The Ion Tape Express Portable Cassette-To-MP3 Player is and does exactly what its name says. It looks like a Walkman from the 70s or 80s but in addition to a headphone jack it's got a USB port. Install the included software onto your PC or Macintosh computer, plug in your Ion via the included USB cord and start moving your classic cassette tracks into the 21st Century.
It's got a headphone jack and it can optionally run on two AA batteries so if you're feeling nostalgic you can listen to cassettes on the go just like you (or your mom and dad) did back in the day.

I ordered this unit so that I could convert a bunch of old cassette tapes that a friend found in his garage. Some of the tapes are more than 40 years old, so I wasn't expecting much. The cassette player worked just fine, and I got a surprisingly good quality transfer from the cassettes. My computer recognized the USB connection as "plug and play", so there was no problem there.
The only negative comment I have is about the software that's included in the package. The GUI is ugly, and when you select a check box, no check appears to let you know you've selected it. You kind of have to take it on faith. Also, I found that after recording a track, when you choose to option to "record another track", the audio signal from the USB is lost, and you have to quit the program and restart to get it back.
It would be nice to have the option to choose a destination folder for where the MP3 file goes. Right now, it is automatically loaded into your iTunes folder (which is okay, but not where I really wanted it).
Overall, I'd say that the hardware worked great, and the software is useable, but not much more. Given the low price of this unit, I would definitely recommend it.

Worth the money?
I finally decided to do something with a bunch of old tapes I uncovered - most are pre-recorded tapes I purchased and some are tapes I made from vinyl tracks.

I finally decided to do something with a bunch of old tapes I uncovered - most are pre-recorded tapes I purchased and some are tapes I made from vinyl tracks.
Not having a tape player, I went with this unit because of its price and its USB connection (so I can record to my laptop and hopefully clean up the noise with software).
Although the unit is a bit flimsy, it does what I need it to do.
The first tape I tried was a tape I had made almost thirty years ago.It amazes me what we used to put up with in terms of pops, clicks and scratches! The sound is only as good as the source.
Remember that this runs on AA batteries (it does have a 3V adapter connection)and they can run low in the middle of a recording. Best to use the 3V adapter or put in(good)fresh batteries at your discretion. A "low battery"indicator would be helpful, but I wouldn't expect it at this price.

I purchased this product as a birthday gift for my dad since I'm too selfish to give him my own. (Since I also convert my tapes to mp3 format for my ipod).
He got his to play his casettes in the car. (He doesn't own a computer since he's past technology. Such as computer's, cable, etc). The only thing I recommend is getting a USB car charger so that you are not wasting battery life.
If you are into gadgets, you'll enjoy this product. Also the computer format to edit your tracks are easy.

This little walkman-sized device was a snap to set up and a breeze to convert some old tapes I had to MP3's. I would highly recommend this product to any level of expertise...Very easy instructions to follow as well.

The product I am using to digitize a cassette tape collection.
Works according to what I wanted, without more, no less.
It is a consumer good or amateur team, that does not require many complications.
The information is transmitted via USB, no hassle, fully recognized by the operating systems, including Linux.
The sound capture software can be free even called Audacity. It's simple and lightweight.
Or review the software that brings the team because they already had Audacity.
I could say that professionals can use it, but with specific software functions. The program I mentioned can be tedious to edit the tape noise.
Very grateful to have made this team. Thanks to friends ION

This product feels very cheap, as if it will break really easily, while the tape was still playing the software will stop recording, there is no way to resume a recording (you have to start the recording all over). After one week of very little use the product stopped working and the Manufacturer would not want to honor their Warranty. ION's customer service reps are disrespectful, rude, they ask a lot of personal information to harass you with it through multiple calls or emails. [...]

Comments about Ion Tape Express Portable Cassette-To-MP3 Player:
Compact, portable, this converter is the most user friendly I've found.
I am one of those "die-hard" cassette owners.
If you are as well, you know that over time they degrade, no matter how well you take care of them!
The Ion Cassette-To-MP3 Player is so simple,
all you have to do is click and go!
Some of the music I have on cassette is rare and priceless ,so it gives me great peace of mind knowing that they are now digitalised, not to mention that i can now share my collection online!
I also like the bonus feature that it doubles as a portable cassette player!
A caution, please, as with any devise your using, KEEP THEM CLEAN!.
Tapehead cleaners are a must.
Your old cassettes become full of dust, oils, and grime with time.
All of that dirt transfers onto whatever devise you are playing them thru, very quickly!
Overall, if your looking for a cassette converter that is easy, fast and you dont want to spend hundreds of dollars needlessly,
THIS IS THE ONE!
...If you enjoy this ION product, I highly recommend the ION MixMeister EZ Vinyl Tape Converter! You can finally digitalise all your LP'S and be able to presearve them...FOREVER!

Comments about Ion Tape Express Portable Cassette-To-MP3 Player:
The price is reasonable, but proof that you get what you pay for. There is a thumping noise that takes away from most transfers whether the tapes were copied or prerecorded. This thumping does not occur with the same tapes on other cassette players. Although the company responded within two days, the problem wasn't resolved. For the price, I guess I shouldn't expect much more, but I do.

Comments about Ion Tape Express Portable Cassette-To-MP3 Player:
It plugs into the computer, and reads the cassette tapes as it converts them into itune files. The only problem I have with it is that if the songs are long, it will stop after 30 minutes to create tracks, but the music keeps on playing. So one has to watch with longer tapes. The first time I used the item, it didn't recognize the different tracks, and instead had one whole one with 4 songs on it, but when I redid it, with the same tape, it did it correctly. Since then it has performed as expected on every tape we have converted.I would recommend this to anyone who has tons of cassettes at home, and wishes they could recover some of their favorite songs.

Comments about Ion Tape Express Portable Cassette-To-MP3 Player:
For the price a good buy. I had about 20 hours of cassettes to go through so it was okay for that. I question if it would be built well enough for a larger project. Works okay and satisfied with results. I would buy it again.
Also there is no counter so cueing the tape up was a pain. I found it was better to buy another program to trim the clip.

It does transfer music to the PC. However, at first, it wouldn't let me record to disk. Had to try it at least 10 times before it worked. Now it's fine. Converter itself seems to be loose inside. Once the tape starts, you can't move the converter at all. Quality of CD that was created is just as good as the tape.

It' works very poorly, I have tried to convert some high quality classical music tapes but ... a waste of time, quality of sound is very bad and it does not work very well at all in terms of recognizing the traks. I'm asking to return it.

The product feels really plastiky and cheap, perhaps even worse than the very first walkman I had.
Sound quality is very bad with much interference and noise.
The process of recording is has also not been well thought through. In order to record, you have to press the record button even before you tape is being played. If you do this first, you will realize that even the loud "cluck" of the plastic play button gets recorded onto the track that you are going to record.
Complete waste of money as there is nothing great about it accept for its novelty.

I already converted a few tapes and pretty happy with the results but would be nice to be able to reduce noise. Also, after spending ah hour trying to convert my first tape on a Mac (supported), it failed while exporting to iTunes without any errors.
