The sleek and stylish Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver) offers many features that help you take impressive-looking pictures. The camera might be ultra-slim (only 0.7", 17.8mm) but the 10.2 Megapixel Exmor R CMOS chip will allow you to make big prints. The camera performs very well under low lighting via its High Sensitivity mode (ISO 3200), Handheld Twilight mode and Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization.
Fast moving subjects are not a problem since the camera can capture 10 frames-per-second. This, along with Motion Detection that adjusts ISO sensitivity and increases the shutter speed when motion is detected, will help ensure that you capture the decisive moment. To really see your subject in motion, the TX5 can capture your videos via the HD Movie mode (720p).
The large 3.0" wide touch screen color display allows easy operation and viewing of images and movies stills, even underwater at depths up to 10' (3 m). The display gives you the ability to select the focus point with a simple touch, scroll through images by sliding your finger across the screen, and one-touch access to the menu. And, shooting in a tight space, the 25mm wide-angle Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x zoom lens will let you get your shot. Other user friendly features include Intelligent Sweep Panorama, Face Detection, Smile Shutter, Anti-blink, iAudio and many more.
We don't recommend dropping any camera, but don't worry (too much) if the TX5 should slip from your hand; it is shockproof for falls up to approximately 5' (1.5 m) and with its airtight construction it is dustproof as well.

I received this camera a couple of weeks ago. I bought this camera after my sister dropped my old Sony camera into a creek. -ha- So I decided I better go waterproof on my next camera just to be on the safe side.
So far, the TX5 has been a wonder. There are so many things you can do with it ( Panoramas, Underwater, HD Movies, etc. ). The picture quality is very good, and the movie mode has been very impressive. I've shot a couple of photos in low light, and generally, I think it takes better photos than my old camera.
The one nick pick thing I have to say is the battery/memory card door. I guess since the camera's waterproof, the door has to be very tight against the body of the camera. This means you have to press it pretty hard to completely close it, and I'm afraid one day it's just going to break.
But, overall, I'm very satisfied.

I bought this camera for 2 months and finally used the video recording function 2 days ago. I previously tested the camera and tested the video function when I received the camera and the lengths of the video were approx 5 minutes. Those videos were fine. Two days ago, I recorded an important event with different segments: two lasted about 10 minutes. When I finished and pressed replay, the smaller video clips were fine but there is a busy signal and the videos cannot be played with the 10 minutes clips. There were 2 smaller clips about 1 minute and when I turned to replay mode, there is blue screen with a message: "File error." I called Sony and went through technical support for 2 hours without any problem solved. I am computer savvy and those instructions did not help at all. Next thing I know, Sony asked me I can send the memory card to a company and get the files recovered and I will have to pay for the service.
The camera looks nice and the slider covering the lens is very useful compared to Canon or Pentax version. However, if I had another chance, I would have bought Canon or even the Lumix. I actually haven't submerge this Sony camera in water to test b/c it looks too delicate and afraid the water might leak inside.
The pictures are nice if you take pictures of the scenery. However, when you take pictures of humans, the skin colors looked terrible and lost a lot of facial details. Looked like someone patched up your skin with paint. The bottom line: Watch out for the error and if you don't mind the unprotected lens (you can put in a case), buy a waterproof camera with a different brand.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver):
If you believe that the best camera is the one you have with you, then this is a great camera. It is small, so you'll always take it with you. It is rugged, so you won't hesitate to take it hiking or to the beach. And it has no perceptible shutter lag, so you can keep up with kids/critters. The main problems are (1) image quality is just barely acceptable at anything over ISO 125 and (2) when shooting movies, the battery life is awful.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Still Digital Camera (Silver):
I've owned many Sony Cyber-Shots in the past and have been very happy with them. Well, all except when I would accidently drop them and then they cease to function properly afterwards. So I was glad to see that Sony came out with one that was shock-proof and water-proof. The best feature on the Cyber-Shots I've owned in the past was the touchscreen. I like the fact that the entire screen is touchscreen. And I think Sony was the only I could find that had this feature. So needless to say it was an easy decision to purchase this one. I would recommend this camera to my friends.

Bought this waterproof camera to use on upcoming rafting trip. Have enjoyed getting to know it. The manual that comes with it is not very complete, but the accompanying DVD has a much more complete manual to download, and I have found it very helpful. The camera's touch screen is easy to use and responsive. I have some concern about being able to see the LCD display in outdoor, high light situations, but will know more after more use.

Just had this camera for a short time and so far it has met all my needs nicely and then some.
Needing quick shots both under and above water while trying to capture the fly fishermen's expressions and the release of the fish is not an easy task.
The easy to understand touch screen makes for fast work. I find, for the most part, this camera takes care of the settings, all I need to do is to be sure the subjects are in the screen and click.
As for no view finder, it'll just take time to get used of not having one.
Battery life, I believe it's as good as it can be while taking into account all the functions and features we are asking it to perform.
The touch screen takes some getting used to. When positioning the camera, especially under water, I sometimes run a finger over the screen and inadvertently change the setting. More time using this camera will eliminate that.
Joys of being a fly fishing guide!
Some concern for the water proof doors. They seem to be deilcate for the battery/mem card and the seperate small door for the usb cable: I prefer to use a card reader so I won't use the small door very often for the usb connector. Maybe in the future, Sony can have one door access the battery, card and usb jack.

I was leary at first because there were several recomended models from 2010 Camera Review. Among them, Sony TX5 had the most sleek design along with the great reviews. I was glad I picked Sony TX5 over other models because touch screen came in handy. Image quality was awesome.
