I started out my mousing with the little red eraser thing in the middle of the keyboard of an IBM ThinkPad. My first personal home-based machine was a Sony with a standard wired mouse. My first Mac came with a wired mouse with a nipple on top. My second Mac was a MacBook Pro with a large track pad. Each step of the change along was painful. Acquiring basic mousing skills is easy. Becoming proficient so as to be able to routinely manipulate all the buttons, sliders, etc. on the screen without feeling like the mouse is the long pole in the tent, takes time.
The magic trackpad is the first mouse that took no time for me to use without feeling like a novice. I suppose that's because the track pad on the MacBook Pro is so similar, but hey, I'll take zero learning time whenever I can over something else.
About the only thing I'm not yet used to with the magic trackpad is where to put it relation to my keyboard. I'm not used to having so many options.

I bought the trackpad based on the glowing reviews, but have found it to be problematic for me.
I had previously shut off the track pad on my laptop and installed a wireless mouse because a slight drag of a finger while typing would relocate the cursor to somewhere I didn't want to be, but thought that the magic trackpad would be better as I could place it away from the keyboard.
Unfortunately, I still have the problem of a slight drag of another finger on the surface of the pad leaves me somewhere I don't want to be.
nice concept, poor execution (probably on my part).

The track pad is extremely versatile. If you are using it on the couch or on the bed, be sure to put it on something rigid ... like a thick magazine or a lap desk so that the "click" will work.
In "Preferences" you can set up the track pad in many different ways. Because I come from the tragic world of PC computers, I needed a "right click" capability. You can do that with the Magic Track Pad.
I love this "mouse" device. It's really fantastic.

I got a new monitor for my macbook pro and put it in clamshell mode in a vertical stand off my desk... nevertheless the magic trackpad has worked great so far. I caved in and got it figuring that I would be annoyed if I didn't invest in something that would work with the back and forward gestures as well as the 4 finger gesture.
A note: the trackpad functions via 2 small ball pads on the bottom left and right corners. In order for it to work properly (click down), you must rest it on a solid surface

A long-time mouse user, I was a little hesitant to transition to the Magic Trackpad, but I am so glad I made the switch. As a user who works on the computer all day long, the ergonomics of the trackpad mean less strain on my hands and wrist. I am a fan of "tap to click" and the "three finger swipe" to navigate through multi-page files and sites. The cursor navigation is very precise and responsive. Cons: The "pinch" to zoom in or isn't compatible with many apps that I use, and I kept enlarging all of the icons in the finder window accidentally before I disabled that function. All in all, it's well-designed product.

When I went to a wireless mouse from a tethered one I was stoked. With the Magic Trackpad I've gone from dragging the mouse around to finger gestures on a stationary flat surface - and have gone from stoked to ecstatic! Not having to drag the mouse around is liberating. And the gestures that free me from pressing buttons on the keyboard are a bonus (e.g., the four finger swipe saves me from looking for and tapping the 'expose' key on the keyboard). Only four stars because not all gestures work in all programs.

I purchased my Apple iMac from B and H, and as for the last 40 years of purchases there, it arrived on time and worked great. The unit has a not so good keyboard and mouse, so I replaced both of them, with the expanded Apple keyboard and the Magic Trackpad. These were the best accessories I have ever purchased for a computer. I do lots of PhotoShop work, and the small mouse that came with the computer is difficult to use, and with a 27" screen, caused cramps in my hand. I have a MacBook with its terrific pad, but had never used such an item with a desktop. It is wonderful! Scrolling is simple, tapping is easier than with a mouse for selection, and working with photos in PhotoShop is almost like having a "tablet" for alterations. Once you use this for any use of your desktop, you will never go back to a mouse.

great invention and is the reason why i switched over to a mac.
