The Photoshop CS5 Image Editing Software from Adobe is the industry-standard application for editing photos. The software, compatible with Mac operating systems, gives you all the tools necessary to edit digital images.
Photoshop uses a powerful layer-based approach for image editing. Using layers allows you to make adjustments to images without modifying aspects of an original. You can modify layer opacity and order, aiding in compositing tasks. Photoshop keeps track of each change you make to an image, allowing you to undo actions with ease.
Photographers will appreciate Photoshop's robust photographic toolset and tight integration with Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom application. You'll be able to adjust image curves, remove noise from digital photographs, simulate film grain, add vignettes, and sharpen images. The software can open all types of images captured by digital cameras, including RAW images.
You'll also be able to correct lens distortions and image perspective. This is a powerful tool for architectural photographers who need to remove keystone effects from images and anyone shooting with ultra-wide angle rectilinear of fisheye lenses who would like to remove distortions.
Photoshop also supports the creation of High Dynamic Range (HDR) images. It can create an HDR image from multiple images of different exposures. It can remove ghosting created by slight camera movement between exposures, and you'll be able to tone images via intuitive slider controls.
Creatives will appreciate the tight integration with Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Photoshop features a number of artistic image filters that can dramatically transform images. You'll be able to simulate different canvas types and brush strokes to create digital paintings. You can warp or stretch graphics, or move elements in images using the Puppet Warp tool.
Designers will appreciate the ability to isolate parts of images. You can cut out a model from a background with ease for use in a brochure. Photoshop is intelligent enough to correctly select complex parts of an image, including hair. You can go the opposite way as well -- you can remove a subject or object from an image and use the Content-Aware Fill to fill in the background with ease.
It is not without reason that Photoshop has become a verb in popular culture today. It's common to hear about someone who has "Photoshopped" a picture. Photoshop is the premiere application for image editing; it is a tool that every professional photographer and designer should have available.

Wow... Photoshop never ceases to amaze me. I used to have Photoshop 7 at home, and I still currently use Photoshop CS2 at work (we're upgrading soon).
Of course, all of the basics are still there, but man, the new features... Content-aware fill is really pretty amazing. If you're reading this you've probably heard and seen it already, so I'll spare the details. Suffice it to say that it really works. Of course, as picky as I am, I like to touch up after using it, but it really does a wonderful job just on its own. A content-aware option is now included with the healing brush as well, which is just as great.
I will say that the content-aware fill is only as good as your selection... If you make a broad sweeping lasso around an object, the fill tends to pull from weird spots. But, if you make a tighter selection (it doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be decent) and really pay attention to your selection, you will be much happier with the results. It took me a few tries to figure that out.
As for the rest of the software, the look and layout of the pallets is a bit different from what I'm used to, and I'm still adjusting. It's nothing major, though.
Honestly, that's all I've got. Yeah, I still use masks and blending modes and all of the other great things that Photoshop lets us do with ease, but I'm stuck on the content-aware fill, it's so much fun! I'm more or less a photo purist, so I don't enjoy doing a ton of manipulation... Most of the time it's a little contrast and saturation boost, some sharpening, and I'm done (which is why I also recently purchased Lightroom 3). I would occasionally make a ridiculous selection around something and try to mask it away and clone in the empty space... Now it's just so easy. Truly amazing.
Having never used CS4 I can't really say what the benefits are there... But if your experience and version history is similar to mine and you've been on the fence about upgrading to CS5, my suggestion is to take the plunge. Sometimes upgrades don't seem to be worth the hassle, but I think this version of Adobe Photoshop has some of the best new features they've come up with in a long time.

1. CS5 has become bloated. There are third party software that got installed without my knowledge, eg, Growl, etc...
2. It installed update notices on my menu dock, which is not where I want it.
3. Adobe software has become invasive -- reminds me of "RealPlayer", where pop-up messages are invasive, asking for updates, upgrades, collaboration with other users - huh? I just want to do photoshop work, nothing more.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop CS5 Software for Mac:
I hadn't upgraded my Photoshop in quite a while (old CS) and had to buy a whole new version since I had waited too long. I didn't know B&H had Mac software and so glad I discovered it on a casual search. Price was best I could find and appreciated free shipping. Great service! Learning this new version was much easier than I expected and wish I had purchased it much sooner!

