Comments about Native Instruments MASCHINE - Computer Based Groove Production Studio:
i'm a music newbie/novice but very old hand at tech and gear. i studied Maschine for months before buying; i chose it over other (and more traditional) paths to "studio" music production such as Ableton because of it's wonderfully thought-out and fine-grained assemblage of features; DAW (with 1.6 software release); "beat box"; live performance ability (on-the-street is where instrumentation development happens!); especially the hardware (eg. hands-on) interface. but also substantially because of NI's rock-solid overall quality. i've been using Traktor for a year (now Pro 2) and never have i used more reliable and exquisitely designed software. Using AUDIO DJ 2 sound "card", best sound interface i've ever used. Soon to get the 6 in/out version for Maschine.
I'm very conservative and picky with gear; i don't like to own lots of gadgets, and i fully exploit things i do get. Maschine will certainly be one of those long-lived joys.
i've used a sequencer before so i'm at least vaguely familiar with the "model"; but the relationship of groups/patterns/scenes is hard to puzzle out from the documentation. it's a model you have to hold in your head as you build the model with the hardware interface, and the mappings of function to song components are vague. this may be due to my utter newbie-musician status. the computer screen view is more like a "typical" sequencer.
finally, it is not "easy to use" from my POV but that is not a complaint AT ALL -- Maschine is a complex system, it requires dedication to extract the incredible richness; i knew that up front, i'm fine with it, and look forward to gaining some mastery over it.
