This wonderful little device will help any small to medium sized group with simple recording processes. We have a small church and I use this to quickly and easily record weekly sermons. The only options we had were to use a USB studio mic which was far from ideal and didn't hook up easily through the mixer board, or get a $600 CD recorder. This simple machine creates an easily usable MP3 file straight to a USB drive or SD card which can then go straight into a simple CD burning program. No manipulation, conversion or long process necessary. This thing is great!!

At this price level, I wasn't expecting a super smooth product and indeed didn't get it. :)I wanted a rack mounted MP3 player for our Church's pre-service music that could also record in stereo. The REC5 does both functions pretty well. Things to know about it:There is no way to select between the USB drive and the memory card. If the USB is inserted, it overrides the memory card. Not necessarily a bad thing, I put the pre-service music on the card and then can plug in the USB drive for recording.SD card only - no SDHC. Still, 4 gig holds plenty of music for what we do. Up to 8 gig USB drive.Play order is the order the MP3s were copied to the card and cannot be changed. No Playlist support. I haven't experimented completely, but it looks like it plays the root directory first, then any sub folders. Does support skip to next file via a button.Recording is awkward, but functional. Change mode switch to REC. Hit the Record arm button (Display changes to REC) Hit the record button, Record LED lights solid, then press again to actually start the recording and display flashes. No choices on MP3 settings, bit rate, etc. Records to a default directory that I haven't been able to change. Test recordings have sounded OK so far.Good luck understanding the 3 letter messages on the "LED ILLUSTRATOR" Display. None are explained in the manual. The manual leaves a lot to be desired in many ways. It does allow record pass through, i.e. when recording, the input is copied to the output of the device like many tape decks would do.Having both 1/4" and RCA inputs / Outputs is nice. Case and controls have the "[*]" in 1980's feel, but for this price, I expected that.Bottom Line: As long as you realize what you are getting, at 25% of the cost of other units, for what I'm using it for, I'd recommend it.

I have not found out all of the features due to the lack of the instructions.Any quality product is usually supplied with the specification/instructions so I`m beginning to think that I was sold a second hand one or factory reject.

This unit is outstanding. I have used many recorders in my day and this one tops them all. Easy to use, hook up is simple. Nice manual explains everything. If you need a rackmount digital recorder this is your only choice.

Comments about Technical Pro U-REC5 Rackmount USB/SD Digital Audio Recorder:
How about a recorder with no record-level meter? It goes downhill from there. Non-intuitive controls, choppy recording - looks like it was actually designed as some kind of logging recorder - appears to have chopped off the beginnings of recorded segments. No recording-time estimate displayed, so you don't know when you're running out of space. Need I go on?

This unit works very good - HOWEVER the manual needs to be updated to reflect what the LCD display numbers and other displayed information means. Web site is no help in this matter. I've been able to figure out what some of the displayed info means, but others, I'm still at a loss.

Comments about Technical Pro U-REC5 Rackmount USB/SD Digital Audio Recorder:
1. Unit has NO LEVEL METER!!!! What's up with that??
2. The recording I made, after fiddling with the controls for awhile to figure out exactly how to do this, has parts of phrases cut off regularly. Sound quality would be fine except not usable because of the above.
3. Item is difficult/confusing to operate.
4. Manual is sparse and difficult to understand. Instructions are incomplete.
5. No indication of actual recording quality or capacity in the manual or on the company's web site.

I bought 3 of these. The sound quality and lack of volume meters is par for the price. Sound quality is inconsistent. Sometimes it's great at other times you can hear MP3 artifacts.
The user manual is wrong, but it's not hard to figure out.

Product did not work properly out of box. The recording levels were too low. The control buttons are flimsy and saving a file onto a usb drive takes too many steps.

Several months into use, the unit has stated to be unreliable. Difficulties getting the recording to start, Sometimes the recording just stops with loss of session.
Tech support by company is very lacking. I have tried to contact them 3 times.

Reasonable device for the money. For church use here so it doesn't get a lot of exercise.. just record once a week. Not hard to operate, display is not difficult to understand after a few minutes but it really could use an audio level indicator, especially for recording. Headphone monitor helps to determine the right audio is present but it would be nice for a "correct" level indication. Has tone controls on record, nice enough chassis, connectors on rear are decent and the ground loop switch is helpful. All in all, it's doing the job I wanted and much better than a little portable that might walk off.

Comments about Technical Pro U-REC5 Rackmount USB/SD Digital Audio Recorder:
We use this to record live music and sermons at church. For the price, it is a good addition to the sound booth. Sound quality is good. But the display and interface are not easy to use, I had to make a cheat sheet to tape on the front for users to follow. The LED display gives 3 letter messages, but the user's guide doesn't tell you what they mean. And you have to depress many buttons to start recording, and there is a couple second delay, so you don't know if you actually started it or not.

We are a small church that has been looking for an inexpensive way to digtitally record the talks in order to upload them to our website. This recorder is an answer to prayer. It took just a few minutes to plug it into our sound system and is very easy to operate. I would highly recommend it.
