I produce independent television and short films utilizing DVX100b and HVX200a cameras. I decided to move into DSLR video production specifically due to this camera. I've shot still photography for years on Nikon with beautiful results. With this camera I can now get those looks on video without buying overly expensive 35mm adapters for video cameras. I've seen a lot of complaints elsewhere about the "jello effect" this camera supposedly has. I don't see any more than you'd get on normal CMOS censors as long as you aren't a moron and know how to operate video/film cameras. I've gotten bit rates up to 21mbps, which for some people is too low, but if you're like me and shooting with HDTV or the web in mind I think it's an appropriate bit rate. You ARE able to use manual controls for shooting, you just have to lock them with the AE-Lock button before you move into live view. All exposure functions (ISO, F-stop, Shutter, White balance) can be locked giving you for all extents and purposes full manual control in video mode. Manual focus and Exposure compensation are available to tweak while recording. Subject Tracking AF is useful for tracking and steadicam shots, but outside of that I wouldn't really consider using automatic features. It doesn't have microphone inputs, but I record to a separate audio recorder anyways. I've also done some quick chromakey tests with it and pulled decent keys without much work.
With Nikon's 35mm F1.8 DX prime lens this camera is capable of some really stunning cinematic HD video. Against Canon cameras in a similar price range the D3100 appeared much more cinematic in quality, whereas the Canon had more of a video look to me. Of course if you can afford it the D7000 would be even better, but if you're like me and can't justify paying more than double the price of this camera than the D3100 is right for you.

Pros: Clean pictures, Big Viewfinder, Good Value

Other than the complaints listed above, this is a good entry level camera. I guess I was just hoping for more. I dont like buying a camera that is stripped down this much only to lower the price. The video is pretty much useless with AF. There is so much noise from it, it shouldnt even be advertised it is so bad. Plus the Live View doesnt work properly. Canons live view changes when you change the camera settings like Aperture or shutter speed. This camera does not, you have to turn off live view, then turn it back on to see your changes, which is running up acuations on the camera as well. I am most disappointed that there is no IR for a remote. Most of Nikons previous entry cameras had this feature. It is a disappointment that they removed this. And the face tracking AF is only available in certain modes for some reason.
I have a G10 that is more impressive than this camera.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
This is camera #3 from B and H photo in the last year!
I've had this camera for 6 months and enjoyed every minute of it. My last Nikon camera was an AF 8008 in 1989. I've been taking pictures since 1978. I got rid of film Nikon because it weighed too much and bought various point and shoot cameras since 1994. I have owned one of everything over the last 33 years and consider the d3100 the best camera I've owned and worth the wait. I passed on the mirror less camera system because most did not have view finders and those that did did not offer a 55-300 lens.
I use a wheelchair and the camera the extra lens and the Nikon Bag do not upset my balance which is why I bought it. I went digital in 2006 and haven't looked back. The DVD that came with the #3793 bag was very useful. I bought the 55-300 lens which I thought was a vast improvement over the 55-200 and well worth the money. If you need the advanced features I would buy the D5100. I looked at the D 5000 which was offered at the time and decided to buy the D 3100. For most people who are not professional this camera will do just fine.

Great camera for a "commoner" who is looking to take great pictures and mess around with basic photography. I bought this for my husband for his birthday, but we have both had a great time figuring out how to take great pictures!

