The sleek and stylish Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver) offers many features that help you take impressive-looking pictures. The camera might be ultra-slim (only 0.7", 17.8mm) but the 10.2 Megapixel Exmor R CMOS chip will allow you to make big prints. The camera performs very well under low lighting via its High Sensitivity mode (ISO 3200), Handheld Twilight mode and Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization.

Fast moving subjects are not a problem since the camera can capture 10 frames-per-second. This, along with Motion Detection that adjusts ISO sensitivity and increases the shutter speed when motion is detected, will help ensure that you capture the decisive moment. To really see your subject in motion, the TX5 can capture your videos via the HD Movie mode (720p).

The large 3.0" wide touch screen color display allows easy operation and viewing of images and movies stills, even underwater at depths up to 10' (3 m). The display gives you the ability to select the focus point with a simple touch, scroll through images by sliding your finger across the screen, and one-touch access to the menu. And, shooting in a tight space, the 25mm wide-angle Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x zoom lens will let you get your shot. Other user friendly features include Intelligent Sweep Panorama, Face Detection, Smile Shutter, Anti-blink, iAudio and many more.

We don't recommend dropping any camera, but don't worry (too much) if the TX5 should slip from your hand; it is shockproof for falls up to approximately 5' (1.5 m) and with its airtight construction it is dustproof as well.

