Comments about LaCie d2 Network 2 (2TB):
I originally purchased this drive to work as an external music server.
Unfortunately, the d2 Network 2 requires that LaCie's software be installed (on both the drive--as firmware--and on my Mac) to operate. This makes it impossible to do a full reformat of the drive.
For my purposes, having 'extra' software on what I need solely as a storage device is just one more thing to go wrong. Also, the drive necessitates both a USB partition as well as ethernet partition whether you want them or not.
Luckily, I was able to replace the drive through LaCie for a standard d2 Quadra which was able to meet my requirements (unfortunately, without an ethernet port).
The d2 Network 2 drive is likely to be an excellent solution for those who want to set up an external type of server (LaCie's software offers FTP support and more).
As an external music server, however, I would go with the D2 Quadra. Like its network cousin, there is no fan so it is quiet. It runs at 7200 rpm. And while in an ideal world I would want a solid state drive for speed and greater quiet, it is still a good buy.
My only other comment is that there is no option for selecting which type of manufacturer hard drive is included. (Hitachi has far better reliability specs that any other manufacturer).
By the way, the console software is included.
