The Yamaha YHT-S400 Home Theater Package is a unique theater design with a subwoofer-integrated receiver and an extremely slim front speaker that fits in front of almost any TV.
The YHT-S400's sound bar stands at 2" high and fits in front of most 32 to 50" TVs without blocking the screen. In addition, the feet of the sound bar can be adjusted horizontally or vertically, or taken off entirely, for additional installation flexibility. By integrating the system's subwoofer into the receiver, Yamaha is able to offer users an easy connection to a full-featured receiver without adding a separate component and the ability to place the unit in a rack or on the floor in tight spaces.
The UniVolume technology maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. When watching TV while using UniVolume, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray movie or to listen to music on CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can startle other viewers.
With 7-channel discrete inputs, AM/FM tuner and connectivity to virtually any A/V source, your entertainment choices are endless with Yamaha's YHT-S400.

- UniVolume is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. Achieves surround sound with clarity and sound imaging unlike any other two-speaker system. You can hear clear dialogue from the front, with distinctly separate surround sounds and smooth movement around the sound field.
7.1 Channel: The Air Surround Xtreme has employed a newly developed virtual 7.1 channel technology that can independently recreate the surround-channel and surround-back-channel in stereo. The result of it is the clearly and amazingly identifiable sound sources from various directions.
Position Mode: This mode is capable of shifting the most effective listening spot on the row while keeping the sound field of multi-channel programming. The amazing ability to shift the best listening point by a mere balance adjustment has enabled the system to provide an ideal surround effect, even when listening not exactly in between two speakers.
Wide Mode: The "Wide Mode" is for two to three people listening laterally. Our original technology, "multi-points cross talks canceling" process, has enabled the system to create a comfortable surround feeling in a much larger area, adding a further value to the Air Surround Xtreme for the enjoyment with more than two people
- Made for iPod (Docking Station)
- The product is equipped to use an optional Yamaha Universal iPod Dock that lets you connect your iPod to this product. With the optional dock you can listen to your music and operate the iPod via the product's remote control while at the same time charging the battery on your iPod. Depending on your product's specifications, some will allow you to use the On-Screen Display feature on your video monitor to navigate your music. Some products can even allow you to view your photos and movies from your iPod on your video monitor

- The Bluetooth logo indicates that the product is equipped to use the optional YBA-10 Bluetooth Wireless Audio Receiver that lets you connect the dock to the receiver and supports A2DP audio streaming. - Dolby Digital
- The most popular 5.1-channel home theater sound system. An improvement over Dolby Pro-Logic in that it offers: 1) Full frequency response in all channels (3Hz - 20kHz), 2) discrete surround channels, and 3) a separate track for bass only, called the Low Frequency Effects channel

Bought this to enhance sound of my Samsung LCD, without having to install a true 5.1 speaker system. This product does the trick. While a true 5.1 surround sound should and cannot be expected, the system still creates a very convincing home cinema experience. The compact subwoofer fits into most racks and provides solid bass tones. Setup was easy and with 3 HDMI-in ports connecting my HD cable box, DVD player and Apple TV was no problem. The picture passed through to the TV via HDMI-out is the same quality as if connecting my devices straight to the TV. Setting up the perfect sound preferences takes a few moments, but not too long.
Minus points I give for the weak FM tuner. At least with the included antenna wire I do not receive any stations at all. I might have to try a different antenna though. Also connecting all or some devices through HDMI link in order to get rid of some remotes proofed to be impossible for me. But I wouldn't blame it all on the YHT-S400 as all devices are from different manufacturers, so that was probably a bit too much too ask for.

I´m using this home theater to see my blu ray movies and dvd and it has an excellent sound. It very simple to use, and is very good choice if you don't want to have a more than two pices of component. I have used for one year and I will buy another one if I have to choose again. No interface sound with my sharp tv.

If you are looking for a 7.2 surround sound expierence, this is not for you. If you are setting up a simple installation that you do not want have to maintain constantly, this is perfect. The setup is so simple that anyone can do it. The sound is great for a movies and listening to music. The one button source change, allows for the most novice of users to feel comfortable. So over all this was a great investment.

[...] the setup was relatively easy but the end result was well short of impressive. At [$]this Yamaha sound system is way overpriced. The four speakers in my two plus year old Sony 52" LCD XBR-6 produce equally good sound. If you toggle between the Yamaha and the Sony internals with your eyes closed you can't tell the difference. Definitely not worth the price.
