How can you go wrong really with something this simple? Then again, the R3 is an improvement, in my opinion, over the R2, which was also pretty simple.
What I didn't like about the R2 was that the washer was too thick (I replaced it with my own) so that it got overly squished when you tightened the fastener all the way down, and I found the D-ring too big, as well as the main attachment body.
The R3 fixes all that. The washer is thinner, the main body isn't as thick as the R2, and the attachment point/loop is solid and machined from the same single piece of metal.
If there's one thing that I think the R2 does "better" than the R3, it's allowing you to prop your camera against a flat surface without having to unscrew the fastener. Since the R2's D-ring could be moved to the side and the bottom of the main body was flat, when I needed to prop the camera against something for a steadier shot, I would just unfasten the hook from the loop/ring, instead of having to unscrew the whole fastener.
Still, I got the R3 because I like that it's smaller, and more solid.

Comments about Black Rapid FastenR-3 Third Generation for R-Strap:
I love the Black Rapid system and use it all the time now. Sometimes I use it in conjunction with my Cotton Carrier, especially for hiking. The system is great and I recommend this accessory as it is really a good idea to have a spare fastener. I have found that one weakness of the system on my camera is that the fastener can work loose during use. Now I'm using it on a tripod bracket attached to the camera and not in the camera body. But its something to watch out for.

This Third Generation BlackRapid FastenR-3 has solved my problem of how to carry my D3s, with 24-70 or 80-200 attached. With shoulder strap across the body and one end attached to the base of the camera, the camera/lens now hang snugly beside the body.

Comments about Black Rapid FastenR-3 Third Generation for R-Strap:
I purchased the BLFR3 hoping it would give me some relief from lugging around my D7000 with my 70 - 200 2.8 VRII Attached . It did just that. I was able to walk around Six Flags all day shooting pics. and another day at a water park Was able to shoot all day without putting un needed pressure on the Cameras lens adapter ring. The BLFR3 was very sturdy. I will Get plenty of use with this. It keeps the camera close and ready to shoot so I never missed any shots trying to put the camera together or getting it out of the case. When having such a heavy lens on your camera it does put a lot of pressure on the lens ring and could possibly harm the ring. This keeps all the pressure off of the ring by holding the camera and lens by the lenses tripod arm. I am very pleased with this devise and would recommend it to anyone using large lenses on their camera. It's a must .

lost my other FastenR (don't ask) so bought a new one. Nice and tight once screwed in. Love that I can now use my alternate strap with my Kirk bracket which gives me back the hole used by the bracket or any other tripod plate.

Great add on for an additional fastenr for your R-Strap. Made very nicely and only gig is for the addition cost. It coule be a bit cheaper cosnidering you probably already forked out 50-70 bucks on a strap.

I bought this so I don't have to constantly move one from my camera to the lens. If you have multiple long lenses with tripod collars you need one for each.

Very sturdy and convenient. I love my RS-Sport strap. The only annoying thing is that you can't put the camera flat because the fastener protudes. I use this in combination with the FastenR-T1. Highly recommended.

The R3 is so much better than my first generation connector, which was big and bulky. This little guy makes it much easier to shoot vertically when it's attached. Small enough that you barely notice it's there.
