Designed for pros and semi-pros alike, the Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Kit is a high-performance camera that features the resolving power of an 18-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 4 image processors that enable 8 frames-per-second capture of high-definition, low-noise imaging at sensitivity levels up to ISO 12800.
In addition to high-definition still images, the Canon EOS 7D can also capture true HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second. Video clips can be up to 12 minutes in length or 4GB in size, and you can make full use of all Canon EF and EF-S-mount lenses, which enables an exceptional range of creative visual possibilities. And to ensure clean, blemish-free image files, the 7D employs a dual dust-reduction system.
The EOS 7D's Intelligent Viewfinder enables 100% viewing of the total image area, and features a transparent LCD overlay option that enables advanced data display within the optical viewfinder including user-selected AF modes, a spot metering circle, and on-demand grid lines. In addition to the 7D's optical viewfinder a Live View mode enables you to compose, review, and edit images using the camera's 3", 920,000-dot TFT LCD. The 7D also features a Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that enables you to adjust the roll and pitch of the camera in 1° increments, using the viewfinder or LCD.
For continuous shooting sequences, the 7D can capture bursts of up to 126 JPEGs (large) when using UDMA CF memory cards, or 15 when shooting RAW files. An enhanced all cross-type 19-point autofocus system enables extremely accurate AI Servo AF subject tracking and user-selectable AF modes for precise focusing. For metering stills and video, the 7D features a new 63-zone iFCL metering system that takes focus and color data into consideration when establishing exposure times.
The Canon EOS 7D is constructed out of rugged magnesium-alloy and is sealed against dust and weather. The 7D's shutter is equally rugged and tested for up to 150,000 exposure cycles. Images can be recorded to Type I and II, UDMA-compliant CompactFlash cards in either sRGB or Adobe RGB, and you can expect up to 800 exposures per charge using the camera's rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
The included Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens is a lightweight, compact all-purpose "standard" zoom lens that has been designed specifically for digital photography. Ideal for travel, mid-range nature/wildlife and general photography, the lens is equivalent to a 29-216mm lens in 35mm format. It features Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology, which provides up to a 4-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds.
In addition to a number of different recording size and frame rate modes, the EOS 7D enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features and even allows for in-camera editing. The large CMOS sensor and compatibility with over 60 lenses provide a wealth of depth-of-field options. And it's all as easy as the press of a button - the EOS 7D has a dedicated Live View/Movie Recording lever with a start/stop button that gets the shooting started fast.
Full HD Video is captured at 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30p (29.97), 24p (23.976) or 25p frames per second, for up to 4GB per clip. Movies are saved as .MOV files and can be viewed in Full HD with HDMI output. Other recording sizes include HD at 1280 x 720 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps) or SD/VGA at 640 x 480 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps).
Display options include: grid, spot metering, AF points display, hide all, zone AF, spot (single-point) AF, AF point expansion and Dual Axis Electronic Level display. The EOS 7D also features a brilliant new Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots, displaying both roll and pitch in 1° increments, either in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
In addition, Canon's Light Source detection AF automatically compensates the focus by taking into account artificial lighting sources and making appropriate adjustments and the EOS 7D's new Intelligent Macro focusing tracks the object or the cameras movement when shooting close-up, to ensure focus is never lost. AF modes can be customized to suit the situation, ensuring reliable focus, every time.
Since the metering sensor has a color measurement function, exposure errors and focus errors caused by different light sources are minimized; the EOS 7D gives stable exposure from shot to shot in situations where light changes, such as in a theater or concert hall. This makes the EOS 7D ideal for scenes with extreme difference in brightness such as brightly lit scenes or backlit scenes; the camera balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and exposures are not overly influenced by bright areas in the shot.

