I needed it to improve the ergonomics of the camera, and the price was a bit too enticing. I was told the wiring is better than the Zeikos version, so for a few dollars more, I bought this one. The shutter is not the soft-press type you find on the pro Nikon bodies, but is the type that matches the Nikon D90 original, with two distinct levels when you press it, which is fine with me. I have heard that the Nikon MB-D80 has a soft-press shutter on it. Don't know if that's true or not. It works as it should, and holds tight, but there are two things you should know.
1. The AE-L/AF-L button also changes focus point if you rotate the sub-command dial. Also, the paint comes off that button almost immediately, but for me that's not really an issue. You get what you pay for.
2. Far more importantly, both slots work, but Slot 1 is more finicky than Slot 2. Slot 2 will indicate the proper battery charge level regardless if you insert the grip into the camera with a battery in it, or if you insert the battery into the grip AFTER the grip is attached to the camera. Slot 1 only indicates the proper charge if the battery is inserted into the grip BEFORE the grip is attached to the camera. I don't know why this quirk happens, and it almost caused me to return it, but a few minutes of experimentation told me otherwise. I only use one battery in the grip as I find that is enough for a day of shooting and I want to minimize weight. Be aware of this.
For the money, this can't be beat. Be aware of the quirks, but that shouldn't stop you from saving a whole load of money by getting this one instead. The grip actually features a real rubberized grip instead of the textured plastic on the D90 grip, which makes it a pleasure to hold. I'd get this one, if I were you.

After less than one year of use in my D90, the batter grip stopped working with 2 batteries. If I put 2 batteries in, it indicates that the batteries are dead and camera will not turn on. If I use just one battery, in either slot, camera turns on and reads 100% battery life. I have a total of 6 batteries and have tried all of them, so I know it's not a battery issue. It was great while it worked, but for a few $$ more, there are better options. This is one example where you get what you pay for.

Comments about Vello BG-N2 Battery Grip for Nikon D80/90:
It is what it is. I do like this grip. I smashed my first vertical grip, and did not want to put in a lot of money because I am looking to upgrade. I use use this on a D80 and can't say I have any problems. The grip does feel "inexpressive," the door for the battery compartment feels thin and easy to break. The turn wheel on the grip are a little harder to turn then I feel they should be. Like I said I do like this grip, It feels good in my hand and well balance. It is lightweight, so I can easily hold it for long periods of time.
I like what I spent my money on and it still allows me to upgrade when I can.

Comments about Vello BG-N2 Battery Grip for Nikon D80/90:
I use a D80 and I smashed my first vertical grip, I am not very gentle with my gear. Due to my first experience, I chose not to spend the money on the Nikon version. I am looking to up grade soon also. I went with Vello's BG-N2, and can't say to would not do it again. It definitely feels "inexperience." The door to the battery compartment feels thin. The grip feels good in my hands, and well balanced. The turn wheels on the grip do not turn as easy as I would like but are useable.
All and all I do like the grip, I was able to get the grip that I wanted without spending the money towards an upgrade.

I've had my D90 for about 2 years now and I shoot a lot of portrait oriented photos and I have no idea how I ever lived without this! Install was simple... here's a tip on the battery compartment latch, open it to a 45º angle and just pull it off. The extra AA battery tray will be an awesome extra piece for travel and accidentally forgetting my charger. I recommend picking up a couple extra lithium batteries to go along with the grip. Just makes it easier to have multiple for the grip. And yes, the grip works with only one battery in it!

I bought this grip for my Nikon D90. It is very well made, feels solid but not heavy. It provides all the controls you have on your camera for vertical shooting. It is ideal for shooting portraits in vertical orientation, very comfortable and it keep the camera very straight. It is a lot cheaper than the Nikon version. It even has a space port to store your battery cover right on the grip. The tripod socket has a metal right inside to add security.

Only used the BG-N2 battery grip one time so far but I know I will enjoy this new addition to my Nikon D90. Gives camera the feel and look of the D3 which I plan to purchase soon. Really like the fact that shooting in portrait mode which I do a lot is much more comfortable. I plan to get one for my wife's D40 also.

The Vello grip does everything the Nikon grip does and for a third the price. The grip feels great when mounted, the shutter button and wheels work as if they were on the camera itself. I am glad i purchased this grip.

I have been using this grip for several weeks now and I truly love it. It is robust and does not feel cheap or poorly made. The second shutter releas button located on the grip itself makes for ease of shooting vertical shots without having to re-adjust one's hands. Batteries hold a good charge and the battery compartment door closes tightly and secures easily. I would totally recommend this piece of equipment to any serious photographer

Comments about Vello BG-N2 Battery Grip for Nikon D80/90:
The Vello grip has a nice design. It accepts 2 El-3 batteries as described, or 6 AA batteries if you choose. The grip feels just like the grip on the D90 and it has 2 jog dials so you can easily switch up settings in manual mode.
I have been using for a week and I love it. I shoot many times in portrait mode and this helps a great deal as I can keep the camera in portrait longer and not hurt my elbow.
The ergonomics are superb, and the setup feels solid. There is a large screw mount that goes right into the screw mount of the camera where you would put a tripod. The grip also has a screw mount at the bottom so you can attach it to a tripod.
The only down side is it is not exactly composed of the same material as the D90 and that makes it feel a little less organic.

It seems to make the lenses focus faster, but mostly this is imagination. The camera is much better balanced with the grip in spite of the added weight.

It is so nice not to have to change batteries during a wedding. The grip feels very comfortable, too. The ability to take a picture while holding the camera verticle is one of the best things about this battery grip.