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
Very good product. I already had a nikon DSLR, but I really liked that this one had 1080p HD recording capabilities. I even compared some pictures from this with my D40, and I noticed that they came out clearer and cleaner.
One thing I did not know when I purchased this camera is that if you want to record something it has to be done in live view. I was hoping to be able to look through the viewfinder, but its definently not a deal breaker.
The HD quality is outstanding. A lot of people have posted tests on youtube with different lenses if you are interested in seeing what the quality looks like.
I use manual mode for almost everything, so I can't give you a review on the 'guide' mode or auto mode. I assume it works as advertised.
The camera seems very sturdy and I don't worry too much about scratching it or bumping it lightly.
Live view is a nice feature, but I don't use it for anything other than recording. You can take pictures with it, but I wouldn't reccomend it. It is a bit slower and in my oppinion the view finder is a better option.
Very pleased with the D3100.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
This is my first attempt at using a SLR camera - I've been exclusively point & shoot up until now. I decided on this camera based on reviews, and the fact that I have had several Nikon cameras in the past, and always been happy with them.
After a few weeks of playing around with it, I am very pleased with my purchase! I have never considered myself much of a photographer, but after watching the Nikon School DVD (it was packaged with the camera bag I purchased) I have learned so much. Not only how to use the camera, but photo composition and other tips and techniques. I must say, I am actually proud of the pictures I am taking! I have not yet ventured into the manual modes, but am hoping to get there soon.
I purchased the camera bundled with the 55-200 extra lens, and I would highly recommend that combo.
I love this camera and would highly recommend it to anyone as a first step into SLR photography. It makes for an easy transition, and I son't see myself outgrowing this camera any time soon!
I would also highly recommend buying form B&H Photo. Their price beat anything I could find locally, and my camera arrived in just a few days.

I am a longtime user of film SLR's but this is my 1st purchase of a DSLR. My complaint with digital cameras in general is the complexity of the user interface - too many buttona and options. I had borrowed my son's D40 for a trip this July and so found basic controls not too difficult. I've shot mostly stills - I admit to some problems mastering the video capability. Compared to the D40 I like the far higher resolution as it has given me more options for cropping.

I bought this camera for my son who is in the US Air Force and stationed overseas. I was impressed with the quality of the D3100 for the price. I have 2 other Nikon Digital SLR's so I've grown to expect a great product. I wanted to make sure everything was in order before sending it to my son so I opened the box, charged the battery, went through the set-up and started taking pictures. Nikon makes picture taking easy.

Since AI had a large number of Nikon lenses it was a no brainer to pick up this camera. I feel that Nikon has done a good job of closing the gap with Canon as far as features and performance. The camera is a great value for the money.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
I bought this camera as a gift for my wife. Honestly, I need to get my own because I can't keep my hands off of it. It is more than a step above the point-and-shoot cameras...it's miles above. The quality of pictures and the ease of use is amazing. I have experience with SLR film cameras but my wife does not. It is advanced enough for me to play with aperature, ISO, shutter speed, and flash settings, but easy enough for her to put on Auto and take perfect pictures. It's amazing how fast it is also. Set it on sports mode and continuous shooting and take as many pictures as you want of the kids playing fast paced sports...something the old point-and-shoot could never do. We spent more time swearing at the old camera than taking pictures. This camera is versatile and inexpensive (relatively). A great gift for anyone who enjoys photography.

I use this camera for personal use, & it does just the trick! The manual that comes with it & the guide mode are really helpful for a newbie like me. So far, there is nothing that I don't like about it. The best thing about it is that they have so many different modes, which definitely train you in how to mess with aperture & shutter speed.

The Nikon D3100 has been a pleasure for both my wife and I to use. It takes clear, bright photos and is quick to capture the moment without the delay of some other cameras. The clarity of the pictures has been amazing for being able to capture our kids playing with our fast moving puppy! My brother In Law had this exact camera with a larger lens as well on our most recent vacation and the images we captured were timeless. It was an easy purchase and money well spent. We ended up buying the exact same set-up larger lens as well!! Lastly, the camera is easy to use but yet has some advanced features for more in-depth use when we are ready to explore.

DX-Nikkor lenses are engineered and optimized for use on Nikon DX-format D-SLRs and are designed to cover the smaller image area of the DX sensor. When a DX lens is mounted on an FX-format Nikon D-SLR, the camera's DX-Crop Mode is automatically engaged, introducing a 1.5x magnification (cropping) factor.
