While the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens from Nikon is designed primarily for use with FX-format D-SLR cameras, it's equally at home on any DX-format D-SLR camera. As a standard 5.0x zoom on an FX-format camera body, it's perfect for landscapes, portraits, and weddings - it's an excellent choice for a perfect take-along-everywhere lens. On a DX-format camera, the focal length gets a 1.5x bump that turns it into a formidable longer-range optic with enough wide angle for all but the widest of shots.
The AF-S 24-120 ED VR is a versatile imaging tool with a constant maximum aperture of f/4.0 - this enables photographers to maintain exposure settings throughout the entire zoom range. For those critical focusing-moments - the M/A focus mode switch allows the shooter to quickly change between manual and autofocus modes.
Nikon's optical engineers have graced the lens elements with their proprietary Super Integrated Coating- a superior multicoating process that enhances light transmission for maximum clarity, crispness, and contrast. Additionally this NIKKOR offering also benefits from Nikon's very own Nano Crystal Coat - a high-tech lens treatment that ensures maximum imaging quality by limiting or eliminating the negative effects from ghosting, flare, and glare.
Low-light shooters will greatly appreciate the benefits from the addition of Nikon's VR II image stabilization system. This amazing internal virtual-tripod allows photographers to work with shutter-speeds up to 4x slower than usual - whether it's a candle-lit snap-shot or a moody portrait taken in a dark alley-way under a dingy street-lamp - hand-held photographers can rely on the AF-S 24-120 ED VR for sharp, clear, and extremely well-detailed imaging.

Before ordering the Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f:4 G ED VR N lens, I did my usual research: I read all the reviews on the B&H website and also checked its MTF graph on the [@]. I also checked the MTF graphs of comparable lenses on both the [@]. In addition, I studied the report on an in-depth trial of this lens on the [@].Many reviews of this lens strongly criticise its distortion and vignetting. The Mansurov test, while showing some distortion (barrel distortion at 24mm and pincushion from 28 to 120mm) and vignetting on FX sensors, indicated that this was not a particular problem with general photography. My own comparison with tests of similar lenses and study of the relevant MTF graphs led me to believe that the performance of the Nikkor 24-120 ought to be little different from that of other lenses with a similar zoom ratio. Besides, the MTF graphs clearly showed that the fall-off in performance only became significant beyond 15mm from the picture centre. In other words, vignetting should not be a problem on DX sensors.I also ran a test series with my Sigma DG 28-70mm f:2.8 EX lens and got very slight pincushion distortion throughout its range – a fact which I had never noticed before, even though I have used it extensively for three years. It is one of the best lenses I have ever owned, giving excellent sharpness, contrast and colour rendition and no vignetting over its full zoom range.I cannot understand why the new Nikkor 24-120 lens has attracted so much adverse criticism, while other lenses with similar characteristics are accepted without a murmur. As my cameras all have DX sensors (2xD90s, 1xD300S) I got to thinking that I might find the performance of the Nikkor 24-120 quite acceptable. And because the zoom range is particularly suitable for everyday carry, I decided to give it a try.I received my copy from B&H on 17th January, 2011, and immediately ran some tests for distortion and vignetting on all three cameras. As I expected, distortion was minimal and vignetting absent. Unlike the Mansurov test, my test showed slight pincushion distortion all the way from 24 to 120mm. It could only be noticed on straight vertical or horizontal lines, placed close to the edges of the photograph, and even so, one had to look for it.All such things are relative and in the eye of the beholder: what I consider to be slight distortion, might give a photographer of architecture the cold shivers. But then, this lens is not meant for architectural photography. The PC Nikkors are designed for that. Neither is it a macro lens. After the distortion tests, I ran a series of tests of the Nikon GP-1 GPS unit, which I had received together with the lens (see separate review) taking hundreds of photographs to establish the accuracy/repeatability of the GPS readings. All these photographs showed excellent sharpness, contrast and colour rendition at all focal lengths and apertures, even wide open – and many of these photos were taken in very poor light. In fact, these test pictures were indistinguishable from similar ones taken with my Sigma 28-70mm f:2.8 – and I love that Sigma. It is as good as they come! The 24-120 lens is very solidly constructed, focussing, even in low-light conditions, is quick and accurate, all controls are handy, smooth and easy to work with, and the VR system works perfectly.Incidentally, one of the B&H reviewers stated that his lens was made in China, citing that as a minus point. My lens was made in Thailand, as were all my camera bodies. I frankly doubt that Nikon has a plant in China, producing the same lens.Would I buy another copy? Heck, yes! I can highly recommend this lens!

I had pre-ordered this lens and had anxiously awaited it for over a month to make life easier for me when shooting a wedding. It was to replace my Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 so that I wouldn't have to switch to my 70-200mm f2.8 VR as often in certain situations. After using the new lens exclusively with the D700 on a wedding, I was appalled when I processed the images on my computer. Every one except for the most extreme telephoto focal lengths caved in at the middle area of all four sides, even when I crouched down to take a photo at a direct angle to the subject. I had to adjust each image 8 points in the Adobe Lightroom 3 parallax distortion function to make it look normal. Other than that, it focused as well as the 24-70 f2.8 and the optics seemed acceptable. Hopefully I just got a defective unit because I can't believe Nikon would knowingly put out a product like this. As usual, B&H's return process was hassle free and I was treated with respect. I'm going to e-mail a sampling of the images to Nikon to get their reaction.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
Bought this lens to take on a trip to the grand canyon cause my old 35-70 lens died. Found this lens was good for 90% of the shots I was taking, also worked quite good for video. Focus is fast.
I took out a wider field for some of the shots that needed a bit more. Think if there existed a lens that can do 14- 70 with stabilization would be more appropriate for the canyon.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
The Nikon 24-120mm f/4 lens has proven to be an excellent and versatile lens for FX or even DX cameras. It is not far from the sharpness of the more expensive 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, especially when used at f/5.6 or f/8. It makes a good "walk about" lens, expecially if one needs just one lens for travel for example. I like the quick change between manual and auto focus operation. Having a nice bokeh, it is a great portrait lens. Recommended.

