND, grads or polarizers. The 17-35 is a much more expensive lens but has F/2.8, so while the 16-35 is a bit slower at F/4 the VR-II makes up entirely for it! I'm not planning on shooting sports or moving objects in low light, I have my 85mm 1.4 for that or my 70-200.

I can still get some nice bokeh effects if I go close enough to my subject and shoot at F/4, or if I need to go to 35mm. But otherwise it's a great sharp lens. Distortion isn't an issue with me at 16mm, you can correct it easily in PS. Though I really don't find it that bothersome. I'm not shooting walls or straight lines.

The only thing that I'd wish they did was make it less heavy. Though it's lighter than both 14-24 and 17-35, it's still no lightweight. Compared to say my 50mm 1.8 or 1.4, it's a stone, but of course not as heavy as the 70-200.

Overall, I would recommend this to someone that wants to use filters with a wide zoom and doesn't really care much about shooting moving subjects in low light or straight lines!

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:

I photograph a variety of subjects, from edges of bodies of water to landscapes to details. Even though the Nikon 14-24 F/2.8 is 2mm wider, slightly sharper and a stop faster, it is more expensive, prone to flare as the front element is very convex and has no filter threads. I didn't think the difference in sharpness between the two lenses at F5/6 or F/8 was significant and the less flare and ability to use ND filters was more important. In addition, the 14-24 does not have VR while the 16-35 does. That, too, is a feature of convenience that has value. Finally, anytime I can save a few hundred dollars and accomplish the task at hand, I will do that also. I would recommend this lens to anyone who needs an extremely wide angle lens.

I used this lens when I visited NYC during the day and at night. This is a great lens which I strongly recommend for landscape or pictures in a city. It has quite a lot of distortion but with wide angle ... No choice. This can easly be corrected with capture nx2. I wish I had bought it earlier.

I was really amazed by this lens.
            Its amazingly sharp lens (!)
Fast focusing and able to focus really close to the subject almost macro.

I had the 14-24 2.8 before a for a month. and for my use this lens is a better choice.

The bad things about this lens:
Long lens, takes some space in your bag.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:

I have only recently purchased this lens, but plan to use it primarily for landscape photography. So far, what I've experienced has been good. The images are sharp, the lens focuses really quickly. I haven't looked at things like distortion yet though. My only real problem is that it feels much heavier than I expected it to. Coupled with my D300s, it really is quite uncomfortable to carry around my neck while out walking and I'm unlikely to take it hiking or backpacking with me, which is unfortunately where most of the good scenic shots I see in my minds eye are. I am a woman of medium build though, so it might not feel as heavy for someone else.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:

I'm not a super-savvy technical reviewer, but I opted for this lens over the more expensive and similar F2.8 (which I rented for a week). Bang for the buck, with the VR, and minus the hefty size/weight — this lens wins by a long shot. Sure, there are times I'd like less depth of field...but as a wide angle I'm mainly using this lens for outside shooting, so no big deal. For indoor, I'll use my fixed 28mm. Images are sharp (really sharp). Don't forget to purchase SLIM filters for this lens.

I'm a landscape enthusiast and this lens is now my primary lens for landscapes. Very sharp, little or no distortion and light. Plus it takes filters and has VR II. Highly recommend this lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Wide Angle Zoom Lens:

Had the choice between the two UWA lenses and picked this one for starters. Great for landscape photography and buildings but for the latter, requires distortion correction. I've actually taken some of my best work with this lense and ND filters. I think for the indoor architectural shots, I would prefer the 14-24mm.
