The Marshall 5" On-Camera Monitor is a high performance color monitor that mounts to the top of a camcorder or video DSLR using the provided shoe mount adapter. The monitor delivers superior brightness and sharpness, supports a wide range of formats and markers, and offers versatile viewing angles. Major monitor controls such as brightness, contrast, and color are easily accessed from the monitor's front panel. There are also four preset keys so that the videographer can, at the touch of a button, instantly access often used functions.
To help the videographer maintain optimum image quality through various lighting and scene scenarios, this monitor offers a number of test tools including False Color Filter and Peaking Filter functions.
False Color Filter is used to maintain a natural look for people and objects when there's a change in a camera's brightness and luminance levels. Peaking Filter employs a color to black and white changeover method to help ascertain what areas of the image are lacking in focus or sharpness. With these tools at hand the videographer can shoot with greater confidence, knowing that what is shown on the screen is an accurate representation of what is being recorded or broadcasted.
This monitor operates off of the included power adapter or via battery power (4 AA) for field operation. With this level of performance and versatility, this monitor offers the perfect alternative to the often inadequate viewfinder and flip-out screens found on many of today's cameras.

I use this monitor with my Canon 7D and it works just like a Marshall should. Before purchasing this one, I tried out the 7 inch monitor and it's a great monitor, but added way too much weight to the rig. The 5 inch makes a perfect AC monitor. The first shoot I used it on, I used the recommended Sanyo Eneloop rechargeables and it's not the best of solutions, but it works for a good couple hours. However, as long as you get some external battery, like the Switronix power base, you'll be fine. Overall, this monitors features are great and I would recommend it to anyone who does HDSLR work.

I really wanted to like this monitor but have been somewhat disappointed.
It does work and is supremely useful for awkward angles - neck saving in cases. But has several design flaws that it really shouldn't have.
The awful placement and style of the power switch I was aware of before purchase - thanks to other reviews. There are ways to work around this and I can live with it.
My big gripe though is the peaking facility - one of the main reasons I ordered the monitor in the first place, to work with our 7D - to help with manual focus. I wasn't expecting perfection but you can't rely on the peaking at all - items out of focus by several metres are still highlighted as in focus.
As a feature, it is simply useless.
Lacking zebra stripes or live histogram in filming modes (7D), the false color is useful and works well.
It is a useful addition to a camera such as the 7D - mainly for ease of viewing when the camera is mounted at difficult angles.
But for the money I expected something much better and well thought out.
If it cost $250 then I'd have figured it as a reasonable compromise.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
I used this monitor (as a rental) to try it out on our last music video shoot (outdoors in a remote location). Obviously no AC power so had to rely on battery power. Had to get the AD to run back into town twice for more batteries! The rental house said we would get two hours from each set. Maybe with it's use as a photo-monitor were it turns off for a few minutes. But with video and being on all the time we were lucky to get twenty minutes. Granted it was cold outside, and temperature plays an important part of any battery life. Something to consider though.
Nice picture quality, but not the best. Poor contrast-ratio for outdoors even with a hood. Acceptable for in-doors though. Same issues as stated with power switch (Are you listening to the users Marshall?) Good quality build.
Would I personally buy? Probably not. If they had other options for battery mounts, maybe yes. For the price and semi-pro user, not a bad choice, maybe use a heaping supply of rechargeable. or fabricate a battery belt pack for field use with a voltage converter (have to convert to AC input or something to fit monitor)
And lastly, adding SDI (I know you can get it in other monitors) with loop-thru would be a big PLUS PLUS.

