Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged eSATA:
I love my new hdd its so fast over esata, about 95 to 100MB, 3 times faster than usb.
Its design is a little old but is shock proof. Includes all needed cables, that's great.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged eSATA:
I buy ALLOT of Lacie's Rugged hard drives for work and find them to be very reliable and Lacie offers great customer support. This one is my first esata rugged and it seems to fall short of what I was hoping in terms of speed. Goes great with smaller files but seems to hit a major bottle neck after 20gigs and slows down on file transfer speeds not holding it's 3gbs transfer rate.

This hard drive is exactly what we were looking for. Being in the military stationed overseas requires us to have some very durable gear. Whether we are in the deserts of Iraq or an office building in Japan, this hard drive gets our job done!

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged eSATA:
I tried building an eSATA drive using two brands of enclosures. My HP would not recognize them as SATA drives. The LaCie drive was recognized immediately. Write speed from my Lexar Expresscard reader was ~46MB to the internal 5400rpm drive. It was ~56MB to the LaCie 7200rpm. On negatives are the dang ugly color and the unit is not availabe in 750MB yet.

Comments about LaCie 500GB Rugged eSATA:
I bought this to go with my new Sager laptop with Windows 7 64 bit(core i7)which has an eSATA port, but everytime I connected through the eSATA port the drive and the system slowed to a halt-- even the mouse would sometimes freeze. When under USB2 connection only, the drive worked fine.
I took the laptop and the drive to the laptop manufacturer (conveniently not too far away) and demonstrated the issue. They plugged in a different brand of eSATA drive which worked fine, so they surmised that some 3rd party (LaCie, in this case) drives experience conflict with the intel storage controllers. Or something along those lines; there was a slight language barrier.
I stopped on the way home and bought a different brand drive and external cage, and all works like it's supposed to now.
On a an up note, the LaCie performed as expected on my desktop Dell with XP and the LaCie PCI card adapter. But since I was going to be using this drive as a back and forth Lightroom library, I had to be able to use eSATA on both computers.

Had it about a week or so. So far, so good. It's fast and connects fairly quickly to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5).
