I'm using this scanner to archive my football images from the last days of film. I have always used Nikon scanners as they were specific to 35mm and I never had good luck with flatbeds in general unless it was medium format or 4x5. This little guy really does a nice job BUT... You have to make it scan twice and use the iSRD feature. If you do those two things, it rivals the best scans I've seen on the Coolscan units of five years ago, anyway.
REAL LIFE SCANNING TIME is right at 5 minutes per image at 3600 dpi setting, which isn't bad when you figure how little post manipulation you need to do in Photohop after the fact...
The main reson I bought this model was the LED light source (my old coolscan bulb alone cost more that this guy), and the fact that it comes with Silverfast scanning software, which I've used in the past.

Where do I begin? I'll make one thing easy enough for a caveman: hardware good – software bad. That's the only easy thing so far. I can't say anything negative about the scanner itself because I've hardly gotten to use it. Getting to the scanner requires the use of software that is frustrating at best. To put it bluntly, the SilverFast SEPlus software by LaserSoft Imaging was written by geeks for geeks. These guys are so immersed in their World of Geekcraft that they've forgotten how to speak to normal people. They toss around obscure, esoteric jargon as if all their customers were engineers suckled on the teat of technology. I've been a photographer for 36 years and I have 14 years experience with digital equipment and software so I consider myself to be an advanced user, but much of this was beyond me.This software firm is out of Keil, Germany (best known for making U-boats) and to add to the complexity of their geek speak is the woeful inadequacy of the translation from German, both in the program interface as well as documentation. If there's one thing that burns every good American it's when these big foreign firms cheap out on using a decent translator. It's as if they wrote everything in German and then used Google Translator to convert it... click on sie Deutsch? [*].My angst began right away with the "Quick Guide"—which is the size of a roadmap of Asia because they want to include every human dialect on it. Some of the teeny-tiny illustrations attempt to show you how a color change works—only they have it printed it in black & white! Well actually a muddy mix of gray tones. Brilliant huh? Maybe it was originally in color but then someone decided to save a few Euros at the expense of clarity. There's even typos in the program itself—version 6 no less. Misspelled words like "sensivity" may not seem like such a crime but it shows a level of sloppiness and lack of quality control on the part of LaserSoft. I've got a 23" LED monitor and the control features are very hard to read. The little airplane icon in the ScanPilot feature reminds me of a Messerschmitt. The built-in links to Quicktime mini-movies are nice and shed some light into the darkness that is SilverFast. I could go on and on but I think you get the point. I'm not doubting that this software can't do what I need it to, it's just that it has a very, very steep learning curve. Steep like the dive of a Stuka dive bomber in full attack with sirens blaring.

Comments about Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE Scanner:
I am using this scanner for two things. First - to digitize all the negatives I have from 20 plus years of photography. Second - scanning all my "Great" images in hopes of marketing them. This scanner has settings and features that allows me to do both. I can choose the resolution based on the largest I would print along with many other features. The iSRD function is great. Negatives that are scratched or spotted come out looking like you just took them. Took a little while to get the software uploaded to my MAC and then had to get an upgrade (no charge) to actually get the software to work. I would recommend this to anyone who needs to scan their negatives and slides. buy an extra set of slide trays, that will help the workflow.

I AM USING THIS SCANNER TO SCAN MY 35MM NEGATIVES AND SLIDES. THIS SCANNER IS GREAT, THE RESOLUTION OUTPUT IS MORE THAN ADEQUATE BUT THE 35MM NEGATIVE HOLDER COULD BE BETTER, THE NEGATIVES HAVE A TENDANCY TO MOVE AROUND. THE PLACEMENT IN THE SCANNER HAS SOME MOVEMENT TOO.

