The 1TB Rugged USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive from LaCie allows you to take your data on the road and off-road. It features a durable, rubberized bumper and scratch-proof exterior. My 4 year old highly portable USB 2 passports are almost twice as fast as this. Also, the power cord is USB powered and therefore unswitchable via a switchable computer stand.

I used this HD in Europe and it worked great, it is small and fast and most importantly it doesn't required external power! One thing i have to say is that once I got back home, and I downloaded the pictures into Lightroom and somehow the pictures from the hard drive got deleted? luckily I had a second copy in a different HD. But that was weird and dangerous!

This is a great portable hard drive! However, my support for it is only if you are using it with USB 3.0 (sorry mac people). With 3.0 this hard drive is super fast for a portable drive and especially for being 1TB. It's awesome to be able to just plug one cord in and instantly have 1TB of extra storage space. Can't say the same for 2.0 which I believe requires you to plug in two cords (most likely for more power supply...which 3.0 supplies)
There are really only two downsides to the hard drive, one of which I have already mentioned.
1. USB 2.0 is kind of a pain, due the fact that you have to plug in two cords in order to get it to work, and speeds aren't all that amazing
2. The USB 3.0 isn't a universal cable. Meaning that one side is a normal male 3.0 plug, where as the other side is a weird shaped plug that will only work with this hard drive (to my knowledge)
All in all this is the perfect portable drive (provided you have 3.0), it's easy to cary around, and because of it's design rubber/aluminum I can throw it in my bag without worrying about it at all.

I love my LaCie hard drive. The size and 'rugged' make make it simply the best I've found for portable drives with this kind of space.
A must have for the photojournalism work I'm doing.
But be careful with the port... we had one of the ports break off on us and fall inside of the hard drive structure, without any real provocation of which we were aware. Good news is you can still get the information off easily, and the LaCie was great in terms of warranty, assistance, and replacement.

I purchased two of these for backup, one in the office and one in the safe deposit box. These are the best I could find for the task. The extra power supply cable is a bonus.
But they are a little large for air travel given all the stuff we carry so I will not buy another for that purpose.
But in this case, reliability and size are secondary and I would purchase again.

While this product is BUS powered, it requires a second USB power cord - not powered through the same cord that transfers data. Also, my computer did not recoqnize it as 1 TB - only showed up as 10 MB - not sure what the issue was, but, due to these issues, I returned it.
