THIS DRIVE IS 7 TIMES SLOWER THAN A REGULAR 7200rpm DRIVE ON FW800.
I work on a TV Production company and we have about 50TB worth of storage, various kinds of drives and systems. I really like LaCie, solid products. Unfortunately, this drive runs 7 times slower than your usual 7200 rpm on a firewire 800 connection. This is not explicit on the product description and that fooled me. I got 4 of these and i am exchanging them at this moment. I called tech support and they did not know right away why. After tests online (we used AJA System Test) we reached a numerical value for this performance and it was clear that that was the drives top speed. A senior tech support guy confirmed this and explained the cause: the encryption process. The drive encrypts everything you put on it, and that takes time. A lot of time. Too much time for me.
I strongly recommend you take this into consideration before acquiring this product.
Otherwise, the protection system and biometric date is pretty cool and keeps you safe from most normal people.

There were a number of minor annoyances I could have lived with on this drive, but the big one that got me to return the drive was that data disappeared. I created a folder on the drive, moved some files to it and the next time I accessed the drive, some were missing. Drive was formatted NTFS. I can't say if this problem was isolated to my drive, but that was enough. Also I used Firewire 800 to set it up, it worked okay with Firewire 400, but USB was not recognized.

ALL THE BAD REVIEWS ARE TRUE.
It no different then any other regular LaCie Rugged, it just got a back color and way SLOWER. The only reason you should buy this one, is if you really need to use password protection on it. Because you don't have the option to disable this function, so it always needs your fingerprints to make him work.
Didn't work for me, because I use a lot for transferring files to other people and different computers, so my fingerprint is always required.
And dismount after awhile without any reason, so doesn't work for transfer big files at once.

This drive has the transfer speed of a 1980's hard drive. I am a working professional and this drive transfer's speed crawls when I need it to be sprinting. Unless you have the worlds most patience, do not buy.
