Comments about Visioneer Strobe 400 Duplex Mobile Color Scanner:
I was excited about receiving and using this product. Then, through online research, I uncovered a FATAL flaw regarding the PaperPort and OCR software which power the scanner.
The software is provided Nuance Software. Nuance has an activation process, which is fine by me - Microsoft, Adobe, etc., do the same. HOWEVER, Nuance adds an utterly ridiculous twist. They take a hardware "finger print" of your computer system, and then check to make sure that it doesn't change. If it changes, then your software becomes deactivated, and you have to reactivate it.
Problem is, Nuance factors in external hard drives. This means that, every time you plug in (or unplug) an external USB drive, for example, the Nuance software will deactivate itself. Yes, you can explicitly reactivate it, but only for a very limited number of times. After that, you have call Nuance and beg for mercy, and, reportedly, they treat such requests with deep suspicion.
I contacted Nuance customer support via telephone to verify my understanding of the activation process. The rep confirmed it, and gave me the official company recommendation, namely, that I uninstall their scanner software prior to adding/removing an external drive, and then re-install afterward.
This is simply preposterous since I plug/unplug USB drives and compact flash cards (which are treated as drives) on a daily basis.
Anyhow, this flaw alone prompted me to return the Visioneer scanner unopened. To be fair, it reflects more on Nuance than it does on Visioneer, however, the fact remains that, for my purposes, the product in sum is completely unacceptable.
I would advise potential customers to weigh this shortcoming carefully prior to purchase.

Comments about Visioneer Strobe 400 Duplex Mobile Color Scanner:
The Strobe 400 hardware makes an excellent copy and it's small footprint can go anywhere on desk. Wish the cables were longer. The software loaded fine on Windows 7 pro laptop but would not load on Windows XP Pro SP3. My work around took several hours downloading and piecing together items to get it to work on main desktop. Software is okay but is limited in setup. I'm getting used to it's quirks and my office specific needs. Not for the faint at heart. OCR is useless when scanning forms. With the limited paperless office software on the market I'm glad I at least have good hardware. Maybe future software will show up.