Rugged and Stylish
Just 0.75" (17.7mm) thin, the sleek and stylish TX5 fits the slimmest pocket or purse, yet is waterproof to a depth of 10' (3 m), shockproof from falls up to approximately 5' (1.5 m) and dustproof thanks to its airtight construction. As well, this durable camera can even withstand extreme weather conditions, as it is operable in temperatures from 14 - 104°F (-10 - 40°C).
10.2 Megapixel Back-Illuminated Exmor R CMOS Image Sensor
The DSC-TX5 features a 10.2 Megapixel Exmor R CMOS image sensor that brings out the full resolving power of the camera's Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens to deliver extremely fast speed, high resolution, and stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain. In addition, the combined Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ image processor delivers extremely fast 10fps, Anti-motion Blur, and Handheld Twilight modes.
BIONZ Image Processor
The BIONZ image processor delivers the high resolution and fast performance you expect from a Sony digital camera. Fast processing enables unique Sony features such as Sweep Panorama, Handheld Twilight, Anti-motion Blur, and HDR to take and combine multiple images in less than a second to create wide panoramic images. Images have reduced grain and appear less washed out.
Wide Zoom Display
To use the entire image area of your compatible HDTV screen (sold separately), Wide Zoom display automatically expands standard 4:3 and 3:2 images to 16:9.
Backlight Correction HDR
Shooting high-contrast scenes can often lead to washed out backgrounds and/or details lost in shadow. Backlight Correction HDR helps correct for this by taking two pictures at different exposure settings and processing the best elements of both into a single image for more natural looking shots.
Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens with 25mm Equivalent Wide 4x Optical Zoom
The high-performance Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x optical zoom lens brings distant subjects closer for video recording as well as for outdoor, sports, and travel photos, and close-ups up to just under 0.39" (1cm) from the subject. A 25mm equivalent wide-angle lens allows you to take wider shots of a scene or a group in crowded spaces.
Easy Touch Screen Interaction
The DSC-TX5 offers intuitive functions on the 3.0" (230K pixels) multi-purpose touch screen, such as the ability to select the focus point with a simple touch, scroll through images by sliding your finger across the screen and one-touch access to the Menu. The display also features improved readability with list view and index view.
Card Slots
For convenient storage and sharing of your images, the DSC-TX5 accepts Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo media (sold separately) plus SD and SDHC media.
Intelligent AF
Thanks to Intelligent AF technology, capture fleeting moments like a child's adorable expression with the ultra-quick AF which locks focus in as little as 0.3 sec.
Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to detect camera shake and automatically shifts the lens to help prevent blur without sacrificing image quality.
Anti-Motion Blur Mode
Capture cleaner and sharper images in low light for non landscape shots. When set in Anti-motion Blur mode, the DSC-TX5 captures six images in a fraction of a second with a higher shutter speed and combines the data from all six to create a single image of extraordinary detail and eliminate subject blur, beyond the capability of traditional cameras.
Handheld Twilight
Capture cleaner and sharper night shots without using a tripod. When set to Handheld Twilight mode, the DSC-TX5 captures six images in a fraction of a second with one press of the shutter, and combines the data from all six to create a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise. With these modes, you can capture images in low light without flash beyond the capability of traditional cameras.
High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200)
High ISO allows for faster shutter speed, so you can take photos indoors or in low light without the need for a flash. In addition to High Sensitivity mode (ISO), you can select up to seven ISO settings (Auto, 125, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200) when shooting in Program Auto mode to adjust sensitivity to your shooting conditions.
Scene Modes
The DSC-TX5 features 12 convenient scene modes: High Sensitivity, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap, Landscape, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, High Speed Shutter, Underwater, Gourmet, and Pet.
Backlight Correction HDR
Shooting high-contrast scenes can often lead to washed out backgrounds and/or details lost in shadow. Backlight Correction HDR helps correct for this by taking two pictures at different exposure settings and processing the best elements of both into a single image for more natural looking shots.
Easy Shooting Mode
With Easy Shooting mode, even beginners can take great photos. In Easy Shooting mode, easy-to-understand basic instructions are displayed on the LCD screen and the camera switches to all automatic settings, removing several function choices and allowing you to focus on just your subject. Since this mode works together with Intelligent Scene Recognition, the camera selects the optimum setting for each scene. In addition, the Easy Shooting mode simplifies Preview mode.
Intelligent (iAuto) Auto Mode
Unlike traditional auto mode, Intelligent Auto (iAuto) mode thinks for you, recognizing scenes, lighting conditions, and faces, and adjusts settings resulting in clearer images, faces with more natural skin tone, and less blur. By incorporating advanced features such as Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, iAuto mode lets you take advantage of the latest Sony Cyber-shot technology without leaving auto mode. Whether you're shooting landscapes, capturing a beautiful flower, or taking pictures at an in-door birthday party or wedding shower, iAuto mode will optimize your camera's settings to help ensure you come away with a great shot.
Intelligent Sweep Panorama Mode
Capture expansive landscapes with Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode. Press shutter and sweep and the camera does the rest, continuously, shooting images and in one second stitching them together. This model even detects faces and moving subjects to stitch intelligently different widths to help avoid subject distortion.
Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode
Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects nine different types of scenes and, within just 1/30th of a second, selects the appropriate camera settings: Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a tripod, Portrait, Landscape, Macro, and Close Focus. iSCN has two modes: Auto and Advanced. In Auto mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. In Advanced mode, the camera takes a photo with the optimal settings and, if in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with another optimized setting so you can choose which to keep.
Face Detection Technology
Face Detection technology detects up to 8 individual faces and adjusts focus, exposure, and flash to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends.
Motion Detection
Motion Detection, along with Face Motion Detection, adjusts ISO sensitivity and increases the shutter speed when movement is detected, reducing blur in moving subjects and faces.
Smile Shutter Technology
Smile Shutter technology captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply press the Smile Shutter button and the camera does the rest. Intelligent Scene Recognition can now be used together with Smile Shutter mode when the Intelligent Auto mode is on. This means that beautiful smiles can be captured with settings optimized for the particular scene, even in difficult conditions such as twilight and backlighting.
Anti-Blink Function
It's frustrating to think you've captured that perfect shot, only to review it later and discover one of your subjects blinked just as you pressed the shutter. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting or blinking. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot.
High Speed Shooting
The DSC-TX5 can capture full 10.2 megapixel resolution images at up to 10 frames per second, helping to ensure that you capture the decisive moment such as the soccer ball flying into the goal. In addition, the DSC-TX7 employs a mechanical shutter that helps reduce distortion when continuously shooting moving subjects.
PhotoTV HD
Bring your photos to life and enjoy highly detailed, high definition images with PhotoTV HD-capable Sony BRAVIA HDTVs. PhotoTV HD fine tunes settings on your PhotoTV HD enabled BRAVIA HDTV, such as sharpness, gradation, and color to display images that look more like printed
In-Camera Retouching Tools
Retouch and enhance your photos on the go with in-camera trimming and Red-Eye Correction functions
PhotoMusic
PhotoMusic combines images with music (4 tracks, 5 minutes per track) to produce fun and entertaining slide shows with standard visual effects (Simple, Nostalgic, Active, and Stylish). Select from pre-loaded tracks on the camera or transfer your own from your compatible computer (sold separately).
Imported music tracks can be up to five minutes long. When using Music Transfer to download music, tracks longer than five minutes will be reduced to five minutes when uploading to the Cyber-shot camera.
Creative Painting Tools
Decorate your photos with words and drawings using the included paint pen or your finger. Have fun using more than 30 stamps and 15 types of picture frames and save new images at up to 5 megapixel resolution.
Function Guide
This beginner-friendly optional function helps navigate through the various functions and settings displaying the description of chosen functions or settings on the LCD screen.
Lithium-ion Battery
Included lithium-ion battery provides added convenience with longer lasting power than alkaline batteries (capacity of 230 images or approx. 115 minutes).
Includes Sony PMBP (Picture Motion Browser) Software
With the pre-installed Picture Motion Browser (PMB) Portable software the DSC-TX5 makes it easy to pre-select videos and images in the camera and conveniently upload them from the camera to a compatible PC and popular internet sharing sites without the need for any additional software or install.

