I have been trying to hook up an external drive to my DVR without any success for about 2 years. I live in Manhattan and my provider is Time Warner cable. The official company comment is that an external drive is not supported for any of their DVRs. I finally bit the bullet and bought this WD drive that is specifically designed to be connected to a DVR. It works as advertised!

After a week of this and two self repairs/diagnostics from TIVO I sent it back yesterday. Very disappointed.

Comments about Western Digital My Book AV DVR Expander:
Plugged it in, TIVO spotted it, formatted it and it worked great right out of the box. Saved $40 compared to exact same thing on TIVO website. Followed advice and bought a separate E sata cable.
Pleasant surprise: it didn't blow out the already recorded material on the internal drive, as I had been led to believe in some of the forums.

I used this to increase the capacity on my TiVo. It was recognized and configured without any issues. Other external eSATA drives were not recognized.

Comments about Western Digital My Book AV DVR Expander:
This was so easy to set up. And now my Tivo Series 3 has TONS of storage space. It used to stop giving me suggested programming because so many scheduled recordings were taking up all the memory. Now I have 120+ suggestions on top of all the no-need-to-delete scheduled recordings. This is a must-have Tivo accessory.
