The Tiffen Gray Scale is a basic tool used for assuring proper tonal balance in black and white photography as well as determining contrast and density in color photography. This easy-to-use accessory is placed within the photo frame and metered.

Since most black and white cameras are calibrated to meter for an 18% neutral gray tone, if you give the camera a precise reference point from which to meter off of, the tonal range at either end of the scale will fall in proper perspective.

The Tiffen Paper Gray Scale is available in two versions. The calibrated version is marked off in precise "steps" whereas the uncalibrated version softly blends from one tone to the next.
