The Sony Alpha A390 Digital SLR with 18-55mm Lens is a compact DSLR designed around a 14.2 (effective) megapixel APS-C format CCD sensor, that utilizes a Sony BIONZ image processor to capture and process image files as RAW, JPEG, or RAW+JPEG, at speeds of up to 2.5 frames-per-second. The Alpha A390's body design is stylish, with an intuitive button layout for easy operation. In addition, the lightweight body and revised grip make the camera more comfortable to hold and carry. Files can be stored onto Memory Stick PRO Duo or SD/SDHC memory cards.
For indoor snapshots or for eliminating 'raccoon eyes' when shooting portraits outdoors on sunny days, the Alpha A390 has a built-in pop-up flash (guide number 10 in meters @ ISO 100). There's also a hot-shoe for use with Sony dedicated TTL flashguns and other Sony-compatible flashguns.
For composing images, the A390's eye-level pentamirror viewfinder shows 95% of the total image area. A rear-mounted tiltable 2.7" TFT Clear Photo LCD features Live View with Quick Auto Focus, which lets you compose and shoot pictures in real-time using the LCD, just as you would with a point-and-shoot camera. In addition, the LCD display tilts up or down for low or high-angle shooting situations, such as capturing a child's first steps or shooting over a crowd.
To facilitate sharp, well-exposed images, the Sony Alpha A390 utilizes a 9-point autofocus (AF) system that can be used in single or multi-shot mode. There's also an 'eye-start' mode which kick-starts the AF system when you raise the camera to your eye. For on-the-nose exposure readings, the A390 features a 40-segment honeycomb-pattern SPC TTL metering system and Sony's D-Range Optimizer for balanced shadow and highlight details.
Other features of the Sony Alpha A390 include a Dust Reduction system, ISO settings that can be adjusted from a native 100 through an extended ISO 3200, a wide selection of shooting modes, an easy-to-read, easy-to-use menu interface, on-screen help guide and Sony SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system for sharper imagery when shooting under low-light conditions with all Sony, Minolta, and Konica AF-mount lenses.
The included Sony SAL-1855 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT AF lens has an equivalent focal length of 27-82.5mm in the 35mm/full frame standard. This is the perfect starter lens, allowing you to shoot close-up and distance subjects. The Sony Alpha A390 powers off a Sony NP-FH50 lithium-ion battery, which can capture 500-plus images-per-charge.

Bought this to give as an X-mas gift but snuck it out of the box to play for a day. Very user friendly and explainations regarding modes are easily viewed on the LCD. I didn't process any pics, but they looked great on screen. For a new user, this is the way to go. Sony may not yet have mastered high ISO, but since I didn't play with that on this camera, I'm withholding judgement.

One reviewer posted a "con" that it does not have video...it's a still camera, not a video camera. If your looking for a video camera, don't look at DSLR's. Best billboard I saw said "If it has a ringtone, it's not a camera".
Camera's are not for video, video camera's are not for stills and phones are not either...sheesh.

This Sony has some great features. I mostly use the eye piece to take all my photos, but the tilting screen has already come in very handy. Especially went looking at photos. You can set the camera down flat, tilt the screen and comfortably review all photos. Great clear photos - fast for shooting the kids running around. Even got some great fireworks shots this weekend.

I literally bought this camera 3 days before our vacation out in Nevada and Arizona. I love it so much that I took over 700 pictures!!! I am by no means an expert with a camera, but with the Alpha A390 you can't go wrong. I even took it off of the auto mode and fiddled around with the settings. Great fun and a super camera!!

I took a college photography course and this camera has all the required features to get the most out of the course and the camera. My professor recommended I get an SLR camera to utilize all I learnt in the course. I would suggest this camera for a serious beginner & an intermediate photographer. This camera has Auto and Manual settings that allow the user to see adjustment settings in either mode (this is a great learning tool). The camera can be upgraded as the user learns.

Comments about Sony Alpha A390 Digital SLR with 18-55mm Lens:
I don't have much experience at all with SLR cameras, but decided to make the investment. I've always used Sony digital cameras and have been confidant in their products. It's a sturdy camera and has easy to use features. So far, I have been very pleased. I'm sure I'll be even happier once I take some courses to get better acquainted with this type of camera. Overall, an affordable first time DSLR.

I haven take a few photography course in high school and college as well as worked as a graphic artist for a professional photographer...this camera is great! Im a Sony fan. I have had 2 Sony point and shoots and loved them and decided to go for something a little higher scale. Granted this isnt a professional camera with all the bells and whistles but I dont need all that.....for now. Its great at portraits and that is something Im getting into especially with kids. I love the automatic modes and the manual even though I dont have the patience to deal with much manual. There isnt anything I dont like about this camera because it serves its purpose perfectly.

This camera is amazing, from all the aspects.
It has a great picture, good steady shot, a lot of different ways to take a picture and some other features that i haven't even learn how to use it. I does take a little practice and it wouldn't hurt taking some courses to learn how to make your pictures look even better.

I purchased this camera to learn dslr photography. I am amazed at the quality of pictures this camera takes. I am getting compliments from established photographers in my area. So far I have used it to phtograph wildlife, landscapes, and sunsets. This weekend I will shift gears and begin photographing my son's baseball games. Thank you B&H, and thank you Sony.
