The MDR-NC300D in-ear headphones from Sony provide high-quality audio and high levels of ambient noise reduction in a compact and lightweight design. The headphones feature 16mm drivers to provide rich, detailed audio with an ultra-wide frequency response. The headphones offer Normal, Movie, and Bass listening modes to perfectly suit your listening situation.
In order to find a snug and comfortable fit, 7 different sizes of eartips are provided. Finding a proper fit improves sound quality and bass response, and also naturally blocks out unwanted environmental noise. To further reduce ambient noise, the headphones have active circuitry with artificial intelligence that automatically selects the ideal noise canceling mode based on your environment. Thanks to this advanced technology, the headphones can reduce ambient noise by up to 98.4%.
The headphones also feature a volume control and a monitor switch in the main control unit. The monitor switch lets you hear your surroundings without removing the headphones for having quick conversations or listening to announcements. The circuitry operates for up to 15 hours on a single AA battery. The cable has a standard 3.5mm stereo mini plug for wide compatibility with MP3 players, CD players, and more. An extension cable and dual-prong airplane adapter are included for extra slack and connecting to in-flight entertainment systems. A convenient carrying case is also included.

So far, so good. I haven't yet had a chance to give it a real work out yet, but around the house with some loud fans (summer, you know) and other sources of ambient noise it seems to work well. I do like the monitor to hear ambient sound, but would like music to pause when the monitor engages, but that is nitpicking. The only thing that really bugs me about in-ear noise isolation is the "2001: A Space Odyssey" effect where you hear yourself breathing rather loudly in your head that they all have. I've had earlier Sony NC headphones as well as Bose Quiet Comfort 2, 3 and 15 models and so far I like the NC300D better than those. Another minor quibble in the design is that when clipping the clip to something it's way too easy to press the monitor button.

Spend the extra money for Bose
These headphones do a decent job of eliminating ambient noise but if you are looking for true noise elimination spend the extra money for the Bose. This is coming from someone who always buys Sony...Read complete review

Comments about Sony MDR-NC300D Noise Canceling In-Ear Stereo Headphones:
For air travel - good NC is a lifesaver re fatigue and headaches. I cannot wear over-the-ear cans for more than an hour as they make my ears too hot. On-ear feels too much like a vise after an hour. Thus I tried many in-ear units. The NC300D has most comfortable rubber tips I tried - good for 3hrs comfort before a remove-for-a-rest moment. I can sleep with them in. The NC effectiveness is astounding. 18-20db is WAY quieter than the 10-12 db many NC phones do. Also of note - best carrying case I have seen, plus Monitor funciton is treat. NOTE - learn how to shut them OFF or you will complain of battery life. Method is non-intuitive.

A real "ear saver" especially for those noisy times when self awareness and quiet reflection is such a priority.
For flying an essential: for retreating to a quiet world where you only let in what you want - a delight.

I work next to a male with a loud deep voice. He like to hear himself talk. I needed small unit that really works with canceling ambient noise. This unit works beautifully. The unit takes one AA battery which lasts about two days of 7 hr usage. I would suggest purchasing rechargeable batteries so this is not a problem.

Sound quality is good.
Noise canceling is good.
Battery only lasts a couple of hours. Won't last a decent length flight, or trip.

Comments about Sony MDR-NC300D Noise Canceling In-Ear Stereo Headphones:
These earbuds cut out almost all the lower frequencies (tire noise, engine noise, fans, other environmental noise, etc) but leave you with higher end frequencies (sirens, music, some conversation) intact (music on high end only). These are for people who are in noisy environments and either want to escape with music or without music. I give them a thumbs up.

I have been using it on air travel and it had work very well. It is well constructed of aluminum. However the cords get tangle very easily and has clumsy design. Not the most stylish but work for what it was intended for. Use AA batery to both listen to music and canceling headphones function.
