Comments about Roland R-05 Portable 24-bit Digital Audio Recorder:

got this little guy to capture, in stereo, various locations indoors and outdoors, low levels, high spl's, and also for the odd mono voice recording, by way of the mini jack mic in... and in all conditions its performance far exceeded my expectations. drawbacks are minor handling noise, file management in device it a tad on the clicky side, and the limiter, when in line, tends to 'press even at lower levels, coloring the recording, not badly, but in comparison with the relatively transparent recording quality with the limiter out, its a somewhat heavy handed, but in a bind, when transients are often and violent, its a great safety net..with that said, the pro's far outweigh the con's, and i am very pleased for the quality for the price.

Comments about Roland R-05 Portable 24-bit Digital Audio Recorder:

I am a professional videographer. I capture weddings, concerts, and produce web videos. I have used Roland products before. The most important thing to me is that the sound tracks match up perfectly with video tracks. I tested this with a 3 hour test. I started my Panasonic HMC150 and the RO5 at the same time. I matched the sound tracks up. The R05 was a perfect match. Frame for frame it was exactly the same at the beginning of the clip to the end after three hours. I have used the RO5 several times in jobs and it is flawless. I also like the fact that I can connect a lapel mike to it and it has a 48 volt power supply for the mike. I can put the mike on the groom, lock all of the buttons, put it in the grooms pocket and not have to worry about any wireless problems. The unit is small, comes with an optional silicone cover, so it won't slip out of the groom's pocket. I can also put the RO9 anywhere in a wedding service to get up close sound. There is every conceivable option on this unit for WAV files. I have tried all of the other small flash recorders and this unit is light years ahead of the rest. There is no distortion, hiss or noise at all--clear as a bell.

          Love this device!
I use it for recording 2 to 5 piece amplified band rehearsals and solo drum kit work.
High quality, easy to use and great recordings.
The 09 model was what hooked me, but the 05 model has a tripod jack for mounting.
If you need an easy to use, high quality output recorder, look no further.

Comments about Roland R-05 Portable 24-bit Digital Audio Recorder:

The Roland R-05 is as nearly an ideal digital stereo audio recorder as could be designed even in theory. It is lightweight, easy to use, fits in the pocket, employs easy to find and cheap SD cards, has an absolutely ENORMOUS capacity, and interfaces easily with other devices like PCs. The quality of its recordings is very hard to believe, far too excellent to be obtained through those little microphones.

I bought it as a Christmas gift for my wife, a musician at a church, and she absolutely loves it. She can now make near-professional quality recordings of the choir and musicians.

You can spend a whole lot of money on one of these byt why? The Roland pretty much does everything it needs to do with an extraordinarily high level of quality and unusual versatility at an extremely reasonable price.

It has provisions for external microphones.

Comments about Roland R-05 Portable 24-bit Digital Audio Recorder:

I've had the Roland R-05 for about a month and it has performed very well so far. I'm using it for podcasting and interviews and the quality of the internal condensor mic is good. That said, I am mostly using it with a dynamic Shure SM-58 mic plugged in either directly or via a mixer and the quality that way is fantastic. So much better than the USB condensor mic I had tried plugging directly into my laptop. I'm still trying to work out some of the nuances of the recording volume control on the R-05 ,but I haven't really researched it yet so it's not really a con. Overall, I would recommend the Roland R-05.

Comments about Roland R-05 Portable 24-bit Digital Audio Recorder:

Does the job. Pretty simple to operate. Be careful and be aware of which folder you are recording to. I misplaced a file and panicked thinking it wasn't recorded when it was simply in another folder. Battery life great so far. Recording quality wonderful. Only thing is windscreen is not so good. It falls off easily and can be easily lost because of this. Please know this does not have speakers so you cannot listen to your recording unless you attach headphones or a separate speaker. Great for instrument practice because it has a simple loop function which allows you to repeat a certain segment over and over. Also wonderful for voice practice and syncing quality audio to video footage that would otherwise have ambient noise. I'm sure I will find other uses since this is a wonderful product! Pricing at BHPhotoVideo is best I found online with a retailer that I trust. [...] This was recommended to me by a professional musician friend and he was right on the money. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

I originally bought this to assist with my music practice. (It records live music wonderfully). But after using it, I know have found numerous other great uses. This thing records lectures and business conversations much better than any pocket recorder that I have used. It works great in small conference rooms and large banquet / reception halls. This thing is simply awesome. It fits in my pocket, runs on AA batteries, records WAV or MP3 on SDHC cards. And you can do some editing on the device (including splitting a long lecture into smaller mp3 files). The only limitation is that the unit DOES NOT have a speaker. Not a problem for me, but the buyer should be aware of that.

Comments about Roland R-05 Portable 24-bit Digital Audio Recorder:

As a military journalist, I was looking for something with more controls and a better sound quality than the Olympus DS61 I have been using. I found what I was looking for in the R-05. I am using it to capture sounds for Soundslide pieces.

Saying I am a novice audio capture technician is an understatement. Therefor, the rehearsal feature on the R-05 helped me capture clean sound bites right out of the box with minimal knowledge of the process.

It also has some advanced features, which I have been getting comfortable with. It has Low-cut or high-pass filter, which ever you choose to call it, on the back that is adjustable from the menu. Gain controls are pretty easy to operate as well.

It also has playback features like play speed and reverb, but I find the reverbs gimmicky. Maybe musicians will find them handy, at least for on-the-fly tests.

I have been using the on-board mics, and they work pretty well. I also use a Rode NTG-2 mic with the recorder and have captured some very good recordings of voice and natural sounds.

The build of this piece of gear seems pretty tough. This is a real bonus for me, a military journalist. I do, however, suggest the silicon case for it if you plan to do any real field work with it.

In conclusion, the R-05 is a nice piece of gear for amateurs or even professionals looking for light, portable sound capture for Web-based or radio broadcast.
