- I use the reader on location with my MacBook Pro to import footage from the Canon 7D and 5D
- I highly recommend this reader over both FireWire 800 card readers (although the speed is about the same) and ANY USB CF card reader. The cost is less (less than half of the 800 reader), the speed is amazing (approx 6-7 minutes download time for a full 16GB card), and it keeps your USB and FireWire ports free for your hard drives and other peripherals
- It's not compatible (as far as I know) with desktop computers, so you have to use it with your laptop, but for me that's not really a detractor from using the product. If you don't have a proper size port for your laptop, then you could order the FireWire 800 version for 2-3x the price and then have the option to go into an 800-equipped desktop computer. But I love this thing!

According to Lexar, they are aware of the problem
and are not fixing it anytime soon.
Lexar actually recommended to return the unit.
Disappointing to say the least!

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:
Once the drivers are installed and you only load it with the card already installed into the reader you'll get super fast and stable downloads. Probably the fastest way to get images onto a laptop.
The only downside is that the reader is pretty fragile. It will bend at the plastic and metal join and eventually stop working. The key is to have a spare for when it dies which it will.

Can be alittle selective on when it wants to be recogniazed by my pc. Could be a local problem or with the device itself. But it does take me a few time of removeing/pluging in the correct order(reader then card) to get it to work properly. But once it does it works great and fast

I use the ExpressCard to download stills and video. What so great about it is that it's quick and there are no cords to bother with. I haven't found anything that has not been great. Works well. Just don't forget to install the drivers before use.

This is a blazing fast card reader. I bought it to replace my Lexar Firewire 800 reader that failed on me recently.
While this reader is faster and less bulky than the Firewire 800 reader that I had, the kernel panics and subsequent problems are a huge turnoff for me.
Several times now on assignment I've had my laptop stay awake in my bag and get very hot. Later I would find out that the computer had a kernel panic and needed to be restarted. I'm not sure why this keeps happening because I downloaded the required drivers from Lexar.
I'm thinking about returning it and getting the Lexar USB 2.0 CF/SD reader just for reliability's sake.

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:
I was hoping to get a Compact Flashcard reader that would be faster than my "6-in-1" USB device.
This isn't it!
The inconvenience of sticking out the ExpressCard slot isn't worth it if it's not going to be faster than simpler options (which it isn't).

when used with PROFESSIONAL COMPACT FLASH 600X 8GB or other fast Compact Flash card, I instantly saw faster uploads to my laptop than with a USB 2.0 reader.

I travel frequently all over the world from Arctic to Antarctic and need to be able to download my photos quickly onto my PC. I have used other products similar to this and with time had connection issues, however this works without fault.
I had some issues installing the latest driver but Lexars support was first class and had the issue resolved in 24 hours

I use CF cards for shooting video and stills on my Canon 5D. Especially with video, these cards can fill up fast. I used to transfer footage with an old, clunky USB card reader that would take up to 12min for 8gb...the expresscard CF reader does the same job in 2 min. HUGE UPGRADE, VERY SATISFIED

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:
I currently own a MBP 17" and needed something better than [...]cheap readers. I have the USB 2.0 LexarProfessional UDMA Dual-Slot USB Reader and wanted to compair the speed between the two products. Since the card readers interface is the express card 34 slot on my macbook pro, it transfers slightly faster than the USB2/0 dual slot reader. It helps that I can download 2 cards at once now since I have both readers. Only Con is that when I want to pull out the CF card, sometimes it pulls out the reader as well. So I mostly use 2 hands and hold the reader into the computer, while removing the CF card. Other than that, works very well with Macbook Pro

I am a film student and I also take a lot of pictures. I was sick of connecting my camera to gather images so I decided to bite the bullet and finally try this card reader. Boy am I glad I did. This card reader is fast and it allows me to continue to shoot while I upload.
It does stick out of my laptop a little (macbook pro) but it is definitely worth the convenience.

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:
In retrospect I'd prefer a firewire 800 reader. The speed is good but the driver has given me trouble. Since installing this I too have had kernel panics, something I have not had before installing this software.
I stalled the driver before putting in the unit, but one card in particular for a rental house kept locking my machine. My sandisk extreme 16 gb 60mb/s udma are fine. But I still get random crashes. It has been clean so far since I un-installed the driver.

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:
I bought this to use with a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6. It works perfectly and I could not be happier. I noticed that a lot of people have complained that it crashed their Mac. I guess they cannot read because the unit comes with a wrap around plastic tape with a big red STOP sign and verbiage in several languages that says to download the drivers from Lexar before use. I did this and of course I had no problems.
I performed a speed test with two other CF card readers, a SanDisk FireWire CF card reader and an i.Connect 12-in-1 USB 2 reader. The test read 147 NEF images comprising about 2.6GB from a SanDisk 8GB Extreme III card into a temporary folder. The SanDisk reader copied the files in 1:55.5. The Lexar in 1:58.4 and the i.Connect in 12:34.2.
I like the fact that there are no wires to keep track of since the unit just plugs in to the ExpressCard 34 slot on my MacBook Pro. I also like that it frees up my USB and Firewire ports for an outboard disk for doing secondary backups when I import images into Lightroom. I would give this device six stars if B&H would allow it because it provides a serious speedup in my workflow using this reader in combination with a LaCie Firewire outboard disk which I cannot use with my SanDisk Firewire reader.

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:
I just returned from a 2 day trip where I took nearly 1200 photos. After getting back to my hotel late, it was great to be able to import the photos into Lightroom in just a few minutes and go to bed early in preparation for an early start the next day. With my previous USB CF reader, it would take several hours. Now I just wish my desktop computer had an ExpressCard slot so I could use this reader there too.
The only negative is that it sticks out of the ExpressCard slot too far to be able to just leave it plugged in to my laptop all the time.

Comments about Lexar Professional ExpressCard CompactFlash Reader:
I am a pro sports photog and I love the compact nature of this reader plus it seems at least if not more fast as my 800 FW readers (SanDisk).••Looking forward to Thunderbolt enabled readers though••One very important thing! Do not forget to install the drivers. I didn't read any instructions at all so when I tried to use it on my MacBook Pro I created a kernal panic and was forced to reboot twice until I remembered reading right here in these reviews that I needed the drivers! Duh!Here is the link to Lexar's download page for the drivers. [@]RickAustin, TX
