The ViewSonic VEB620 eBook (White) is a compact, 2GB eReader that also happens to be budget-friendly. In addition its 2GB internal memory the VEB620 also has an SD card slot for enjoying additional materials. And doubling as an MP3 music player, the VEB620 plays your personal tunes as you read. Compatible text formats that you can read from include ePub, PDF, plain text, and others.
Adjustable font sizes and the E-ink text are easy on your eyes, making for a pleasant reading experience. And the low-power E-ink pages only consume energy when they're turned. When you consider that this eBook doesn't use paper, the VEB620 has the environmentally friendly "green" factor added to its list of features as well.
Navigating the VEB620 is easy thanks to the G sensor. This sensor allows the screen to rotate to the orientation it's held in. It also allows you to gently shake the eReader for skipping forward or in reverse a page. You can also use the left/right buttons or the left/right hand configuration option for page turns. When it's time to search the reader allows you to search passages and keywords in the book you're reading.

Seemed a good buy to me for intro to e-readers. Simple and easy to use. Comes pretty much empty - no books loaded. EPUB and non-proprietary was importment to me - seems like books are on the uprising re: cost. Has a music player which I still need to check it out. SD slot for expansion. Font size can be adjusted/enlarged - good thing since the initial page you'd need a magnifying glass to be able to read. Overall a good buy fo the meney <100 bucks.

Battery life suspect, got a replacement reader, no problem with the exchange. Service by viewsonic was very good. The only sore point is the Font allocation. Had to go to the highest setting to get a comfortable size. I would recommend losing the two smaller fonts and replace them at the higher settings; i.e. the current highest would become the MED setting.
Another aspect; why is firmware an option when you can't use the reader while it's plugged-in to the computer, which is the only way to add updated firmware!!!

- Two weak battery life (2-3 days eg vs 2-3 weeks in cybook opus)
- all books in one place (no directory tree)
- too long to sort and extremely slow when many books inside (>50)
- too heavy (>300 gr)

Comments about Viewsonic VEB620 eBook (White):
The main problem is that it is pretty slow. You should wait for a while till it opens the file. Transitions between the pages are also not instant. Otherwise it is good and cheap device. It might look bit primitive if you compare it to more fancy brand-new nooks, but it does its job pretty well. And of course it is very cheap if you compare to other e-readers.

Not bad, except for the reaction of the device by pressing a buttons. This is the slowest e-reader that I used.

It's disappointing.
I've upgraded the device to latest firmware. In my 3 weeks usage I have to charge it 3 times to finish a 800 pages book.
The response time is just OK when browsing the menus. While reading the book the page turning speed varies, some acceptable, some really slow.

I've been using it for 2 weeks and I'm happy with this product. I like its screen because you can read from all angles like a real book and not like other ebook readers. The problem I've found so far is that sometimes when I click the next page button, it doesn't change it, so I have to change it again.

I had been watching the eReader market for about 2 years now, waiting for an affordable unit. The VEB620 on sale at B&H comes close to meeting all of my expectations. The discounted unit comes in at what I would consider a reasonable entry price point. The unit itself is what I was looking for; a lightweight e-Ink device without any wireless network, simply something I could load books onto and read. Now the weaknesses of this unit, I think, could be easily overcome with a good firmware update. First the unit does tend to react slowly to user input as well as provide inconsistent feedback (sometimes a menu item is visually queued sometimes it is not). This is compounded by the lack of queuing of user input, thus if you try to move the cursor/selector too fast the second button press is simply ignored, however; this is hard to tell due to delayed reaction. Second the book index scheme is a simple linear list with no hierarchy or sorting system. What would be nice is to have the ability to organize books, using tags and/or authors, perhaps even use Calibre's data format. Lastly the page forward/backward buttons could be augmented by using the 5 way button. I realize the 5 way was to provide multimedia control, but minimally making it configurable to flip pages, for those who do not intend to listen to music while they read, would prove useful. The PDF rendering could use a lot of improvement as well, but that is less of a problem as you can convert the format to ePub.All in all, the device is not all too shabby for the discounted price tag though. I realize that, for those connoisseurs of e-readers, this device may prove a disappointment compared to other latest devices, however; I see no other e-ink devices in this price range (at [$]). With that said, one should have their expectations set appropriately. This device is a sound reader for literature or fiction that will be read in a linear fashion (i.e.: basic novel reading, page-by-page). I would not recommend this device to someone expecting to read reference books, educational material or even news documents where random access of material is expected. Also you will want to download something called Calibre ([@]) and convert your PDF's into ePub as well as manage the books you load onto the device.

I was looking to buy an e-reader. Did some investigating and checked out the reviews. Not all are worth anything. Looked at the Kindle, the Nook, I-PAD not, and some others. Found the above to be too proprietary, or no EPUB access. Bumped into the Viewsonic's e-reader and was mildly surprised. It being marketed on a lower scale - decided to go with it; ordered one and it arrived. Eager to use it, out of the box, but no books, unlike some others readers. No biggie, followed the instructions and up and running in no time. Way cool. Its easy to use. No hang ups as of yet (one week new). Room for music still gotta try this. Color vs black and white, well, looks ain't everything, but it reads like a book. Clear and crisp pages. Easy software easy downloads, lots of books from website.
