The Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM is an ultra-wide zoom that has a 35mm equivalent angle of view of a 12-24mm lens when used on DSLRs with APS-C size image sensors. Sigma's FLD glass elements, equal to fluorite glass, correct for distortions and color aberrations to deliver beautiful high contrast images.
The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.4" (24cm) allowing you to get in close to a subject to create exaggerated perspectives. This super wide angle zoom is perfect for shooting landscape photography, architecture, building interiors, photojournalism, wedding photography, group pictures and a wide variety of other shooting opportunities you may encounter.

I have shot several paid gigs with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X and the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5; the Sigma 8-16mm is equal if not superior in image quality to either of the others I've stated and opens the door to even more creativity at 8mm not possible with the Tokina or Canon.
I researched this lens a lot before the purchase and the photo magazines loved it. Sigma really raised the bar on this one. If you're a 7D shooter wanting the wide angle abilities of the full frame cameras then this is your wish come true.
Great build quality, sharp pictures and so many creative possibilities.
And yes if you have a 7D you can use it in low light at ISO 4000 at quick shutter speeds no problem.

great lens... if you get a good one
[...]When you have a sharp copy with a good AF motor, it's a beautiful thing... and of course 8mm is ridiculously wide.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
Did a lot of research before selecting this lens for my 450D. Took it out for a spin to do some architectural interior and exterior shots. This thing is sharp, focuses quickly and silently and the finished shots were everything I was looking for. Be careful for bright lights in front of the lens. It'll give you some really pronounced lens flare. Also, I keep the whole lens cap AND ring on the lens even between shots. I've never had a lens that had this big a bulge on it so you'll want to be careful. Probably best to shoot on a tripod. This is a very excellent super wide and the price is great too.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
I bought this lens after reading many tests and reviews on wide angle for crop sensor cameras. This lens tested the best and I see why. The lens is very sharp and colors are great even at difficult angles that I thought might cause problems. I shot waterfalls from the bottom looking up in bright sunlight and hanging from trees looking down the falls with low light and the pictures were great. I took only a few pics with my favorite L lens because I was having so much fun taking difficult shots. This lens or the Canon EF-S 10-22 are a must have for a canon crop sensor and 2mm does make a difference.

I use this lens for landscape and architectural photos - but I've been pleasantly surprised how well it accommodates other images as well - it's my starting lens when I'm sizing up a new photography project.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
I initially bought this lens for my 7D thinking of it as a specialty lens for scenery and artistic shots. Boy was I wrong. This has become my new favorite lens to shoot just about anything wide-angle with.
Focus is spot on, though speed falls well short of my Canon 2.8L lenses, as one would expect. Build quality is excellent. Focal & zoom rings are both stiff so you don't have to worry about unwanted shift. Glass is very good, especially for the price. And if I were to nitpick over any cons, I'd say the lens is heavier than I expected, though far from cumbersome, and the lens will not take a protective filter which always makes me a little nervous.

This is an incredible wide angle lens, it has almost no distortion. Although it's f/4.5 aperture @8mm, I had no problems while trying to get focus, even on low light (without flash's AF assist beam). It's perfect for architecture, indoors, landscapes etc.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
Just got this and used it on a family trip. Worked excellently, pictures were very sharp and crisp for a lens this wide. Oh, and boy is it wide - it leads to very unique compositions and allows you to take a shot where no other APS-C lens would allow. When zoomed all the way in, it is very close to the widest that the typical Canon wide angles get, so it almost doubles as a normal wide angle.
The only semi-minor fault (I knew it didn't accept filters going into it, so I didn't list this) is that the lens cap is awful - it doesn't snap or secure, more like just slides on the end and inexplicably comes in two pieces. My Rokinon 8mm fisheye has a similar petal hood design, and the cap for that is FAR superior, locking into place. But, that's a minor nitpick for the lens's otherwise excellent performance.

Just getting started using the lens but I can already see that it will get a lot of use. The first pictures I took came SOC with very little barrel distortion and no vignetting. The images were tack sharp also.
So far I found nothing to be unhappy with.

Used at a wedding for the first time with nice results. Super wide which comes in handy for large groups. It distorts the images on the edges which is typical of a lens this wide and will take some getting used too if you havent had a super wide angle lens before. My first impression was that it shot "dark" meaning using the same settings as my 24-135mm the images looked very dark comparatively but very wide angle of view. Comes with a hood and seems sturdy enough so far.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
I purchased this product to do some real estate and architectural work. This is the widest lens available for a 1.6x crop factor camera. While it is a slow lens, it's absolutely terrific for indoor work.
I submitted photos to a client of mine over the weekend and his immediate response was "wow, the house looks bigger and brighter in your images than it really is". I was using the lens on a Canon 60D using natural light.
The only two complaints you could have for the lens is the front element is bulbous so you can't stick a filter on it, and you do tend to get sun flares in your images but that should be expected for a lens with this wide of an angle.

If you want a nice wide angle lens for your DSLR with a camera that has a cropped sensor and not full frame this is the lens for you. I use it on my canon 60D and really like it. I would reccommend it.Just wish I could put a filter on the front of it.

This lens rocks! Very sharp, and awesome colors. I primarily shoot B&W, but I think I'll be shooting more frequently in color. Just a few tweaks in Photoshop and the colors are georgeous. It does everything you want a super wide angle lens to do.
Only con I've noticed so far is it's not good in low light. Since I don't shoot in those conditions, it's not an issue for me. The images also come out dark
when shooting at the indicated exposure, but by compensating the exposure to let a little more light in it's perfect. Though, this problem could be specific to my camera.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
Sigma just keeps improving their lineup. After being really pleased with 5 years of service from the older 10-20mm superwide, I decided to match the view I get from my Sigma 12-24 mm on a full frame with the 8-16mm on the APS-C format. While the 12-24 was an engineering marvel, the strong vignetting and a bit of decentering at 12mm makes it a bit cumbersome to use (focus has to be dead on for sharp corners). Not so with the 8-16mm. This is one sharp dude. Distortion is not quite up to the 12-24mm, but the rest is very nice. CA is low, vignetting is ok and any minor faults are handled well in post processing. Of course, getting that ultra-wide perspective on an APS-C sensor with corner to corner sharpness is the payoff.

Great corner sharpness. Ultra wide, but not fisheye at 114 degrees. Almost no distortion except what you want, slightly stretched, curved look on the edges. Not so good in low light without a tripod.

I've never owned a wide angle lens so this would be my first one. I tried out other lenses, but I think that for the price this this sigma lens is a very good deal. I really enjoy the material that is lens is made out of. It is a good weight and it feels sturdy. The ultra wide angle is really nice. Wonderful for landscapes.

I am shooting a Canon 60D with this lens... without a doubt, it has the greatest field of view of any lens WITHOUT being a fisheye lens. It is super sharp from edge to edge and has minimal linear distortion... amazing for a lens this wide.
I am shooting both stills and video with this lens... I use this setup on my destination sportfishing trips around the globe. Sometimes, space is limited on the boat and this lens allows me to capture the subjects (angler + fish) in the frame.
As you have heard it from others, the only downside is the lack of threads for filter mounting. Other than this, this lens a total savior for my work.
Sigma has a super winner with this lens... thank you Sigma!
