I bought this drive because it is, to my knowledge, the only drive on the market that works with both Macs & PC interchangeably. Or so Seagate advertises...
I have an iMac desktop and a Lenovo laptop so I thought this drive would make a ton of sense for me. It has worked with my PC just fine, however, after two troubleshooting sessions with Seagate, it still does not work on my mac. I am able to read and write to the hard drive with my mac, however, after ~15 minutes (presumably when the drives sleep/idle), it freezes my Mac.
When Seagate was no help, I started searching around the internet for solutions and still haven't found one, although I have found that a ton of people seem to be having the same problem. I'm not terribly comforted by misery loving company.
I haven't exercised Seagate's concept of switching ports - hence the name goflex - but I think it's a great concept even though I suspect most users of the drive will stick with one port. Good to know that you can upgrade as technology evolves.
Final note, read & write speeds all seem to be what I'd expect from a USB 2.0 hard drive. I haven't benchmarked it; I'm sure you can find those numbers online if you're curious about the technical capabilities of the drive.

Comments about Seagate 1TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk External Hard Drive:
My Dish DVR was out of storage space so I purchased this disk to store programs I wanted to save. Hooked it up to the DVR, plugged it in and it reformatted and has worked flawlessly. Very pleased with the ease of connection and set-up. Older drives I have purchased were much more difficult to get to connect.

I needed a way to provide my client, who uses PC's in their office, with materials I worked on with my Mac Pro. This drive comes with all the necessary drivers to easily use files on both Mac and PC without the hassle of reformatting or using dual drives. Thanks Seagate!!

Comments about Seagate 1TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk External Hard Drive:
So far, I am pleased with my new Seagate hard drive. I use it to back up my computer and primary external hard drive, using a particular program to make clones of each on a regular basis. There's nothing like the security of having all your *ish* backed up!
Though, I like the Seagate hard drive, it disappeared from my desktop during my first backup session. I attribute the disappearance to two things, potentially: 1. I had changed the icon on the hard drive to something other than the orange hard drive image, and 2. My computer went to sleep during the backup transfer. To remedy the problem, I reverted the icon to its original image and adjusted the settings on my computer so that it won't go to sleep during backup.
So far, the disappearing act has not recurred and I'm happy with the hard drive. It's quiet, seems to be reliable, and is a discrete new addition to my desk.

Sleek design, simple and easy to use. I bought it because it will work with both a mac and a PC. You can't beat the price either for how much storage it can handle.

I bought this to replace an obnoxiously loud Iomega external HD that pooped out on me after less than a year of ownership. I use this for backups with Time Machine. It's incredibly quiet. I can't hear it when it's in operation. The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't use firewire but it's main use is for background stuff that I don't even pay attention to anyway.

The true test of a hard drive is how long it lasts before failure. I just got this one, so I don't know yet, [...] took minutes to install and is so quiet I can't tell it's working. I use it for backing up my important stuff - primarily tens of thousands of photos. You should get one because your "C" drive will betray you eventually.

use the 1TB hard rdrives to back up all my raw files (i am a professional photographer so i go through them quickly)
i have noticed if they get tipped over, even onto a soft carpet, they can lose all their data. this has happened to me twice. not good at all.

I bought it primarily because it is all 'automatic' for backing any files, etc. without prompting for an 'O.K.' to do so...
It is all 'hands free' backup....

Comments about Seagate 1TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk External Hard Drive:
I'm using the external drive as an additional drive for my extensive photo files, many in RAW format.
The drive was easy to set up, no fussy software, in fact, as I'm not using it for automatic backups it was easy to ignore the accompanying software, and my computer system (Windows XP) immediately recognized it for what it is. Solid connections.
Write time seems reasonable.
So far, I haven't found anything wrong with it; I haven't used it for very long though.
