The Impact Sync Cord Male PC to Sub Mini is an 18" (45 cm) cable. It features a sub-mini plug at one end, and a male PC (post connection) plug at the other end. This allows radio remote control receivers (e.g. MicroSync Receiver) to be connected to the Canon 580EX II or Nikon SB-26, SB-28, SB-80, SB-800, and SB-900 flashes for remote triggering. It can also be used with lightmeters, which usually use a PC male cord. In addition, it can be used to trigger small flash units like Morris or SP brands from the camera.

This is the cord you want to sync your Gigapan to the pc port on your DSLR. Note this is not the usb port but the pc (old flash port) This allows the gigapan to determine whether the camera was able to achieve focus and execute the shutter. Not sure how it does this but it seems to work for me as they indicate in the manual. This provides some additional latitude when taking panoramas when you're too close to make a fix lens opening work.
Gigapan suggested a much shorter cord but you need something long to allow your camera to move around. Hopefully they took my comments to heart and put this item on their recommended list.