I received this camera a couple of weeks ago. I bought this camera after my sister dropped my old Sony camera into a creek. -ha- So I decided I better go waterproof on my next camera just to be on the safe side.

So far, the TX5 has been a wonder. There are so many things you can do with it ( Panoramas, Underwater, HD Movies, etc. ). The picture quality is very good, and the movie mode has been very impressive. I've shot a couple of photos in low light, and generally, I think it takes better photos than my old camera.

The one nick pick thing I have to say is the battery/memory card door. I guess since the camera's waterproof, the door has to be very tight against the body of the camera. This means you have to press it pretty hard to completely close it, and I'm afraid one day it's just going to break.

But, overall, I'm very satisfied.

I bought this camera for 2 months and finally used the video recording function 2 days ago. I previously tested the camera and tested the video function when I received the camera and the lengths of the video were approx 5 minutes. Those videos were fine. Two days ago, I recorded an important event with different segments: two lasted about 10 minutes. When I finished and pressed replay, the smaller video clips were fine but there is a busy signal and the videos cannot be played with the 10 minutes clips. There were 2 smaller clips about 1 minute and when I turned to replay mode, there is blue screen with a message: "File error." I called Sony and went through technical support for 2 hours without any problem solved. I am computer savvy and those instructions did not help at all. Next thing I know, Sony asked me I can send the memory card to a company and get the files recovered and I will have to pay for the service.
The camera looks nice and the slider covering the lens is very useful compared to Canon or Pentax version. However, if I had another chance, I would have bought Canon or even the Lumix. I actually haven't submerge this Sony camera in water to test b/c it looks too delicate and afraid the water might leak inside.
The pictures are nice if you take pictures of the scenery. However, when you take pictures of humans, the skin colors looked terrible and lost a lot of facial details. Looked like someone patched up your skin with paint. The bottom line: Watch out for the error and if you don't mind the unprotected lens (you can put in a case), buy a waterproof camera with a different brand.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver):

If you believe that the best camera is the one you have with you, then this is a great camera. It is small, so you'll always take it with you. It is rugged, so you won't hesitate to take it hiking or to the beach. And it has no perceptible shutter lag, so you can keep up with kids/critters. The main problems are (1) image quality is just barely acceptable at anything over ISO 125 and (2) when shooting movies, the battery life is awful.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver):

I've owned many Sony Cyber-Shots in the past and have been very happy with them. Well, all except when I would accidently drop them and then they cease to function properly afterwards. So I was glad to see that Sony came out with one that was shock-proof and water-proof. The best feature on the Cyber-Shots I've owned in the past was the touchscreen. I like the fact that the entire screen is touchscreen. And I think Sony was the only I could find that had this feature. So needless to say it was an easy decision to purchase this one. I would recommend this camera to my friends.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver):

Bought this waterproof camera to use on upcoming rafting trip. Have enjoyed getting to know it. The manual that comes with it is not very complete, but the accompanying DVD has a much more complete manual to download, and I have found it very helpful. The camera's touch screen is easy to use and responsive. I have some concern about being able to see the LCD display in outdoor, high light situations, but will know more after more use.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver):

Just had this camera for a short time and so far it has met all my needs nicely and then some.
Needing quick shots both under and above water while trying to capture the fly fishermen's expressions and the release of the fish is not an easy task.
The easy to understand touch screen makes for fast work. I find, for the most part, this camera takes care of the settings, all I need to do is to be sure the subjects are in the screen and click.

As for no view finder, it'll just take time to get used of not having one.

Battery life, I believe it's as good as it can be while taking into account all the functions and features we are asking it to perform.

The touch screen takes some getting used to. When positioning the camera, especially under water, I sometimes run a finger over the screen and inadvertently change the setting. More time using this camera will eliminate that.
Joys of being a fly fishing guide!

Some concern for the water proof doors. They seem to be deilcate for the battery/mem card and the seperate small door for the usb cable: I prefer to use a card reader so I won't use the small door very often for the usb connector. Maybe in the future, Sony can have one door access the battery, card and usb jack.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver):

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver):

I was leary at first because there were several recomended models from 2010 Camera Review. Among them, Sony TX5 had the most sleek design along with the great reviews. I was glad I picked Sony TX5 over other models because touch screen came in handy. Image quality was awesome.