Comments about Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE Scanner:
I bought this scanner to convert tons of old family negatives (color and black-and-white) and slides to digital images.
Positives:
The scanner gives good infra red dust and scratch correction when scanned on higher resolution (3600-7200 dpi) and allows adjust exposure and other parameters (which is nice and helpful) after prescan.
Negatives:
You have to be very patient,
I somehow thought that it would be easier and faster. On high resolution it takes about 10-15 minutes for one slide. And every change in scanning parameters requires new scan. The software is also not intuitive and I had to play around and watch video instructions to get it work.
Summary:
I am satisfied with my purchase because it does what I expected: it turns out good images at a good price.

Having a thousands of slides and negatives I needed something to transfer at least some of them to digital form for my Windows operating computer. This scanner is doing more than satisfactory job. Easy, simple installation, good software and fast prescan. To get really excellent result with scratch and dust removing features of software final scan became sluggish, but it's worthy. Shorter negative strips could slide of left-right alignment in negative tray, because there are no pins.

Comments about Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE Scanner:
I have had this scanner for a couple of weeks and have scanned in 8 rolls of negatives which are 25 years old. I have previous experience with other scanners and the results of the Plustek scanner are nothing short of amazing. Yes, each negative takes almost 4 minutes to perform a scan at 3200 dpi with hardware-based dust/scratch removal but the time investment is worth the results. The dynamic range is also excellent.
As far as the Silverfast software, Lasersoft is offering a free upgrade to the latest 8.0 version for purchasers of this scanner. I used the earlier version successfully and really didn't have any complaints either. Some people have complained about the complexity of the software but to be honest, it's no more complex than decent photo editing software. You can probably use default settings and get decent results but anyone going through the trouble of scanning negatives with this scanner, should invest the time to learn the software. If you want one-button results, you could probably go with a cheaper (and worse) scanner.

I have 2 decades of slides that my parents shot back in the 70's and 80's that have been sitting in Kodak carousels for years. This scanner was the best price/performance buy for my needs. It's scans relatively fast and produces great image quality. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Comments about Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE Scanner:
I bought this scanner to start archiving my family pictures after a lot of research. Basically my choice boiled down to one of the discontinued Nikon Coolscan Scanners, One of the higher end Epson flatbed scanners, or this unit. The Nikon was ruled out after I found out that Nikon no longer makes drivers and it wouldn't work under Windows 7. The Espons were a bit more expensive and didn't give better performance so I went with the Plustek.
Overall the scanner has done pretty well for me. It does a very good job of color negatives and black and white film (can't use the dust removal on black and white though). Kodachrome is a bit of a challenge as it has a hard time getting the shadow detail (like just about every other scanner), and using the dust removal usually doesn't work super well (probably 50% of the slides end up with artifacts).
The biggest complaint I have is that you have to disable all other usb imaging devices for the scanner to work. Plustek and Silverfast (the included software) blame windows for this bug, but i don't think that is the whole story. Silverfast installation was also non trivial as you had to get just the right order of driver fromo plustek, silverfast 6 install to register for the free upgrade to 8, than driver updates, then uninstall silverfast, than reinstall silverfast 8 (I think i remembered the order correctly). Anyway it was a pain! I guess it is worse becuase I am running an actually up-to-date operating system (Windows 7 64bit). Your mileage may vary.

Comments about Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE Scanner:
I've been through 4 used dedicated scanners (Minolta Elite I, Multi II, Elite 5400, and Dual IV) and 3 flatbed scanners (Epson V500, Canon 8800F, and Microtek M1) for film photography in the last 3 years. The Elite I is awesome for the price but SCSI only, the Multi II is a waste of money, the 5400 broke after 6 months (and cost $450 on [@]), and the dual IV was a big plastic piece of garbage. The 8800F was just ok for medium format, and a waste of time with 35mm, same with the V500. The M1 is great for MF, but not enough resolution for 35mm. Buying used 35mm scanners is a big waste of money since they will break and you're stuck with it. The 7600i make a really big file, but honestly scans as well as my 5400 did (I've compared the same frames) but costs less NEW, and I got an extended warrantly. It's fully manual loading, which is a bonus to me, since the transports all broke on the Minolta's (except Elite I which is manual and awesome). I don't use SilverFast because it's bloatware and very slow, and also never loaded correctly off the CD (typical for SF products). Use VueScan, it's fast, accurate, and stable (and can calibrate with IT8 targets). If you need to scan 35mm with high quality, this unit is it. A Nikon CoolScan 5000ED is better, but it will break, and you'll be out of the $2500 it cost you used.