I am a professional videographer who has been using the Panasonic DVX/ HVX for several years. I waited a long time to purchase a new camera that is keeping up with the times and I finally went with the Canon 7D because of price and performance. I have been very happy with the cameras capabilities, dynamic quality and overall performance. I first used the camera on a vacation and thought it was funny how often I saw other tourists with this camera around their necks. Then when I returned to the world, I have used it for photo shoots as well as short films and even a friends wedding. I also keep seeing other small groups of filmmakers around town filming with this camera, including lame TMZ paparazzi types in Los Angeles. From tourists, to filmmakers, to evil paps, this camera is EVERYWHERE; for good reason too.
While it took me getting used to handling a DSLR camera for shooting video, I have gotten a pretty good feel for it with lots of practice and have been challenged with learning alot more about photography and cinematography because of it. I enjoy the wide 18mm lens and the 135mm offers a nice depth of field. My next purchase will ultimately be a 2.8 mid-range lens. I already had a nice Canon 2.8/ 70-200mm lens which performs great with the 7D. The 60fps is a thing of beauty and along with the steep price difference, this also made me choose the 7D over the 5D. Hands down, the 7D wins for the value ratio of cost/ performance. I also say that for shooting video, having the wider 18-135mm lens is worth the little extra money for a great everyday use lens. The 28-135 lens was okay, but that extra touch of wide made it feel more familiar to my work with using pro-video cameras like the DVX/ HVX. While I have external mics to use, I am also very impressed with the on-board mic. But beware that it will pick up camera operation noises, such as focus/ zooming/ adjusting the dials.
The only real negative issue I am experiencing is not with the camera, but is with editing on my modest computer that I have been using without issues for my previous video footage for nearly 4 years. My 2007 Macbook and Final Cut Pro 6 isn't up to speed with what this camera's hi-def video can do. While I saved alot of money on a great camera that I will continue to use for photography and indie filmmaking, I will need to get a new Mac Pro computer and Final Cut Pro 7. This is where it gets expensive, but in order to have a proper work flow with all the bells and whistles to handle the massive hi quality video, you'll need this to get the best result for the cameras capabilities on a Mac. The hardware & software upgrade is needed for the changing times and codecs and video cards, etc. to handle the hi-def information. That's just part of evolution I suppose. I'm happy about the cost of the 7D, but being a slave to Mac prices and constant upgrades can bite me.
Overall, I'm blown away by this camera. But do remember, it is a photography camera first and a video camera second. Hard swish panning and hard rack zooms do cause a bit of video disturbance if you're rough with handling it. I did use it on my old Glidecam and a Jib arm crane with great results. Beware of the accessories you'll want to get the moment you start playing with it from shoulder mounts and a very necessary eye loop for the LCD screen. I also found a 2nd battery to be absolutely needed and at least a Lexar 16GB CF card for shooting alot of video. Instead of buying more expensive CF cards, i bought a portable LaCie Rugged 500Gb hard drive to dump footage on with a USB Lexar card reader which takes about 18 mins to transfer 16Gb of video footage. The 16Gb amounts to about 50mins of hi-def video footage. Hope that was useful! Cheers and happy shooting.

Purchased this camera a week ago for a nonprofit interview series---had five shoots in five days, lasting around 3 to 4 hours each. After about two hours of continuous use, the camera began to flash a red thermometer and even automatically closed the aperture all the way down for no apparent reason. At the end of one longer shoot day, the camera also produced 4 corrupt files that I could not open on my computer, presumably related to the overheating problem.
These problems, in conjunction with the fact that you can only record 4gb/12 minute video files at a time, make this a less than optimal video machine. I have the camera outfitted with a hoodloope, a zoom h4n for audio recording, and some various clamps and holders for stabilization. The image quality is fantastic, and the fact that I can so easily switch between SLR still shooting and HD video shooting is exceptionally convenient. I used this to shoot portraits of my interviewees as well as interviews, and both sets of images look great in decent lighting conditions. The overheating generally took sustained use over several hours, and can be managed by powering down for a few minutes.
Even so, anyone considering this camera for serious video use should be aware of the difficulties and quirks yet to be fully worked out. It shoots in h.264, which is not a good codec for FCP or Adobe Premiere, demanding ANOTHER post production step of transcoding.
I think the camera is worth it---I find the shallow depth of field produced by the Canon lenses extremely attractive. But know that making this work for video production takes a lot of extra effort.

