I use this card reader to import footage off my P2 cards taken with my HPX170. Much like how I can't rave enough about the camera, I can't rave enough about this card reader.
I work off of a Macbook Pro Unibody from October of 2008 and for the longest time, I like everyone else, was stuck with the Duel Adapter which created and endless stream of Kernel Panics and headaches. This card reader just works. Every time. Even though it's plastic, it feels like a tank and from Panasonic, I would expect nothing less.
The only reason that I am giving this four and not five stars is because of the USB 2.0 interface. Don't get me wrong, this reader is FAST! By having independent signal and power interfaces you get the full power out of USB 2.0, but with USB 3.0 here, and that being backward compatible, I don't see why it wasn't used here. I suppose it's the same excuse for Macs not having Blu-Ray. Oh well, I'll deal with a smile :)
Just wish I had it two years ago! GET THIS READER!

Panasonic's stand alone P2 Memory Card Drive is not blazingly fast as advertised. 1GB of data still takes a minute to transfer - roughly. Off-loading your too expensive P2 cards in the field - to your MacBook Pro - makes you look cheap in your client's eye. You can't shoot. You can just stand there and watch for a very long time while you empty your cards to the Mac.This AJ-PCD2 Panasonic P2 Memory Card Drive is not the solution in a P2 based work flow. The only real solution is for Panasonic to dump the prices of their P2 cards to the level of raw milk. There's no reason for Panasonic's [$] for 64GB of solid state memory when same 64GB amount runs [$] at your local computer store. The AJ-PCD2 Panasonic P2 Memory Card Drive is not any faster than using an older Mac Book Pro with the PCMCIA slot for off-loading. Those older Mac's you can buy probably as cheap as this small plastic device. And check your e-mails too.Bottom Line: As long as Panasonic view their P2 cards as 'film stock' - and not as solid state memory sticks - I will recommend new pro users to go with Sony. Their Blu-ray disc based cameras are way cheaper to use in the field. Best of all you can hand your client the material you just shot on a Blu-ray disc.Do I love my Panasonic HPX-500? Yes. Takes great video. But the acquisition issue with the Panasonic pricing on its cards pushes me to not recommend any P2 based camera for pro use.Dan Erland AndersenDanish reporter & cameraBurbank, CA

Comments about Panasonic AJ-PCD2GPJ Single-Slot P2 Memory Card Drive:
We use this reader for capturing HD footage from P2 cards, usually two or three at a time. Before, we would use the camera to serve as the host and that process was terribly slow - almost 1:1. Now a full card captures in just a few minutes so we are really pleased. We just wish the reader was priced more realistically to what it is. Also, the required use of two USB slots may cause you to disconnect other peripherals.

It works flawlessly. Mac, PC, doesn't matter. Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, whatever. Fast. Buy it.
Only complaint: it's ridiculously over-priced for what it is. Unfortunately they know professionals are the ones buying this so they know they can charge a lot and we'll have to pay it. I wonder what the profit margin is on this thing for Panasonic, lol.

As a one woman "band" I need to be able to plug in and edit quickly and efficiently. The Panasonic Single Slot P2 memory card drive makes my life easy. The only thing I can say about it that I would change is the fact that it needs two USB ports. However, I was able to get a power adapter that has a USB port so I don't have to waist one on my laptop. The size is perfect for on the go shooting and editing like I need.

The device does what it's supposed to. And applying the standard professional broadcast price factor of 4, yes it's worth the money. In fact is would be worth the money at a quarter of the price. Note it requires 2 USB connectors, one for power, one for data so make sure you have them available. And the supplied cables are only about 6'. Good for a laptop but for most edit rooms you will need to extend those cables.[...]The device works fine...what's not to work? Connected to 2010 Mac Pro 12 Core OS X 10.6.7, FCP 7.

Have used it for two weeks; everything is straight forward and fast. The device is lightweight, no frills just pure function, and much more practical than dragging an old powerbook with you on the shoot. For some reason when it's connected to computer the current 'leaks' onto the computer shell and I've already had a couple of (weak) shocks when touched the sides of the computer while transferring files from P2.

I am a professional video editor that needs to turn around P2 media quickly while I am on the road - this little puppy has been a Godsend. For the price you won't find anything better. Easy set up, simple to use (platform: FCP 7), light and travels well.

A fast and efficient way to offload P2 footage and keep the camera rolling. The cost may seem high for a simple one card reader, but, you'll get the investment back with the time saved during production.

This is a must have when you are shooting on location and need to transfer you P2 card fast and easy. It is light weight and simple to use. The drive does require you to use 2 UBS ports (one is for data and the other is for power). I normally carry 2 portable Hard Drives for file transfers when shooting with a P2 camera and the AJ-PCD2GPJ Card drive and I have had zero problems. I been using one since they came out and just bought another for my other computer when I take it on location. Worth every dollar you pay for it.

Comments about Panasonic AJ-PCD2GPJ Single-Slot P2 Memory Card Drive:
After needing additional cards, or a transfer device, I went with this option to save my budget. You need to decide - is it cheaper to repair a damaged port on my camera, or buy this...
Pros: If you only have 2-3 P2 cards you can transfer in the field to a laptop(that has 3 usb ports). It is cheaper than additional cards. It is better to wear this out than the camera.
Cons: SLOWER than the camera for transfer (takes 5-10 minutes longer pending your card transfer size), requires 2 usb ports(this isn't a problem for updated users most new computers come with several port options). Honestly, the price seems $100 more than what this is worth. If it had firewire I would have been fine with the price and not felt so ripped off. Panasonic not only dropped the ball, but they lost the game on this.

This easy to use device makes it very simple to transfer HD video files to the hard drive for editing. In this complex world of digital gismos, some have so many features and switches that by the time I learn half of it, the device is outdated and replaced by something new with even more features and switches.
The Single Slot P2 Memory Card Drive by Panasonic is so straightforward, it seems to good to be true.
It is small and fits right in the camera case. When showing crew members that have never used it before, they look up and say, "thats it?".
It works for on the MAC that my camera assistant uses on the set. Then at home, I plugged it into my PC and it worked almost instantly. I use it all the time now. The most worthwhile camera accessory I have bought in a long long time.

When my two FireStore drives started to corrupt 1 file out of every 20, it was time to move to P2. The Panasonic P2 card reader is an inexpensive option and I was able to both Log & Transfer directly into FCP as well as dump the file folders for conversion later.
The reader requires 2 non-hub USB ports for power and file transfer, that's it. It takes about the same amount of time to transfer the files as it would if you used your camera instead.

Comments about Panasonic AJ-PCD2GPJ Single-Slot P2 Memory Card Drive:
In today's world, a USB2.0 interface is a little dated and slow. It takes about a minute per GB to transfer, so it's really not much faster than capturing from tape! A 64GB P2 card recorded at AVCIntra-100 takes over an hour to import at these speeds. However, when you need to continuously use your camera in the field, you have no choice but to hot-swap a P2 card and begin trasferring using this device.

This reader is very useful, and does the job very well. No problem with that. But Panasonic should review its price list for P2 cards and reader.
