The Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle is a 10-bit HD/SD video capture/playback device that supports USB 3.0, and allows you to capture 10-bit HDMI or analog video directly from a camera onto your computer for professional editing or mere playback. With a neat, compact design, the Intensity Shuttle is very portable and easy to set up. As the input and output connections are on different sides, you can simply plug the unit in line with your existing cable setup.

Supporting HDTV 1080i/59.94, 1080i/50, 720p/59.94, 720p/50, the Intensity Shuttle allows easy and instant switching between HD and SD video standards. Additionally, using the USB 3.0 interface eliminates the need to compress visual data and thus saves on CPU processing power; this allows your CPU to solely focus on HD real-time effects. The video capture/playback device draws power from the USB 3.0 connector itself, and eliminates the need for a dedicated power source.

Fully compatible with multiple software image-editing solutions such as Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, Fusion, and Nuke, the Intensity Shuttle also supports all Windows USB 3.0 computers.

Note! Not compatible with Dell computers.

Requires Windows 7 and an x58-based motherboard with onboard USB 3.0, or a USB 3.0 PCI Express card and an x58 or P55 series motherboard. Does not support USB 2.0 capture and playback. See the support page for details.

For capturing HD video, primarily from game consoles. The Image capture is pretty solid. The quality of the image capture is VERY high. Using HDMI-HDMI takes a bit of space up on your desk as the plugs stick out 2 inches on either side...and the orientation of the plugs don't allow for the 90 degree adapters.

Unfortunately, there is no passive passthrough of the video/audio signals. This device is powered by the USB port. So if you want to hook this up inline with your console(s), you'll either need to have capture software running or you need to unhook and re-hook every time you want to use the system or use the console without your pc running.

The drivers for this device are finicky. To say the least. You need very specific USB 3 drivers. So the install was a bit of a pain, but I finally got it sorted out.

The included software is decent, although not great. It has failed at the end of a capture about 5 times (creating a corrupted and useless clip) since I started using the product. (I've made a total of 30-40 captures) Capturing inside PP 5.0 seems a bit more stable, but it eats up more system resource to keep PP running.

Overall I would recommend this product for anyone looking to get high quality HD captures from their devices. (not HDCP though) If Blackmagic would change the design to make better use of the desktop space (maybe upright?) and power the device for full-time signal passthrough, it would be 5/5 stars!

I´ve read all reviews here and I know lots of people are suffering with this gadget.

I believe that there should be incompatibilities with several hardware, but I want to testify that I bought it and it´s working with my notebook VOSTRO 3550 from DELL, that comes natively with 2 USB 3.0.

In the software area, all I did was download "Blackmagic_Desktop_Video_Windows_8.2" that is a zip file with 109Mb that includes Desktop Video 8.2.msi.

It is probably good equipment but now I have to install a usb 3 pci card to use it on my mac pro. Why did they not just use fire wire when they designed this product and why don't they mention that it doesn't work on mac pro except if you have usb 3, anyway. I haven't used it it yet, maybe it is just the right tool after installing usb 3.

Good Product. Pretty simple to use it when you figure it out. The reason i bought it is so that I can stream live and to extract audio from hdmi. The only down side is to run the shuttle a person has to have a very powerful computer!

The device requires a SUPER EQUIPPED MACHINE. I was not able to install it in 4 machines. It is too strict in the hardware requirements but it is not explained in their marketing sales pitch. Unless you have the latest CPU (Intel I7 Only) and only some specifics models. Also requires some USB 3.0 connection. In summary the product is years ahead of what a PROSUMER desktop will be. And when you call for support if your device is not listed as compatible you are in your own.

                        Nice little piece of gear.
Terrible installation instructions. Took me two days to finally get all the correct drivers (not easily assessable online) and my computer to fully recognize the darn thing.
Once everything was in place it works like a million dollars.
Only buy if you are an experienced IT person who enjoys the innerworkings of computers. BlackMagic failed on making this an easy installation. More and more people are complaining, daily. So, I'm sure BlackMagic will get it down right - hopefully soon.
I like there products. It just happens the Intensity Shuttle was released a bit too soon before all the bugs were worked out.
Three Stars for a great little piece of heaven and overall price tag. Minus Two Stars for bad install files and instructions.

I use the Intensity Shuttle to stream live video into Sony Vegas Pro 10 on my big box computer during live educational events. This affords me long record times to the hard drive so I do not disrupt the sessions and instant playback on my computer at the site. I also monitor the recording on a 23" HDTV live so I know exactly how it will look later, as I am capturing it; great little device.

It immediately overloads the USB3 controller on my ASUS G53Jw when I tried to use it. I have verified that I have PCI-express 2.0 and a Fresco Logic controller that has the latest firmware. I know BlackMagic says that the Shuttle won't work with laptops, but if the specs are the same as what they require for desktops, in theory there should be no difference. I am disappointed with circumstance, since the Shuttle is the whole reason I bought this laptop.

This product totally depends on a fully functional USB 3 port - which in turn totally depends on an Express slot at revision 2.0. Even if you try an x16 slot at revision 1.0 - it will not work.

I wasn't able to get the Shuttle to work under any circumstances on either of my Asus P5B motherboards...

in theory this is the unit to have as a small EFP Capture option. this company has not done enough compatibility tests. researching the specs is not enough, you will find that it take more than a device with 3.0 USB to make this function.
My opinion this is not ready for market. I feel as though I am "stuck" with this. it is useless

BlackMagic pulled their support on P55 motherboards all together! You can't claim one thing, release a product, then change your mind! What kind of company is this? Good luck to all who spend almost $200 on a device with a company that won't be around for that long.

Why would you design an inexpensive piece of hardware that only works on a chipset that sits on I7 or Xeon processor motherboards? Those are some of the MOST expensive motherboards, and pieces of hardware, out there?!

I have P55 board with an expensive I/O USB3.0 capture card installed, which is capable of latencies of 4GB/s to 6GB/s installed in x16 PCIe lane on a Quad Core PC. That's STILL not good enough hardware?! Tell me there is not something wrong with this picture?!

This has a massive driver problem. It won't detect the device if the latency is too high.

At the very least, this device should capture 720p or 1080i with NO PROBLEM AT ALL. Still, it won't detect or work with my high-end PC at all. This is very sad and frustrating.
                                    Honestly, BlackMagic, EPIC FAIL

If purchasing this or the Intensity card, please check their FAQ for what motherboards or systems they have certified.

I mainly got the Shuttle to record Xbox game-play. I quickly figured out that the Xbox's 1080p out is different form the standard, so you can't capture in 1080p. But u can it in 1080i if you do a 720p to 1080i cross conversion in the software given to you. All together, this is one of, or the, best capture cards on the market if you have usb 3.0.

The product works well for my purposes. I will say that the drivers for USB 3.0 can be tricky to load if you do have an NEC USB 3.0 chipset. But once that is done, you should be able to use this device to capture both 8/10-bit uncompressed HD video for editing. It's really great!

The only other unfortunate thing is the fact that it must be used on USB 3.0, which means I can't use it on my Macbook Pro to capture. But easy enough to move files between the Win7/Mac laptops.