Excellent product, takes you away from the numerous choices of software that could just do your head in.
Layering in CS 5 is in its own league, I find there is a lot there I would never use but hey my passion is growing and I believe it's the best platform to do everything as a one stop shop that gets rid of so many unnecessary confusing choices, considering the prices in Australia are over $1000 getting it from B and H was a great buy, I have been buying from B and H since 1997. CS5 is a one disc one dose it all software, delivery and product is excellent.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop CS5 Software for Mac:
I am a photographer (concert and landscape) with an education in graphic design. I first learned Photoshop (and the Adobe CS2 Suite) when I returned to school to learn graphic design digital. Coming from a film background, I am still amazed at all the refinements and adjustments that can be done digitally. Way more than dodging and burning, Photoshop offers a myriad of tools to tune up your images.
My upgrade was from CS3 to CS5. The big thing for me with Photoshop CS5 is Content Aware Fill. It has taken some on line videos and practice to master this but it is a big reason I upgraded (the other being Adobe's decision to no longer offer upgrades from more than the prior version).
The new Bridge is so much easier and intuitive to use: an icon for opening in Camera Raw, sequential sources listed above for easy access to specific files, grey background, star icon for ease of assigning favorites, workspaces listed above in bright letters, etc.
A good book to help in deciphering Photoshop's vast array of tools is Martin Evening's Adobe Photoshop for Photographers. I highly recommend this book as he is adept at explaining the different options in easy to read language.
At times, photoshop may have you tearing your hair out due to many different ways to do the same thing. But, find a way that works for you and disregard the other paths. It is just marketers' answer to try to please everyone.
I am glad I bought this program. The work flow has become better in Camera Raw and if you understand the function of Camera Raw, you are on your way to being an expert in post-processing. Of course, your capture should be spot on upon releasing the shutter. But, in cases where exposure is tricky, Photoshop will turn a maybe image into something that works.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop CS5 Software for Mac:
Photoshop is my favorite software. I've used it since Photoshop 7 and I decided to treat myself with CS5.
It helped me salvage, correct and give punch to my photographs so I can have exactly the image I had in mind when I clicked the shutter.
I had a course in college to learn how to use it and I found it very helpful because there's so much tools, it's not easy to learn how they work all by yourself.
Also, it's not only good with photos, I created great artworks with it. It's much more cleaner than the traditional techniques with acrylic paints, gouache and watercolors, no more mess in my room and no brushes to clean!
I think Photoshop is a must have software to anyone interested in imaging.

This is a huge improvement over my last version.
The 1 must have and useful function that stands out immediately is: Content-Aware Fill
Imagine having a photo where there are cables, trees or people that were not supposed to be there, well Content Aware Fill will take them out in as much time as it takes you to select them (provided that there is a pattern or something in the background which the software can fill out that space).
Takes a little bit of time to find the right way to use it, but once you do is amazing!
The only thing between 4* and 5* is the price, other than that a great buy

Having used a preCS version of photoshop for years retouching and preparing photos for print has given me a foundation to build on. With each use I'm finding it's capabilities far exceeding my expectations. Looking for a negative?, the only thing I can say is I wish it came with a printed manual, but nothing comes with a printed manual anymore. Simply put, It's great!

Comments about Adobe Photoshop CS5 Software for Mac:
PS CS5 can be overwelming and confusing, therefore invest some time in tutorials. This is not a workflow solution but probably the most powerful editing tool available. It works great with Lightroom (LR), and you can access it from within LR. There are some editing plug-ins that only run through PS, which makes this the corner stone of all editing.
It is pricey, and if you're new to photo editing, I would recommend starting with LR. If you're looking for a more advance tool, than this is the way to go. Adobe has/had discounts if you buy LR and PS together.

Wish there was less than one star because this does not deserve even one. Have had multiple problems installing Adobe's CS5 with no help from Adobe. However, did get one of their "Customer Service" reps to admit that they do have a few "bugs" with their Mac version. We switched from a Windows platform to Mac platform and it has been good except for CS5. It loads files in wrong locations and that's only the start. Forget about running any third party plug-ins. I could go on but the bottom line is to stay away from the Mac version of Adobe CS5.
