I have 2 Flip MinoHD camcorders that I always shoot video with- I wanted this to have the ability to shoot in 1080, and for the still photo mode/optical zoom. I also liked the idea of a removable battery/memory card (allowing shooting video all day w/o recharging.
I was under the impression the 3x optical zoom would work in video as well as photo mode- it does not. In video mode the zoom is ONLY digital. The quality of the video is quite good for a pocket camcorder. Low light is poor- but you have to expect that from a device this size. The stabilization is decent, stereo mics are very good quality.
You can switch the video from 1080/30FPS, 720/60FPS, 720/30FPS and 640x480. I like having the ability to adjust the quality based on the subject I'm shooting- the lower the quality- the longer the run time.
Battery is good for 1-2 hours. I picked up a spare off a auction site for less than 5 bucks- we'll see how it works. I put a 16GB SD card in mine and it allows for up to 5 hours of shooting.
The camera mode is acceptable- but not great quality, way, way too many artifacts. Noisy images, slow focus, but it still allows you to grab a 10MP image if you have nothing else with you. Flash works well.
I wish the controls were backlight like the flips, but the larger screen and positive controls (not the touch sensitive style on the flip) are better for most use.
Overall I'm very pleased with the device for the price- it's my new "carry it with me all the time" HD camera.

The size and weight of the camera is acceptable. I expected more because it claims to be HD. I even viewed video on my 46" Samsung as another reviewer suggested. The video is just not clear. So many artifacts that it looks smudged like there are spots of vaseline on the lens. Stills and video alike. Panning across a building with cedar shake style siding does not do well with the straight lines as they jump and vibrate on screen.
The microphones are so sensitive that I had to stop breathing while shooting as my breathing sounds were picked up. Can't shoot for long like that. Perhaps if the mics were forward facing rather than facing the sides.
Also the sliding door opens too easily which is very distracting. What image stabilization? Camera shake was tough to control.
Know that my only experience with a video camera is with an older JVC miniDV which takes a far better video at non HD resolutions. I just wanted something small to fit in my pocket but now I don't think going small is worth the loss in video quality so I will be staying away from small cameras if they are all like this one.

GOOD THINGS: Memory Cards,Image Stabilation,Zoom,
True HD.
Not so good: Image Stabilation, Battery doesn't last long in HD mode. I am looking for a higher Milli Amp. Battery to replace the original I did a lot of research and Sanyo-PD2 in my opinion is the best out there right now. Took me lots of buying and returning to find this out

This is the second Toshiba VPC-PD2 that I have purchased. I liked the first one so much I bought a second. I have used this camera a number of times now for ENG style video reports, a music video and several interviews. The sound quality is excellent and the picture can't be beat. The 3x optical zoom lens is handy and the quality of the image under low light is excellent. I like the fact that I can pop the SD card in my Mac and start editing in Final Cut right away. It is a shame that this camera has been discontinued. If you can find one - buy it! You won't be disappointed.

This is a disabled person's dream. For the price of the Sanyo VPC-PD2, it's worth every cent, sure there are a lot of pocket camera's out there but the PD2 is one that offers high end features for a reasonable price. It offers 3x optical zoom, plus HD capabilty, 720p up to 1080p, stereo sound in recording and playback and can be used with right or left hand. I would recommend it to everyone.
The only thing that I found is that you need a computer to get the full users manual, it's on a PDF file courtesy of Adobe, other than that it's a winner in my book.
Thanks, Bill

I am still learning how to use my new camera. There are things I like about it. I am concerned that for some reason when I play back video on my computer it plays in slow motion with the audio at normal speed. I am also disappointed to realize that the feature that allows you to take repeated shots quickly in snapshot mode only works at the lowest resolution. The camera is very light weight and does not feel all that strong. Will not let my grandkids use it because I am not sure it can stand up to their use.
But, overall, for the price, I think I will be happy with it. Will know more after using it on my upcoming trip to Africa.

Comments about Sanyo VPC-PD2 Full HD 1080 Pocket Movie Dual Camera:
I primarily purchased this camera due to its audio quality. I am a professional camera operator, and this is in no way something I would use for work. But I attend many concerts and like to take some video while I'm there, and there's no way they'd let you in with pro gear.
Until now, I was taking HD video with my Canon point-n-shoot, but the sound is always distorted. I've found most the live concert videos shot non-professionally on youtube all have the same audio problems. However, after recently seeing some with good sound, I contacted that particular youtube poster and asked what camera he used, which is how I came across this Sanyo.
HDMI output for viewing directly to a TV, and records to SD card, will accept up to a 64GB SDXC Card, so you can shoot for a while. 2" LCD is nice, and 10 megapixel photos, so pretty decent stills, too.
Easy user interface, fits in the pocket, and takes good video. I'd like a better zoom (3x), but for the size and price, can't really beat it.
Charges with USB, but it didn't come with an Edison>USB connector, which could be a drawback, although I have other devices that I borrow chargers from so it doesn't affect me.

Got mine here for [$] This unit is a bargain. The video is gorgeous even in low light and the photos are very sharp. Controls are simple to figure out, I just wanted something to beat around with during my travels that I wouldn't be upset if I misplaced it. I got more than I expected; I'm so happy with the dual camera That I decided against purchasing more expensive style units. This is the only model of the bloggie style cameras that is not fix focus with digital zoom, the 3X optical zoom makes this unit outperform the others, and the stereo mic picks up sound really well.

This camera works great! Takes great videos! You can't beat it for the price. I think it's the only product I found that has a flash and the 3X optical zoom is awesome! This camera is a much better bargain than a lot of others on the market. Highly recommend. (It would be nice if the flash worked with the video function but, hey, you can't have everything.)

I usually use and own a DSLR nikon D90, I bought this for for a handy pocket camera. so I don't have to bring my DSLR everywhere I go like; restaurant, travel, casino and so on. the video camera is poor it comes to low light. but the image stabilization is pretty good. taking pictures as you expected for a point and shoot camera. you get what you paid for on this brand and price. if you want a HD point and shoot camera with a very good picture & video camera, this aint the one.

The camera is very compact and has a good feel to it. Love that optical zoom, replaceable Li-Ion battery, and SDHC memory card capable. Carry an extra battery and SD card and your'e ready for an all day of shooting. The 10 Megapixel images are good to print at 8x10. Video quality is very good when shooting outdoor with daylight, sound is good but will record motor noise when zooming.
The cover on the battery compartment kept comming loose and opened while shooting. A small bend with a long nose plier on the latch of the cover fixed the problem.

I used the camera at the Sydney Motor Show Oct 2010. It performed very well.
Colour reproduction is great. The image stabiliser helps to get smooth panning shots and 3x optical zoom for composition. Close focus is amazing,
down to 3 inches! Great for flower photos and video. The only drawbacks I found were that there is no constant focus while using video, focus is set when you start a clip, and also there is some picture shake when zooming while filming. These are only minor problems and I would definitely recommend buying the camera.

ok first off fits in a shirt pocket and its very light.very nice finish it not a flat black its almost like a silver flake in black very nice finger prints dont show up very well love the fact it has a lens cover optical zoom is great very clear but when it gose from optical to digital there is a jump and it shows in the video video is very clear and same with photos very very clear you cant go wrong for the money the zoom factor is not a big deal if you use the old rule of thumb no zoom unless you have to the close you are to the object the better your picture and video will be and having wide angel makes it so much better the other pocket cameras if you know what i mean all in all you cant go wrong click buy you wont be sorry
