When I searched the internet for reliable, external Blu-ray burners I was shocked to find very few existed. I kept coming back to this model since it's brother had been shelved by LaCie. This new and improved version came with Toast Titanium 10 which is the software needed to burn HD content. I was a bit skeptical because technology is behind marketing but I ordered it anyway. My first experience was an editors dream. The unit is quiet, in fact, I was wondering if it was even working. I had a two minute program shot in 720p HD complete with special effects, graphics, music etc. The software and the d2 worked flawlessly together. No bad blocks, no stuttering, just a beautiful video that makes me proud to have gone HD. I now archive all my projects including raw footage to blu-ray. I highly recommend the d2 12X Writer by LaCie. It is without a doubt my favorite new product of the year!

My computer says its a "Pioneer BDR 205" bluray burner. Did a web search and in fact there is a Pioneer internal blu ray burner around, but it has been discontinued. Both do not share the exact same specifications (altough they look exactly the same)...but...really? Now it seems like this lacie unit its just a cheap internal bluray burner arranged to work as an overpriced external one. Would love to hear im wrong on this one
Still..great unit so far.

So far so great! This BD-R burner is a timesaver for those who backup RAW photo files. Since I like to archive projects and create general backups right after a wedding or photo session, this is a huge timesaver. I typically shoot 30-40 GB of data for a wedding or event due to the high resolution of my equipment and the number of shooters involved. To burn this onto optical media was taking hours of my time. (I do triple redundant backups of RAW data, optical being one media). Now I just drop the disk in to burn 25 GB in 45 minutes or so. Then drop in a 2nd disk. Works great in the background while I am working on my MacPro.
I recommend this item for anyone that does large optical backups in addition to their regular archives/backups. It burns a lot of data really quick.

This is for other posts that talk about is it a Pioneer or LaCie drive. Well, its both. LaCie is a company that makes external drives of all sorts. They manufacture the enclosures and many times the logic boards then they purchase the internal drives to put into their enclosures. Pioneer, along with LG, are the premier Blu-Ray burner drive manufacturers in the market today. If you open any computer that has a internal blu-ray burner, it will either say LG or Pioneer. This is not a con but a pro. I have this drive for my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro and use it all of the time. I almost went with a internal blu-ray burner for my editing station (Mac Pro tower) but opted for the external unit so I could also use on my laptop. Both computers recognize it as a Pioneer drive, because that is what it is internally. it works flawlessly. So, who cares if the computer sees it as a LaCie or as a Pioneer? I know I don't.

I needed to master my files from a hard drive and burn the occasional HD disc for clients.
It's a bit pricey, but I needed another file backup option since hard drives seem to have a lifespan.

Main use is Blu ray video. Nice that it included Toast 10 Titanium including blu ray plugin. All possible cables included. Too bad it wasn't designed to use Firewire 800 right from the start. Note that the burner supports 12x blu ray, but I can't find 12x BD-R disks! At least it'll be ready when they arrive.

I use the LaCie Blu-ray drive in a video post-production situation. Creating Blu-Ray DVDs for my clients and backing up assets for safe keeping.
On my first project I wanted to allow a little extra time because there are always compatibility issues associated, but happily it was not needed. I attached the drive to my Mac and it's name was immediately populated in my authoring software. I burned a test disk and it worked great, just like every disk I've done since.
Sure it's a little more money, and disappointingly there are no other options for Mac users. Definitely worth the peace of mind.

Comments about LaCie d2 12x Blu-ray Disc Writer:
I use the d2 in several ways as a video professional. I deliver authored Blu-ray discs to my clients via share in FCP. I deliver hd programming to broadcasters as data files via Toast Platinum. And I am starting to use it to archive non tape video files. I'm not sure about the longevity of Blu-ray discs but time will tell. So far I amy only using them as a backup for media that also exists on hard drives.
Set-up was quick and easy. The included Toast software is intuitive and easy to use. It seems to be well constructed. It's a bit on the pricy side and so are blank discs. In my case, I couldn't wait for prices to drop and a disc is way cheaper than mastering to HDCAM or DVCpro. Hopefully, soon, Apple will provide us with software that allows Blu-ray discs to be played on a Mac. If you need it now, it's definitely worth the money and a great tool for video professionals.

Very easy to use, it works as expected. For anyone making a blu-ray disk, this external will do just well. Also, I am using it to store away media of completed projects, at least for the smaller ones.

If you have a Mac there aren't many options out there for external Blu Ray burners. The price is a little high, but I caught it on sale at B&H for [$] so that made it a little easier. So far it has worked great and I haven't had a a single disc burn incorrectly.

We now burn blu-ray discs in order to give to clients for weddings, etc. This burner was a little pricey, but we bought it because it's Mac OS X compatible and it comes with the latest version of Toast for Mac. Toast offers several blu-ray menus that Final Cut Pro or Compressor do not, so it's a great addition. 4 stars only because of price.
Easy to setup. Both Toast and Final Cut recognized it immediately. We use the firewire 400 to 800 cable. Must buy if you want to get into burning HD content to disc!
