When comparing the myriad of iTouch/iPhone interfaces, I chose this one because it lines up with my philosophy: Get the biggest bang for the buck. And yes, at this price point it's just a couple of jacks wired together, but the iRig looked the coolest, and came from a company I've dealt with through the years: I've had great customer service responses whenever I've called or emailed IK Multimedia about their software products. So far, I have used this for recordings and jam sessions... with rave reviews on the simplicty and quality of my 'rig' which keeps getting smaller as one of my music buddies noticed (stack to combo, combo to modeling amp floorboard, floorboard to laptop, and now laptop to iTouch). I could see this being used by a voice-over artist working on a spot using the iRig with their favorite mic and using the Amplitube's compressor and EQ to finalize a performance which could then be emailed right from the iTouch.I'm just giving it 4 stars right now because I haven't seen how well it's really going to hold up (although it seems built plenty well enough), or what it will do in a really noisey (wireless RF) environment.I just don't think you can go wrong with this device thanks to its simplicty and quality. There's no active electronics to break down, or color your tone, like the more expensive units. Think of it this way: If you're going to spend $100+ on an iTouch guitar interface (or a certain blue plug-in microphone), why not just buy one of those new mini recorders with built-in stereo condenser mics, a 4-track recorder and all the I/O you'll ever need?

I bought the iRig ($$$$) to plug into a real guitar amp...

The first iRig disappointment was the headphone jack 'out'... the instructions state that you can NEVER use 'mono' at this connection.

Since ALL guitar amps are mono, this isn't a solution easily solved... expect to spend another ($$) for TWO additional adapters >>> 1/8" stereo to split RCA's >>> RCA to 1/4" mono adapter (there are other ways to do this, but you still need adapters = more money).

Now we get to head over to iTunes an pay another ($$) for the iRig software... done.

Lastly, excited to hear this thing in person, I plug it all into my Marshall 30 Solid State practice amp... ... ... ... blah.

Short of a couple pedals like 'Noise Reduction'... pretty much everything sounds worse than the built-in effects on my cheap bedroom amp... there's no guts!

I had hoped the 'Delay' pedal would provide some deep delays... and while it does ok... the degraded sound quality being pumped through the iphone > iRig > headphoneJack > stereo-to-mono adapter > amp connection... just ruins it.

Point being, some of the pedals function nicely... but the poor connection makes the sound quality worse than you're used to hearing with your amp's built-in gain... the second I plugged directly back into the amp, my ears felt relieved... the power was back on!

Personally I'm disappointed that it won't be making the cut for my practice needs... it was expensive for a headphone practice toy.

Fortunately, if you intend to practice ONLY through headphones, you may find decent use for this setup... I only wish IK Multimedia had promoted it that way... I never would have purchased it then.

CONCLUSION: The quality is not up to par for band practice or recording... somehow the iRig drains the life out of an otherwise powerful sounding guitar setup... but practicing through headphones is great.

I'm a guitarplayer that has no pedals to add fx to my guitar, so this is like a dream to me, with a low cost I can have whatever my mind can create. iRig just came to help me practice more. I can play with my iPad without bothering anybody with my distorted guitar and my punk rock riffs.

I use this product with both my acoustic guitar and electric bass to record in GarageBand on my iPad2. There is a slight hiss when I use my acoustic, but the noise disappears when mixed with other instruments. I can also limit the amount of hiss by turning up the Noise Gate in GarageBand.
Has been a great tool to help with getting my "own sound" into the music I am recording.

For the price, even better. This is a great piece of hardware that impresses anybody who has ever had to carry around their stuff to practice or even play. Totally worth the money.

I use this product in conjunction with Amplitube Ipad app. I have used this tool at home for practice and took it to practice with the band yesterday. It performed wonderfully with my current equipment. I use an Ampeg BRE2 amplifier with Ampeg 4x10 cabinet. The control and sound is virtually indistinguishable from my Boss pedalboard. Great sound and I will try it at a live performance soon. Great product for the price.

Just got this piece of hardware for use in recording my school's chapel programs. Worked great except that the software that I have on my iPod does not allow for the recording that I want (the Amplitube app only does guitar type recording). I am looking at an Ipad and using garageband with it which should allow for recording that I specifically need but so far works great!!

It appears a bit cheap for the price they ask but it works as it says!

But he was so happy and amazed of what this product can do especially when he use it to his ipad and iphone to create and synchronize some effects and amplify sounds as an alternative to heavy sound gear to achieve the same quality of effects produce by this gadget as bridge to amplifier. It comes very handy according to his need and just plug and play anytime-anywhere when he has gig...

The cable is pretty expensive for what it does, but it is really the only game in town that I trust. I have tried other adapters but they did not work. I guess if you want to play, you have to pay.

It works, but there is a lot of line noise. The free APP for iPod doesn't make me want to spend any money on the full version. I'm underwhelmed with it all. I thought I could easily use this with Garage Band too. It works, but the volume is low and it has to run through the iPod (you can't just plug it in to the back of the computer without running it through the iPod first.

In order to clearly hear the metronome you have to jiggle or hold the headphone jack. Everything else sounds good except for that.

Everything a guitar player needs is literally in the palm of your hand. The stomp boxes are awesome and playing along with your iTunes collection has never been this fun. Import your tunes and you can play along, learn, and transcribe your favorite riffs and solos. Slow the speed down of those hard to play solos without changing the pitch. Record your ideas on the fly. The options of stomp boxes and amps are superb considering it's on an iPhone!!

The iRig is a slick little device that allows you to connect your guitar (or bass) to an iPad and use virtual stomp boxes with AmpliTube.

It works fine. Improves greatly the recording quality of the iPod touch, and can be very handy for study and rehearsal.
