I've worked with G-Tech products for years, but this is one of my favorite! It's my portable, BUS powered fw800 RAID. I've used it as a travel drive for offloading data from HDSLRs. RAID 1 protection is key so data is safe and mirrored. I also use as a portable edit array. Able to get 4 streams of ProRes422 HQ 1080p @ 23.98. G-RAID Mini is fast, reliable and VERY VERY portable! It even works (BUS Powered) off my internal MacBook Pro battery. No joke, I was rendering my ProRes sequence while in traffic on the way to my brother's wedding rehearsal. I have already convinced some Directors & a Producer to order this from B&H!

Simple and straightforward; it sets up on the Mac without fuss. Its external appearance is first-class. However, ours had a drive failure within a few weeks of its installation. The only indication of this was a flashing red light behind the front grille. There is no manual, not even on the CD, and the manual for the nearest other model says nothing about error conditions. Tech support identified this as a failed drive, a fact which did not make itself at all apparent in any other way. There was no data loss, and G-Tech/Hitachi promptly issued an R.M.A. As for the cost of returning it and the lost time, well, that didn't even get us an apology from G-Tech.

I mostly use by G-raid mini as a backup space for my time machine. But I have also used it to store/do some basic work on Final Cut and it is fast and performs well. It is small and stylish and I love it! It would be nice if it had a power button though. Maybe.

This is a great external device, plenty of I/O options (eSATA, USB3.0, FireWire 400/800), high quality enteprise class drives, it's very cool and relatively quite. What I find less appealing is the fact that it doesn't have a power switch and it comes formatted for MAC. I wish I had the option of buying these things formatted for NTFS.

This drive allows me to store all the HD video clips that I download from my digital camera. I use it for editing too and it works great. It's portability allows me to edit wherever I want. I can unplug it from my desktop or work with it on my laptop, and I have all my media in one place to finish my projects. I can always depend on G-Raid.

Just bought this tiny 1TB drive to back up four old 250 GB drives that are each 4 times the size of this! I was able to transfer the data relatively quickly, considering that the older drives only have firewire 400 connections. It's very convenient that this drive comes with a cable that connects to firewire 400 and 800. This little drive is going to save me a ton of space. I think it's great!

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID mini Portable Hard Drive Array:
Seems to work as well as my G-Safe 2TB drive which is flawlessly. That drive has 2-2TB drives in it and comes configured for Raid 1. This drive advertised as 1TB G-Raid mini comes with 2- 500 GB drives. Either drive can be configured as Raid 0 or 1. So why not a consistent way of designating drives. Only realized I would have only 500 GB when I configured for Raid 1. So now on an extended trip I reconfigured to Raid 0 and brought another drive along for redundancy. Did not get what I thought I was getting. [...]The case that comes with it is handsome but affords little more in the way of protection.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID mini Portable Hard Drive Array:
I ordered this in April, 2011.[...] .My intention was to use it in the field with a laptop running Vista 64 and Edius Neo 2.5. The device comes configured for Macs, and I hadn't had to re-configure something for a Windows machine in a long time. There were no specific instructions included and I had to do some research and draw on my own memory how to proceed.I connected it using the E-SATA connection, and the item appeared to install properly. My laptop initially recognized it as my G drive, however I never got a chance to decide if it should be used as RAID 0 or RAID 1. (To this day, I'm not sure which RAID is being used, which is a concern because I initially wanted redundancy). After using it about 3 times, something went wrong, and the drive somehow lost it's G designation and became my I drive. (I'm not sure what happened to H).Based on a short review I wrote at another site (which described my disappointment and problems), I was contacted by a member of the G-RAID support team asking if I ever got it working the way I wanted it to. I replied that it was working, though I was not sure at optimum performance, along with some questions, but never received a response of any kind, neither to my questions, nor advice or inquiry regarding the problems I've been encountering. To this day (June), the device still causes problems on my laptop, such as mysteriously re-booting or generating a BSD, then issuing a message that Windows recovered from a shutdown, and should a search be done for a remedy? I've always replied affirmatively to that, yet it seems no remedy is ever found as the problem repeats the next time I use the drive. Upon my reply, it appears a search is initiated, but the small Window that contains the initial message eventually disappears, with the problem recurring later on.My laptop contains an internal SD card reader, which also seems to have been affected. With a card inserted, I intend to transfer video footage from the card to the Mini. However, when doing so, Windows Explorer often starts, but the hourglass often remains active with no details of the card's contents being shown. I inevitably (after minutes of inactivity and a "Not Responding" message), must force a shut-down, remove both the SD card and the Mini, re-boot, then re-insert the SD card, then re-attach the Mini. That's a BIG waste of time, particularly in the field when I'm often trying to do it at breaks in events, when I'm rushing back to the camera and unable to go through those steps.Overall, I'm most disappointed in 2 things about the Mini: the installation documentation presumes more technical knowledge on the part of the purchaser, and the speed of transfer (using the E-SATA connector) from an 8 GB Class 10 SDHC card to the Mini is slower than expected.I know RAIDs are more complicated, and are not merely external disks for additional storage. The fear of 'not knowing what I don't know' has prevented me from un-installing the device and starting over; I'm not sure if there's a proper procedure for that, and again, I haven't found steps for that in the documentation I received. My advice, specifically to Windows users, is to be wary of the installation. I concentrate on shooting and editing, not on the technical issues of installation. I had hoped the installation to Windows would have been better documented, but it seems I presume too much from a manufacturer of what seems to be a widely popular product. This raises doubts about future peripheral purchases that are not for Windows-specific hardware.

I previously bought a 1TB G-RAID that is twice the size of the portable. It is durable and works great at home, but became a nuisance to carry around a lot. The 1 TB G-RAID mini is a great improvement on size and portability and works great on film sets to download media. I have had no problems with it.

This is a very well-made product. It is easily configurable for RAID 0 or 1 depending on the user's needs. The fan is quiet and the drive's footprint is quite small. Transfer speeds are more than adequate, even with USB 2 (I tried all of the interfaces just for fun!).
I consider it a good investment.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID mini Portable Hard Drive Array:
I can always trust G-Raid to provide the best, safest and fastest hard drive use for video editing. Someone once accidentally dropped 3 of these drives onto concrete from about 4 ft. high and there was no damage except a small scratch in the exterior. However, I would not recommend rough-housing with ANY hard drive or computer.

Art Directors, Photographer and Film Makers....
This is so worth the wait if it's on back-order...
I work in an ad agency that does print and film and we hoard them bc they've huge memory but small so doesn't take up a lot of room in the office... 15 hard drives and it gets hairy...
Also, looks nice in offices and you can write on it in fat Sharpies so they don't grow legs and walk off your desk...
Worth the investment and not that very very expensive.

I have not owned this long enough to write anything detailed. But I will say this, I've already dropped it 3 times, and a couple of doozies. No problems. I have HD video already on board, edited directly in iMovie, little hiccups here and there, not like being the local drive but I'm not really expecting that in a portable, still need to test Final Cut and Premiere. Aesthetics were not atop of mind for a portable but ya know this thing really looks as if it was built to go with my MacBookPro. Quiet, durable, seems to perform quite well, fits perfectly in my video backpack. Still some more benchmarks to try in editing but I'll give it 5 stars, giving it the benefit of the doubt because it's exactly what I was searching for after returning like 3 other drives to Apple Store.