I bought the Canon 7D more than a year ago and can say that I've been in love with it so far. Many essential functions, nice design, amazing image quality and noise reduction, high frame rate of up to 8fps and in addition, full HD 25/30 fps and 1280x720/50i/60i capability is a great advantage. The image quality, both still and video can be compared to the 5D mk II with ratio 9.5/10 - a great choice for the cost range below 1.7K/ body. Thanks Canon for this excellent product!

...With a camera. I bought this camera very quickly due to my Canon 20d breaking right before I was shooting a wedding. I read the reviews and everyone was happy with it. I mainly take photos of children, families, weddings, and just starting to dabble in sports photography. This camera is fantastic!! I love how it is still similar to my 20d but totally different at the same time. There are so many new features that make the camera so much easier to use. I think my favorite feature is the fact that the ISO goes to 6400. I love the 18-135mm lens too. I have been looking for a multi purpose lens and this is definitely the one to get. I have an 18-35mm and a 75-300mm lens and while I love both of them I think the 18-135mm is my favorite. My only negative about the camera is that it is heavier than my 20d. It's not a huge deal though because the pros out weigh that one con that I have. I let my cousin test out my camera because he was looking for one and he ended up buying the 7d too! Again, I never thought I could be in love with a camera but I am with the 7d. :)

I use my camera to capture emotion, movement and ambience, I then transfer the elements to oil on canvas. In order to achieve this I need a camera that delivers crystal clarity. After spending weeks on the internet, downloading previews, checking specs, all the things you do before signing on the dotted line, my choice was clear, the Canon D7. I'm in heaven and cant wait to afford a telescopic lens and explore and explore some more. The best thing about the D7 is that although not a small camera its ergonomic design allows perfect balance in the hand. Things that aren't so great... well there aint none. This camera is perfect if you're in the semi-pro tribe. The best thing thats happened to me all year. Love my D7

I owned a T2i ( great started camera ) but the 7D is a giant step further, super fast auto focus, more frames per second and two digi iV... you can go wrong... I went to Cuba, to the beaches, high humidity on the forest and this camera never let me down.... I dont need a 5D for now, with the 7D you can do a lot but a lot of thins too...B&H sales persons rocks.

This camera is amazing. I am especially impressed with it's low-light ISO capabilities, 8.0 fps continuous shooting, and various settings available in video mode. The dual image processors are powerful and and quick, the 19-point Auto focus system is great, and I love the feel of the bulky magnesium alloy body in my hands (compared to my Nikon D40x.) As a serious photographer but not a professional, this is the perfect camera body for me. All of the controls and buttons are conveniently placed, the LCD screen is large and sharp, and the multiple dials make navigating through menus and adjusting settings while shooting very easy. I feel like I have so much more to discover about this camera, and the creative potential for me is beyond exciting.

I am a semi pro photographer. I bought the 7d for business and personal use. My passion is my kids - work is a lot of product. I guess that makes a serious hobbyist?
I do have a lot to learn. I'm used to the 50d and it's set up and it's presets. 7d requires a bit of study on technical side of photography, which I really enjoy. I love playing with this camera!
I really love the camera grip and the high sPeed shooting feature. The photos are marvelous. I used it at the park with my kids playing and in low light indoors. It's really nice. I enjoy the video feature as well - I was nervous about the manual focus required for video; It has not been bad so far.
the 18-135mm len offers a nice range. I wanted something versatile for my first lens. I consider this a very nice lens.
The bummer is that my camera stopped working after only one week - less than 300 photos taken. However, one quick phone call to b and h saved the day! They certainly upheld their reputation with customer service. Making an exchange hassle free has me hooked. I dont have the new camera in my hands yet. I'm sure the defect is just a fluke.

I use this camera for school, and it works wonderfully. I study film production, design, and advertising at the University of Southern California and it serves me in each area very well. The photos are beautiful, and the video quality for the price is great. 7Ds do have a rolling shutter issue and can be seen in some moving images, but it is an excellent camera to learn on if you are not heavily involved in director of photography work. I use it with a Scan Disk 32GB card and it works very quickly.
I'm very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend it to friends.
