Sleek, sharp, and compact, the Octane 7 Computer Speaker System from Altec Lansing delivers stellar full-range sound with a unique setup that won't break the bank. This 2.1 channel system of two satellite speakers and one subwoofer is ideal for amplifying the sound on your computer via the main input jack. However, it also features an auxiliary input jack so that you can quickly and easily connect your MP3 player or iPod. To get started, simply connect a 3.5 mm cable from the headphone jack of your MP3 or iPod to the auxiliary input jack for the speakers and you're ready to go. For tweaking your sound, the system has built-in treble, bass, and volume controls.
In terms of this system's setup, wide sound dispersion is the name of the game. To achieve that dispersion, Altec Lansing has taken the unique approach of building one hidden, down-firing mid-range driver into the bottom of each satellite speaker. These drivers spread mid-range frequencies in all directions by bouncing sound waves off the surface on which the satellite speakers sit. The effect is an enveloping, warm mid-range sound. Beyond that range, each satellite speaker boasts two, high frequency micro drivers for crisp, clear highs. The system also boasts a separately-powered side-firing sub-woofer for serious bass. All told, the Octane 7 is an affordable, compact system that packs a strong full-range sound for use with your computer or MP3 player.

Bought these as replacement speakers for my kids computer. Sound is average or better, bass response is great, trebles clear and sharp. The design is what drew me and they did not disappoint. The only shortcoming was no protection cover on the sub woofer. Like most people the sub is under the desk and he/we always put our feet up. I cut a piec od plastic, drilled some holes and installed over the sub with som standoffs. Worth the effort. Piece of mind and great sound. And the fastest delivery from B&H for no additional charge. Thanks B&H!!

Based upon the appearance and engineering idea, I had thought this would have a great quality sound. Not so. The tweeters in the "tower" part are nice and crisp, but the midrange sounds brittle and there is way too much bass from the sub. Not only that, there is a resonance that on certain songs makes your eardrums vibrate. I spent hours with the speakers Bass / Treble mix and the soundcards eq and finally got it respectable... but until they really improve the sound quality, I wouldn't suggest it.

As others have mentioned somewhat bassey, that aside fine with me.
Comments about Altec Lansing Octane 7 Computer Speaker System w/ Subwoofer:
I use the speakers to stream radio broadcasts, watch video, and listen to music. The speakers are pretty clear, and don't have much distortion. They are not incredibly loud.

Comments about Altec Lansing Octane 7 Computer Speaker System w/ Subwoofer:
I bought this system because my monitor's
speakers were so tiny that I couldn't stand them.
The system arrived quickly (2 days by ground). Set
up is just plain simple. Follow the picture directions on the inside flap of the box.
After I connected the system I used the graphic
equalizer feature in my PC to adjust the highs and the midrange frequencies. I tried adjusting the low frequencies with the equalizer but didn't
like the way it sounded. Iused the bass control on
the satellite speaker to set the bass the way I like it and it worked fine. If you don't have the equalizer feature in your computer the seperate bass and treble controls on the satellite really come in handy. The volume control on the satellite
is great too. Just reach over (no playing around
with the mouse.)
I read a few reviews that said, because the midrange speakers fire down, the sound bounces around too much. I have my satellites on a tempered glass desktop and have no complaints about this.
I couldn't be any more pleased with this system
considering the great price I got it for from B&H.

I replaced an old subwoofer and speakers and noticed a much better dynamic range from this setup. The two funnel-shaped speakers feature a tweeter plus a mid-range horn that faces down and reflects off the hard surface of my computer desk. Controls are handy on the right speaker, and the on/off rocker switch is on the subwoofer. I am happy with the size and the sound. Since I use a computer hutch and place the smaller speakers on the top shelf, I could use a couple extra feet of wire since they plug into the floor-based subwoofer. Other than that, I am solidly pleased and feel it's a great value for the price.

This system was perfect for my intended purpose.I needed a decent sound system for a gaming computer and xbox 360 in the kids game room. The room is 9x11.I didn't want to spend a ton or over power the adjoining family room. The only down side(minus 1 star)is the midrange speakers point down.I knew this going in and since he sits close to speakers to game its not a problem.I connected the computer to audio in 3.5mm jack and xbox via hdmi to alienware monitor which has self detect.hence no unplugging and reconnecting speakers

I bought these speakers to connect to the airport express router to play music wirelessly. The speakers are attractive and work great. Seems like good value for the money.
The only problem I have is with the bass. The bass is overpowering for music listening. When the bass control is turned all the way down this problem is less of an issue.

Comments about Altec Lansing Octane 7 Computer Speaker System w/ Subwoofer:
I purchased these speakers for use in my dorm room for general purpose music listening and for use as monitors for light video editing. The speakers have a great low end punch (the walls were literally vibrating with the bass) but they can be turned down considerably without sacrificing the audio quality. I like the stable, bottom weighted design of the satellites and they fit well on my crowded desk, blending in with the rest of my peripherals. All in all, I think they are a good buy. If they last as long as my other Altec Lansing speakers, I will be really happy with them.