I've been using the OpticFilm 7600i SE Scanner by Plustek to scan slides going back to the 1960s. I've been using the SilverFast 8 software that comes with it on my Mac OS X Lion. The software version that is bundled with the scanner was not the latest version, but the company upgraded me to version 8 for free. It all works beautifully. This scanner has infrared capacity that allows the software to do dust and scratch removal. Normally the automatic setting is sufficient, but if you have a really badly damaged slide you can increase the sensitivity manually and watch the scratches disappear. Takes about 3-5 minutes per slide with the dust and scratch removal activated.

Comments about Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE Scanner:
I am using the OpticFilm 7600i SE to scan color negatives film. In the future I'll try my black and white negatives and color slides.
So far, I am currently using it to scan Fuji Super HQ 200 color negatives.
The bundled software that came with the scanner (SilverFast 6.6) was not intuitive at all.
I Went to SilverFast web page to get a manual and found out that I was entitled to an upgrade to SilverFast 8 for free. I downloaded the version 8 and my scanner stopped working (getting error message: "There was a problem starting your scanner, Please make sure your drivers are installed correctly"). I went to Plustek web site and downloaded the a new driver but could not install it. I wrote a note to Plustek support (no phone support to call). They wrote me back within a day with detailed instruction on how to perform the driver installation. Apparently I had to remove the old drivers and disable all other imaging devices connected to my PC. The install was a success and I was finally able to start scanning.
I got good results at 3600 dpi, there is slight improvement at 7200 dpi (at a price - much slower). The iSRD function (dust and scratch removal) works great.
To improve the scanner, Plustek must make the film holder with positive lock on the film strip, as well as a good fit when inserted to the scanner because there is some play (left and right), especially when you are scanning the first or last frame you may get slight angle on the resulting picture. Other than that, the main issues with the scanner are speed and luck of batch scanning (you must move manually the film holder one frame at a time after each scan). The SilverFast software had only a quick guide, To get a full manual explaining in details all the functionality, you must buy a third party book. Also, even the quick guide is not well thought off - they show two buttons on the workflow one red (inactive) and it turns to blue when active. I printed this document on monochrome laser printer and could not tell the difference, why not simplify and put either X or checkmark inside that button to show if it is active or inactive.

This scanner works as well as the best review says it will. It was simple to set up on my Mac; there was a free upgrade to the latest SilverFast software. The scan of color slides and Kodachromes are well, but not over, saturated and the contrast is quite good. The results makes this unit quite a bargain.

I'm scanning about 3000 Kodachromes, and this scanner is giving me great results. It produces sharp scans that show great detail in the shadows without banding or noise, thanks to the Multi-exposure feature. There has been a lot of discussion about using the iSRD function to remove dust on Kodachromes: I find that iSRD works great for a lot of my slides without causing any artifacts or other problems. You just have to try it on each slide. If the dust removal function doesn't work, then I just gently dry-wipe the slide with a Q-tip and then blow it with a bulb blower, which gets rid of most dust. I gave this product four stars because the SilverFast software is a bit of a pain to set up and figure out, but if you give it 2 or 3 hours to learn you'll be off and running

Comments about Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE Scanner:
Does a good job at a reasonable price. To extract max utility in a reasonable amount of time, here is my process. Scan with Vuescan ($40) to TIF at 3600dpi and 24 bit RGB (in and out) with infrared dust removal set to medium. Great results with total scan time of 1 min and 10 sec on well exposed slides. (Underexposed slides will take longer, and previewing each slide will add 10-15 sec each.) I then use Lightroom 3 to convert each to DNG and process for color, exposure, etc. (By the way, I also quickly go over each slide with a camel hair brush and a blower.)
