A stand is required but not included with this light. Please be sure to purchase a stand to mount this light on.
The Impact Octacool-6 Fluorescent Light Kit with Octabox (6 Lamps) is a great choice for the photographer or videographer seeking a broad, flattering light source with unique fall-off characteristics for portraiture, fashion or events.
Octagonal-shaped light sources have long had a reputation as the preferred portrait-shooter's light source. The shape offers an especially large surface area which produces that legendary "wrap-around" light, which envelopes the subject while creating natural-looking catchlights in the eyes.
The kit is comprised of a separate 6-lamp Octacool light head and removable Octabox. Each of the daylight-balanced 28W lamps outputs 1,400 lumens of light for a total of 8,400 lumens measured at 3.3 feet. Three switches on the rear of the fixture control 2 lamps each allowing you to vary the output in 2,800 lumen increments. The head's standard 5/8" receiver mounts to a huge variety of light stands and gripware with 5/8" studs.
The included Octabox has a removable inner baffle and front face allowing even greater flexibility from hard to ultra-soft light. The light head also comes with a removable aluminum reflector for a bright, contrasty lighting option.

Comments about Impact Octacool-6 Fluorescent Light Kit with Octabox (6 Lamps):
There was a defective bulb on arrival, but new one was sent immediately free of charge. Light box works well and gives off great amount of lighting. Adjustable light intensity works wonderful. However, setup and take-down time does require patience. Air cussioned stands don't offer much protection in colder environments and feel a little cheap. I would recommend for a good studio setup, but you might want to pay the higher price for more portable setup when doing on location work. For the price, you can't beat this setup.

Replaced a homemade lighting setup for small product photography. Debated between strobes and continuous lighting - very happy with these lights. Switches make it easy to control light output. Included stands are sturdy and easy to adjust. Quality lights at an affordable price.

I've wanted one of these for a while, finally got one and was not disappointed. Nice, bright, even light dispersion, it's seriously made a positive difference with my indoor shooting.
I use this lighting kit for my main light source and use my smaller Hot Shoe/flash soft box kit to highlight where needed. The Octacool 6 Fluorescent Lighting Kit sufficiently give's me the main light source needed for the smaller area's I shoot in.
The only thing that I will point out as a possible "con" would be the plastic stand mount bracket and the six soft box steel rod's are a pain to install, not the most convenient assembly but all in all, great product.

I gave this a 5 stars for the lights. The bracket that fits into the tripod is made of plastic. One busted when I was setting it up but B&H replace it with no problems. Be careful setting it up.

Best use is with a reflector to acquire 3 point lighting
It is great the many options available. Three switches to vary lighting then you have the two separate diffusers. Very sturdy stands with good extension height.
Was unfortunate that kit arrived one bulb damaged. Good thing I checked before 2 days passed after delivery so B&H sent out a replacement rapidly.

I was using two softboxes that were not bright enough and had a yellowish color to it, gave this one a try and what a difference! Having 6 bright white and cool bulbs really make it all work now. [...] Easy set up and a nice buy for a small studio portrait set up. I might buy another one if needed w/o hesitation.

Comments about Impact Octacool-6 Fluorescent Light Kit with Octabox (6 Lamps):
We use this in the studio and in the field. It's lightweight despite the size when fully assembled. Plenty bright even when using two or four lamps. This works really good to soften shadows with the diffusion panel from a 5-1 reflector. Been waiting for something to go wrong and eventually reflect the price that we paid for the unit but after two months of regular use it hasn't happened yet.

Comments about Impact Octacool-6 Fluorescent Light Kit with Octabox (6 Lamps):
I bought two of these and my studio is absolutely set for indoor shooting. The lights stay very cool and they're pretty big so you get a very nice even light from it. Each light also comes with a dish that you can screw on in lieu of the soft box that gives a bit brighter output that's good for a rimlight or backlight that you don't get with just the soft box. Three switches in the back allow for control of the lights in increments of 2 (up to 6).
Not very portable however. You'd have to break them down and remove the lightbulbs if you wanted to take these somewhere else. The stands are really high quality and sturdy as heck!

Comments about Impact Octacool-6 Fluorescent Light Kit with Octabox (6 Lamps):
I use two of these lighting fixtures to shoot interviews. The light produced is more than adequate for my Panasonic HMC150. There is some setup tie required each time you use them, but this is the case with nearly any lighting option outside of LED panels and to be expected.
I was expecting far less from this lighting kit. The quality of construction is surprisingly high. The only complaint I have so far is that the tension rods for the softbox bend out of shape too easily. I imagine that they will have to be replaced pretty soon and I've only rigged up the softbox maybe five times.
One big question you must answer for yourself is how you will store these. The aluminum reflector is quite large. I bought a Pelican 24" cube case and figured a way to fit two of these lights in it perfectly, though it was a bit of a geometrical puzzle.

Comments about Impact Octacool-6 Fluorescent Light Kit with Octabox (6 Lamps):
The softbox provides good even light and is plenty bright with the six flourescent spiral light bulbs.
The light would work well in the studio, unfortunately most of my work is on location shooting videos for business websites.
The softbox is hard to assemble which makes it tough for location shoots.
Still, it works OK when you bounce it off the ceiling with the reflector on.
I wouldn't call the Octacool 6 a portable light.
I would recommend it to someone as a good studio light.

I bought this light to make taking pictures of my daughter easier, and better. Our house has poor lighting, and this light has made a huge difference. I am now using it for our family portraits too.

Comments about Impact Octacool-6 Fluorescent Light Kit with Octabox (6 Lamps):
First off, I am just starting out with studio lighting so the main reason I considered this kit was the low price point.
Got home from work at 6pm, opened the box and had the kit running for an in-home shoot at 7pm. First time ever setting one of these up, and the instructions were helpful.
The lighting was really effective inside during daylight and when I ran the lights outside with an extension cord, they were productive as well. The softbox cover worked great indoors and when I needed extra power I took the cover off outside and spaced the lights accordingly.
I'd say having a dimmer on each light is probably more useful than the 3-switch setup these kits use. But, as a starter kit or supplemental pro kit these certainly are great for the price. If I needed more flourescents I'd probably pick another pair of these up.
I give the kit 4-stars for the following reason: I'm positive that my opinion is biased due to my inexperience with pro kits. This kit has no dimmer, so that reduces options. Also, the supplied stands do not go very low, again reducing options (however I just removed the lights and put them on the floor..problem solved).

Comments about Impact Octacool-6 Fluorescent Light Kit with Octabox (6 Lamps):
This unit produces a very nice almost-natural light. I've been using it to light seated subjects for video documentary interviews. They don't let off a lot of heat which is great for lengthy interview sessions. Not super bright. For example: ISO 400 1/60 f4.0, so you need the lights placed fairly close to the subject. Not bright enough for a wide shot. I found the softbox somewhat difficult to assemble. Good studio light, not portable.
