The 4TB Network Space Max Storage Solution from LaCie is a storage server allowing you to store and share files across all the various computers on your home network. It stores all your media and data backups in a single, central location for easy access by all your in-network devices. The server can be used as an iTunes server, a media streaming server, and more. It boasts 4TB data storage capacity and features a Gigabit Ethernet connection and a USB 2.0 interface. It provides sustained data transfer speeds up to 65MB/s read and 35MB/s write.

A front-side USB port allows you to expand your storage capacity, quickly add files to the server, or utilize an attached printer as a network printer. The dual installed high-capacity HDDs can be configured for optimal security or optimal capacity--depending upon your specific requirements--directly from the Dashboard. Security mode, or RAID 1, ensures automatic disk mirroring, which stores all files on one disk and backs them up on the other. This way, if one drive fails, your data remains fully intact. Capacity mode, or RAID 0, does not offer a redundant array, but rather stores data on both disks to give you double the storage space.

Stream music, pictures, videos, and more through any computer or UPnPTM certified player or adapter, including a PlayStation 3 or Xbox. Computers that have iTunes installed are also capable of streaming the music stored on the Network Space Max. Just move files onto the server and enable the multimedia service, then sit back, relax and enjoy music from any networked iTunes client or compatible playback device.

You can get your Network Space Max up and running in a matter of minutes using the intuitive Dashboard management utility. Switch between capacity and security modes, allow remote access, download torrents, or manage files, backups, and private accounts with ease, right from your browser.

With MyNAS remote access, the Network Space Max keeps you connected to your data, regardless of your location. Accessing your Dashboard from any computer outside of your home network is even easier now: All you need do is create a unique MyNAS login name right from the Dashboard on your home computer. Any time you need to access your data, simply enter your URL (mynas.lacie.com/yourname) into any browser to securely log in to your Dashboard remotely. From the Dashboard, you'll be able to download, delete, and stream files with ease. MyNAS affords you complete control over the data stored on your Network Space Max, whether you're lounging in the coffee shop on the corner or vacationing in Timbuktu.

Plus, the LaCie MyNAS mobile app now further simplifies remote access to your networked devices. You can share, manage, and view files and documents, and playback media on-the-go from your iPhone or iPad. The MyNAS mobile app grants you complete access to your Network Space 2 through a secure connection with your MyNAS unique login name and URL.

I use the product as a network storage device for sharing files from PC's and Mac's on the same network, including business & personal files. I had hoped to use the device as an "iTunes" network server to enable me to share files, but this has been a dissapointment.

The device will enable you to "share iTunes" files across certain types of devices (UPnP), but it will give you no functionality for sharing iTunes across computers with iTunes vs. turning the network sharing device on in iTunes. If you want iTunes to manage your libraries, you will not be able to have 2 different users with 2 different iTunes use the same files on the device. If you think you and your kin will be able to use your own iTunes to share the same music on the server when you sync your iPods, you will be disappointed. You can only share while on the network.

The technical support (TELEPHONE technical support) is excellent. The literature support (manual) is not clear on a number of issues and setup can be confusing. Getting multiple computers to "see" the Network Space MAX can be an issue, and the LaCie Network Assistant is in the words of their own tech support "buggy", so I had to find other ways to get the computers to "see" the device.

Hey nothing out there is that exciting - but this looks nice, is relatively quiet, has good power-saving capabilities, and the fact that I could get a real human being on the phone to help me set it up (after I gave up trying with the manuals) differentiates this from most providers out there I know.

I think if you buy it for iTunes you may be disappointed (unless you really care about sharing your files on an in-house device such as an XBox). But this probably is the machine to buy if you care a bit about aesthetics or tech support.

I've been using this drive for a couple of months now. I bought it mainly because of its networking ability. It's easy to install and convenient to use. I have set it up in the RAID 0 mode, which gives me 4TB of storage space. I have setup media streaming, photos and videos sharing on other devices on the network. The drive works like a champ. The web interface is well done. Overall, I'm very happy with the product and highly recommend it.

I bough this NAS for mirrored backup of my data and to share photos, music and video on the home network. The drive works very well for these tasks. The installation wasn't difficult. It only takes a few clicks to configure RAID. The software is supplied with the drive, and it's perfect for my needs. Overall I'm very happy with this NAS and would recommend it.

A good solution for a home network. This drive was very easy to set up. It can be configured in RAID 1 or RAID 0 mode. I opted for RAID 1 for maximum redundancy. The drive works quietly and doesn't heat up much. The speed is good. So far I really love it!

I needed a solution save the 6 years digital pictures I have.
This driver seemed to be a good compromise for me!...

It is nice, configuration pretty easy (even if some function are complicated), and I could centralize everything I have.
The use over the wifi is a little slow (might be my installation), pretty fast with direct ling
Now, I would have to make the test of one driver failling... I hope everything will be OK!..

The product was a little difficult to setup and the instructions were somewhat lacking. But once I got everything setup it works great and offers a great RAID 1 backup. The only reason I gave it 4 Stars and not 5 is because of the setup. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs a good network storage device.

Comments about LaCie Network Space Max (4TB):

I picked this up to serve as my main household media server. I run it in a raid-1 configuration, and the drive is mapped to our household laptops and computers. The raid-1 makes me a little less nervous about using it as a media server (but you still have to back up your drives!) and it is plenty fast on our network.

Because of where my router is located, the drive is actually sitting behind our TV in the living room, and it is so quiet you do not notice it unless I am working with the files extensively. As a bonus it is wife-friendly: She does not mind the look of it sitting on our media cabinet.

Admittedly I do not use many of the other features of this drive, and I cannot speak to them. The interface is pretty well put-together, but the software on the CD was very out of date, and it took a long time to get everything updated.

I use the Lacie Max as a file server and time machine for all of my families 4 computers and Network TV's . All of the devices in the house can easily access the drive without any of the other computers having to be on to act as the server, as is the case with FireWire drives. I have had one problem with the drive needing to be rebooted every week or so but I've just upgraded the firmware and it hasn't happedwd since.

Comments about LaCie Network Space Max (4TB):

I bought this device for the sole purpose to store my important data that I use for work and be able to access it from anywhere as I travel for work.
This is what you see in the adds:

        "Access Your Files from Anywhere
In addition to providing a networked connection to all of your home computers, the Network Space MAX features Remote Access, which allows you to log in to your Network Space MAX from anywhere you have an Internet connection. Next time you're on the road and you need that important document, simply log in to your Network Space MAX and grab what you need, even if you're halfway round the world. "

Well, how to do this is not documented anywhere. you get a youtube link to tell you how to make a synonym of your ISP provided IP address and that's it.

It simply does not work that way. No technical requirements are actually documented anywhere and no example is provided.

If I knew the above was a misleading statement, I would not have bought it. I am asking several technical forums if anyone knows as even Lacie's tech support does not seem to be interested in getting this to work.
