LaCie 1TB Rugged Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive
The 1TB Rugged Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive from LaCie allows you to take your data on the road and off-road. It features a durable, rubberized bumper and scratch-proof exterior. Built to military specifications, you can be sure that the drive is protected from damage that can occur during daily use.
The drive connects to your computer via USB 2.0, FireWire-400, or FireWire-800. Backup software for Mac and Windows is included, as well as 1 year of access to LaCie's online service.

This is definitely one of the best external hard drives I've ever bought and I've bought a lot. I've been using this to sync my Snow Leopard Server data files with ChronoSync when I need to hit the road but want to maintain my server file structure. The snappy FireWire 800 interface is more than enough for quick file transfers and it feels just as fast as my server transfer times.
I love that I can throw it into my backpack with confidence knowing that the drive will be able to take a bit of a beating when transported constantly. It's not the end all of protection but it's enough for most situations. Not only does it provide protection but I think it looks great. This drive has a lot of charm with it's soft rubber edges and it's smooth metal enclosure.
The drive is expensive but in my opinion worth it for the extra interfaces and it's rugged exterior. Wish they threw in some extra color cases for the price you pay.

I'm a designer, I work on the go on a laptop, and need a high-volume small drive to keep large projects on. I work "live" on the drive.
However I only purchased this drive because Western Digital has not yet introduced a 1TB version of its "My Passport Studio" drive.
When I'm working on this LaCie 1TB Rugged Drive, it is noticeably slower than the WD drive was, even though there is tons more free disk space. According to specs, the drives should work at the same speed. Not so.
I love the "rugged" aspect of this product. That's the best bit though. Otherwise not so impressed.

I do video and use a lot of storage space. I have a couple of these guys and I love them. Super durable, fast, small and don't require power unless you are piggy backing two together. As soon as one starts to fill up I order another to keep my video library organized. Worth the money.

I've used LaCie drives for over 10 years. They have always been reliable and durable. I use them for still image files and lately for video files. The Rugged's are great because they are portable and lightweight. They pack easily and fir nicely in my camera or computer bag. I have several 500GB Rugged drives and now I just upgraded to 1TB. It's a little heavier than the 500GB version but fractionally. The triple interface is nice especially if you daisy-chain which I often do.
They seem to handle being used/plugged in for 3-5 hours at a time without problems. They get warm but this doesn't seem to be a problem. They are quiet as well.
I've yet to find anything that I really don't like about these drives. Overall, a great portable solution.

I love these drives. I have about five of these in various sizes, but this is my first 1TB drive. I schlep these drives around in my backpack everywhere I go and have no worries. The, what seems to be, more hefty Firewire 800 cable is a great addition to this set. LaCie got it right with this one. However, like with most bus-powered external hard drives, it runs pretty hot with prolonged activity. Don't work off it.

Firewire-800 interface is marvelously fast. But when first connected, the drive displayed only a non-functional set-up assistant (the version meant for non-Intel Macs). To solve the problem, I used disk doctor to erase the offending partition and to mount the 1-TB disk. That worked rapidly and with no problem.

I use this product on photo shoots about 12 hours a day and about 150 to 170 days a year. I have around 10 of the 1TB drives and around 20 of the 500GB drives and have not had a problem with any of them, also I have owned some of them for more than 2 years and they still work as good as the day I got them. I did have one that gave me a problem but it was because it was dropped and has a huge dent in the casing and the 800 port doesn't work but it still works fine on the 400 and USB ports.