A fine lens to be the one you always carry when traveling about. Not too light but it does eliminate one or more other lenses.
It seems sharp and acurate in it's color rendition.
Only a bit expensive and heavy, otherwise a winner.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
As part of an eventual conversion to the FX platform I've been buying FX lenses. They are being used on a DX body, the Nikon D7000. This lens is better than I expected. The auto focus is very fast, the colors really do pop, and the flexibility brought by this particular focal range is fantastic.
While this lens does not get you 2.8 low light shooting, the VRII works wonders. I shot in sunset light on the beach and easily got 3 to 4 fstops of stability. In fact during the 4 day trip to the beach I only took this lens off once.
The sunsets shot with this lens are among the best taken, some of that is better technique, I know, but some of it is this wonderful lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
After extensive research on the best lens to travel with I settled on the 24-120 f4 and I am glad I did. I fully understand that it may not have a lens IQ to match primes in the same range but it is quite good. And if you post process with a decent program (I use Photoshop CS5)you can remove the modeest distortion and sharpen to your hearts content.
And with a constant apperture at f4 throughout the range, you are about a stop faster than the longer Nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 by the time you zoom to about 85mm. And if your lighting conditions require it, with a camera like the D700 that I use, pushing the ISO to 1600 or 2200 is easy with only modest compromise in quality.
So it's not f2.8, but it is VR and it is relatively compact and 80% of the time you don't need to worry about changing lenses while on the go. And for the other 20% of the time, zoom with your feet. At the wide end, you may find you want to also carry either a prime like the expensive but great Nikon 24mm f1.4 or great value 20mm f2.8 or a zoom like the 16-35mm f4 VR from Nikon (or 14-24mm f2.8).
Very few of us will have our photos "rejected" because we used this lens as opposed to a high quality prime. In fact most of the time, it will be absolutely immpossible to tell the difference.

For hd movies out of my camera. VR is essential with doing movies or its too much shaking. the Wave S motor doesn't get picked up by the microphone as the older standard Af's.

I just returned from Peru and carried this lens every day and I never felt like I needed anything more. I considered getting the 28-300mm but the additional weight was just not worth it to me and I never felt like I was missing anything with the 24-120mm. My photos are crisp and the zoom was fast.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
I have owned this lens for a year now and only have one complaint. Lens creep. Of course that doesn't affect photos. I also own the trinity and both DX and FX bodies. I have used this on both and the color, contrast, detail, and speed are great considering the focal range and cost. I now leave this lens on my D700 as an all around lens and use the 2.8s on my D4. The addition of VR is nice and does help with low light shooting. If you use good shooting techniques this lens is as sharp as any other and will only disappoint the pixel peepers. I have fooled a few of those with a few photos though. I give it a 5 star rating because it is what it is and won't break the bank compared to several 2.8s. If you can't afford several lenses then this is a great work around.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
When I ordered a D800E to replace my D200, I wanted a walk-around lens that would fill an FX sensor. I already have the fast zooms: 17-35 f/2.58, 28-70 f/2.8 and the 80-200 f/2.8, but these are 2.5:1 zoom ratios at best. If I'm shooting "serious" landscape, I'll use one of these, but for event shoots, I just didn't want to be changing lenses all the time, especially when utmost quality wasn't the primary concern. This 24-120 fills the bill. It's sharp enough to take excellent shots, the focus is reasonably quick, and the VR is handy in marginal light. The build quality is good and it takes all my 77mm filters. I've only tested it empirically on a DX sensor, and it's sharp to the corners at all apertures. Chromatic aberration is minimal and Lightroom 4 takes care of that handily. I could give this five stars without guilt, but it's not quite as clean as my fast glass, and it would be unreasonable to expect it to be. Fill my needs perfectly. Price is high, but so is the quality.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
I bought this lens to flesh out my FX collection in preparation for a D800 (now using a D300). I also have the 85/1.4 and 70-200/2.8, 200-400/4, this was to become a "walking around" lens for the D800. I use the 18-200 as such on the D300.
The lens was well constructed, good size, handled well, focused fast and accurately, and the VR was quite effective.
However, in doing tests it was a bit soft. I expected it to be soft compared (for example) to the 70-200, but I found it was actually not that much better than the 18-200. Better perhaps, a bit more contrast, but dead center with both wide open (admittedly this one a bit faster) I could not tell the difference on D300 images (shot from a locked down tripod, mirror up, after focus fine tune).
It was sharper at the edge than the 18-200, and is a nicer lens. However the reason for the D800 for me is to make use of all those pixels.
If I didn't have the 18-200 I would have kept the 24-120, but since I did, and since in crop mode the D800 is going to have plenty of pixels to match this lens' sharpness (I mostly shoot wide open), I decided to return it and wait for a better FX alternative.
So I bought a 14-24 at the very wide end (which is plenty sharp) and am waiting for a sharper medium lens, like a 24-70/2.8 with VR perhaps. Or if I get tired of waiting will just get the 24-70/2.8, but I really wanted VR.
