After looking at many different models and being discouraged by most of them, I was finally directed toward the Technica Pro 88W wireless lav and receiver. I was skeptical of the price, after seeing so many other wireless sets often in the $1,000s, but did the research and trusted a close friend's opinion.

I snagged it up and used the set in a shoot the weekend I received it in the mail. I couldn't be happier. It has clear reception, ease of use and it's portable and lightweight enough that there were absolutely no troubles using it on the set.

My only hesitation from giving this 5 stars is 2 things: the fact that it comes with a mini to mini cable instead of XLR and the cut off for high sounds. I had to buy an additional Mini to XLR cable for my camera, although the price for that cable was substantially less than expected. We were shooting with this unit and our actor did a light scream and it peaked and cut off, taking a few seconds to regain normalcy. I would think if we were only using this for talking and not screaming, it would be perfect.

I bought this about 4 months ago, I got to use it for a interview in my house. It worked fine, however when I went to edit the audio the sound had alot of noise in it. I had to run it through a filter process to remove it (took extra time). I just used it for a Stage production (mic mounted at front stage on stand) and everytime someone moved cloes to it a hissing and pop, then it would go away. Distance was approx 60 feet with about 200 persons in the place. Distance was line of sight to the mic. I tried changing the switch from A to B got worse. So I am hoping to have enough good sound and I will have to use my external mic I also had running to make my production work. So long story short if you are planning to use for intemant interviews this will work for the price. If you plan on doinbg wedding, schools, or anything else that you will have persons moving around or in front of your camera DONT GET THIS. Spend the extra money and get a SonyUWP-V1 system (I just did or else I would loose work). You must know what you are going to use this for before you buy it as long as you know your job then go for it.

Comments about Audio-Technica Pro 88W - Camera Mountable VHF Lavalier System:

Use this for doing interviews and other film/video work. Works well as long as the batteries are fresh and within 20-30ft - watch out for dead spots in the orientation of the receiving antenna. Same is true on any radio receiver but especially true with this model. Just saying, pay attention. The mic is NICE! Great clear audio for the money - assuming, of course, proper placement and whether or not it's covered by clothing. Not being able to control gain from the receiver is an issue but not a deal wrecker - still get decent levels. There's a little noise and the mic cord and shoe mount seem a bit fragile/cheap. Other than those minor complaints it's an excellent wireless mic system.

Comments about Audio-Technica Pro 88W - Camera Mountable VHF Lavalier System:

I'm an independent television producer who needs a second wireless mic for special guests on a cooking show I produce. Our host wears a Seinnheser and I love it... rarely do we have a problem... but I also don't have the budget for another Senheiser.

I used this mic and the first show, the first guest, who was only on set for 5 minutes we had a lot of feedback and pops and hisses. I tried both channels and it didn't help. Several more attempt have failed, so after I've written this I'll be looking into B&H's return policy.

I also don't like that it takes 9V batteries. Everything else we use takes AA and it would just make like a lot easier to be able to use the same rechargeable batteries on this.

Great for under $200, but comes with all the downsides of a budget microphone. Surprisingly small capsule and well-built. Good range to 20 feet. Would get the G3 Evolution in a heartbeat if I had $600.

primarily used for following humans around and being interrogative.

in my experiences this handy kit picks up crisp audio at reasonable distances. once you're 30 ft. away from your subject you can expect to drop signal.

if you are young, broke, and need some mics...you should already have these in your cart.

Comments about Audio-Technica Pro 88W - Camera Mountable VHF Lavalier System:

I come from twenty five years of engineering and producing albums in some of the best studios in the world. While I wouldn't put this product in the same league as Neumann or AKG mics, it is a great improvement over any consumer camera's built-in mic, especially for projects that require clarity of detail, such as narration. Camera mics might be okay to use for ambient sound and that's about it. Audio Technica is no stranger to recording studios and makes a very good and respectable product in general.

A couple of caveats: the mic clip is awkward to use and, as someone else mentioned, feels like it's going to break at any moment. It also pretty much requires lapels to get the mic positioned properly while other lavaliers have a more sophisticated mic mounting apparatus that is easier to position. Fortunately this mic has an omni-directional pickup pattern, otherwise it would be unusable clipped to clothing other than a lapel.

Also interference from somewhat close proximity to a computer (and I'm sure many other electrical or magnetic sources) could be a problem. For critical applications, be sure to do a playback, if you're in doubt, to ensure you have a clean audio take.

I am using this to do video tutorials so I can easily rerecord myself if necessary but loosing a good take, especially with paid talent is painful. This product is fine for what it is with a good QPR but do not rely on it professionally.

Out of the box, the product worked flawlessly, other than as written above.

Comments about Audio-Technica Pro 88W - Camera Mountable VHF Lavalier System:

I have only had the opportunity to use this twice since it arrived recently. The big test (and the reason we purchased it) was to videotape a school graduation, where we were asked to set up the camera in the back of the auditorium. We attached a shotgun mic to a stand in front of the stage, and everything worked beautifully. Transmitter & receiver were about 70 feet apart.

Setup is easy and fast, and I had no problems. We have not had the opportunity to do any real-world testing with the included lavalier mic. It worked fine when we tested it around our home though.

If my small photography/video business gets bigger & stronger, I'm sure I will spring for a higher-end system, but for now this will work great for our occasional event recording.

I am not an audio professional though I am tech savvy. I needed a mic to do some simple videos for the internet in a sound proof room in my basement. The mic is about 10 feet away from the receiver. Out of the box I got a ton of feedback through the mic. It sounded horrible and ruined the videos I shot to where I had to reshoot all of them using just the camera's mic.I'm connecting it directly to the camera. I've used both A and B channels. I still get horrible sound. This is frustrating. [...] Durability issues: The mic jack is falling apart already and it's barely been used. The coating on the wire is stripping off of the mic cord.I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone.

I use this product for commercial and studio recording. Most of the work is done inside not outside. It fits on my video recorder perfectly and have not given me any problems since I purchased it. Its light weight and gives me just the range I need shooting on location and in the studio. I just purchased another one today. Again great product that i would recommend to anyone.

I use two of these as field lav mics with a NTG-3 shotgun. not a great range on them, usually gets static about 20 yrds away, particularly if there are RF sources around, these don't handle that too well. But in general I get good sound from them, clear voices on interior and exterior interviews or dialogue, as long as i can keep the subjects from banging them around. well worth the price. i use them for both documentary work and narrative work as well as commercial productions.
