The 2TB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive from Iomega is an external desktop drive featuring a pair of FireWire-800 ports, a USB 2.0 port, and a 3-port USB 2.0 hub! FireWire-400 is supported via an included adapter cable.
The drive features a design that is designed to match the look and feel of the original Mac mini. It can be stacked with that computer, and can also rest atop the redesigned Mac mini and Airport Extreme Base Station. It ships formatted as an HFS+ volume for use with OS X. Windows users with Mac envy can certainly use it with their systems, but they'll have to reformat it as a FAT32 or NTFS volume to do so.
Iomega provides a license for their comprehensive protection suite with the drive -- you'll have to download the actual software package from their web site. The protection suite includes Iomega QuikProtect and Trend Micro Smart Surfing for Mac. It also includes Roxio backup software and MozyHome Online backup for Mac and Windows.

This is my first hard drive backup and I have spent a lot of time doing research and I finally decided on the MiniMax desktop 2TB HD.This Hard Drive is exceptional for Mac users!Easy to use and extremly fast with the firewire 800I backed up 400GB in less than 2hrs. When they say 2TB they mean it, there were no system files taking up any space on the drive. It looks very nice and matches the Imac look and feel. Another reason I got this drive is because you can daisy chain to another one if you need more room and if you stack them they will look better than having many different backup drives.Overall I am very happy with this HD and I would recommend it anyone who wants a solid and fast desktop HD. People should remember that this is a backup drive and it can fail. So if there is something important you want to backup burn it to a dvd or blu ray disc. So far I have no problems and I am very happy they include a 3 year manufacturer warranty.About B&H:I am from Canada and couldn't find a better price than with B&H. [...] I will definitely be doing more business with B&H photo. I hope this helps anyone who is looking for a new backup HD.

I bought 2 of these for backing up my video projects and to clear space on my internal drives. One drive seems to be functional but has a slight odor to it after running for 8 hours tranferring 1 terabyte. It's kind of like a burning electrical smell but seems very faint. The other drive when it arrived was in a perfect box with no dents but when I removed the drive it had multiple pieces rattling around inside. It sounded like plastic and metal but there wasn't any physical damage on the outside. [...] In the end I would recommend these drives [...] the one that works seems to run fine. The price for 2 terabytes can't be beat on FireWire 800 external drives that are reliable.

Comments about Iomega 2TB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive:
The drive was easy to set up and mounted on my Mac Mini with no problems. I have it connected with Firewire and it is fast. I use it for my iTunes library and I stream video to my Apple TV. It has never lagged in any area, so I am happy with the performance.
I also tried connecting with the USB cable, but my Mac thinks it is USB 1.1 rather than 2.0 and so performance was horrible. If you connect both USB and Firewire you will gain the use of the USB ports on the drive, but you loose the Firewire speed and all communication slows to USB speed. I am only using the Firewire connection.

No stars. The hard drive did not mount onto the computer. I sent it back for a refund which was done promptly. B&H has the best service of any company around.
I do own another Iomega 2TB Drive (the stand up model) and I give that 5 stars. Works great and has no problems. I think this was just a defective model.

Comments about Iomega 2TB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive:
Hard disk failed on me three months after the warranty expired. Data recovery was "discounted" to just under $1700 by Iomega's 3rd party vendor. I'll never buy another Iomega product after my experience with this drive.

Comments about Iomega 2TB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive:
I use this drive as a back-up on my mac and it's quiet and flawless. I love the options for the various ports. I have good luck with the Iomega drives, so keep coming back to them. This one was a few extra bucks for the 'apple look' which I like. The other version of Iomega work great as well, except the power switch and the way they sit are a tad clunky. I'm very pleased with this version.

Comments about Iomega 2TB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive:
The Minimax footprint exactly matches my Mac Mini and provides seamless expansion for my growing AV library. It's quiet and fast. You could get more GBs for the $, but pairing the mix of port selections, hub, and fit with the Mini is ideal. Again, B&H makes the purchase all the more ideal with knowledgeable service. So far, so good.

This is my second Iomega external drive. first one is going strong, just needed more space. Set up on my Mac couldn't be easier, truly plug and go. Firewire connections make my OSX time machine backups fast and non-invasive. Compact and noiseless. Highly recommend.

Comments about Iomega 2TB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive:
for a mac user the options for connecting are excellent. An 800 firewire, 400 Firewire or usb port - whichever is suitable.
We'll see over time whether the product can keep the 5 star rating.

This is the third Iomega drive I bought over the last year, the first two were 1TB, this one is 2TB. They work fine with a Macbook Pro 13.3" 2010. I had one for a year, all are running fine so far. They are firewire as well as USB drives so work fine for video.

Comments about Iomega 2TB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive:
I'm mainly using this drive for Time Machine backup purposes with an iMac (via Firewire 800). Install was smooth and easy -- no problems or configuration issues. The drive is VERY quiet, with little noticeable vibration (less than my previous Lacie Quadra). Heat buildup is minimal. The drive is barely warm to the touch, at least when it's not stacked (mine is not). Highly recommended. Note, I am also using a Belkin "Conserve Smart" power strip, which automatically triggers the drive and my external speakers to turn on/off when the iMac is powered up or down. Works perfectly.

It is too early for me to make a fair comment, but so far its superb, I should say. Having used Iomega products for long time (Since first 100mb ZIP Drive) I believe this is a reliable Device, especially for Video work.

Comments about Iomega 2TB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive:
The minimax was easy to set up, comes with all the cables you might need, and is an exact match in size to my Mac Mini (2008). Time machine had no problem using it and there's no problem using it to store movie files that iTunes streams to my Apple TV.
Not so good: blue light and logo in the center. Kind of defeats the purpose of matching to the Mac mini.
Good to know: must be placed below the Mac, or at least not on top of it. Q

I'm a freelance videographer and this is my second Iomega hard drive. The first one has performed flawlessly and is extremely easy to use. I really like the capability to link with my older Firewire drives.