False color feature is awesome. Lightweight and mobile. Perfect for an on-board monitor option.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
Let me get the positives out of the way first, because there are only a couple: The picture is nice (not awesome), and the false color/peaking filters are great. As for the negatives: When using with a DSLR, the scaling from the camera creates what is essentially the same sized viewing window as the LCD screen on the back of the DSLR.The on/off switch on the back is horribly designed. Everytime is put this monitor in a case the on/off switch is activated, draining the batteries. Now I have to take the batteries out everytime I put it in a case. The battery plate is cheap as well. I broke off a metal piece the second day. There is no indicator (as far as I know) of low battery either. It will just die with no warning.Like I said, this monitor is way overpriced. I wouldn't mind paying $200 for this, but [$] is ridiculous.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
My shots are better exposed and focused since buying this monitor. Great image quality, but annoying since the monitor easily gets switched on and runs down the batteries due to the awkwardly sticking out power switch.
I sometimes have to switch liveview on, off and on again to get a signal from my Nikon D7000... otherwise I would gladly give this monitor 5 stars if the power switch was designed better.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
I've found this monitor to be useful and pretty cost-effective with a 7D video set-up. I won't be raving about it necessarily but it does boast a good, reliable picture when you're in a pinch. Close focussing makes me nervous still - in shallow DOF situations I may rely on the Zacuto Z-finder. But this often does the job and does it well.
I agree with many of the complaints about this monitor - the power button is silly. But I tend not to travel with batteries in the device, so this is not such a huge problem for me.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
I use this product for independent film. The product has the benefit of being small and light weight I attach it to a redrock shoulder mount with a spud and arm.
The screen can be a little small, but is better than the generic 350 dollar monitor using a lpe6 battery however it does eat batteries as others have said. I found this frustrating.
It is not the perfect solution, but the exposure and false color peaking is good, I found it saves some of my poor exposures and really helps with not blowing something out when you are trying to get the 10 stop contrast range inherent in the 7d or 5d.
Needs a sun hood, must have.
I wish this monitor accepted LPE6 batteries. If it did, I would give it 5/5 stars.
There is an annoying phenomena with my 7d that has to have the monitor sync with the product which requires that you turn the camera on, get a signal, then plug in the mini hdmi to the camera and then the larger hdmi to the monitor and they sync. But I believe if you change the battery you might have to redo this process. Regardless it gave me serious headaches when on set. So play with it before you get it out there as with any gear.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
It is a bit more expensive than some other brands, but you actually get a Marshall monitor, and not a cheap asian display with a sticker.
It has many pro functions (peaking, false color...), but it works well and is clear and crisp for those DSLR around
On the other hand it could use a power switch that isn't on the back, use a little less battery (approx. 2h with good rechargeables), or have a less tricky side hdmi socket (image goes on/off sometimes when you move the cable)
Bottom line is I use it quite a lot, because when you're used to external monitor you don't go back to the on-camera display

I use this with my 5D. It has a nice picture quality for an LCD monitor. Seems to be pretty durable too.
It would be nice if the AA batteries it uses lasted a little longer, but it seems to use a lot of power.
Still a good buy though.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
This monitor is excellent.. however it is just too small when working with the 5DM2 or other DSLR's that compromise the output size. This monitor also didn't have a DSLR ratio, if it did it would be much better for the 5D. The picture quality, function buttons and other features (like false color/peaking etc) are fantastic and on par with Marshall's more expensive offerings. The weight is super light and perfect for DSLR work. Also there is no usb for firmware upgrades. If Marshall fixed the firmware for DSLR's it would be a 5 star review.
Also it would be nice, and should be standard on a monitor this size, to have HDMI out. That way I could have this on top of my camera and a larger monitor on a Steadicam etc.

I use it to shot video with Canon 7d. Excellent thing, but the reason why I removed one star - is stupid location of on/off switch - it always turning on in my backpack and blowing batteries. I decided to remove one battery when the monitor is not in use.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
Perched precariously on top of the hot shoe, the monitor is about the same size as the camera itself (5DII) so doesn't look totally out of place as a 7" one would. I was concerned that the mount might not be strong enough, and could see the hot shoe being damaged in a fall, so would look in the longer term for an alternate way of mounting.
You need a short HDMI cable otherwise you risk catching the cable on everything you go near, and it would have been good for Marshall to include one, especially with a 90 degree plug to keep the cable from protruding out so much.
Reasonable battery life from AAs but would be good if they sold adapters to use common DSLR type batteries as they would last a lot longer, and be easier to carry.
The additional buttons on the front allow customised functions to turn on and off easily, and with the ability to zoom to the pixel level and peaking filter, but there is a short pause when moving from one mode to another – perhaps they could have used a faster processor? A number of competing products have the same functions, but hide them in menus which make then harder to access on the fly.
Overall very happy with the monitor, it certainly make video a lot easier.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
This is a terrific Piece of equipment for any indie film maker we use it with a 5d mark II for pulling focus the only downside is the output of the 5d because it sends out a signal of 480p when the record button is hit. This will occur with any monitor on the 5d mark II due to it's output signal. Hopefully when the 5D Mark III comes out this issue would be resolved as it is on the 7D and other canon DSLR cameras.
I would recommend this product for other filmmakers if you are looking for a system with video village you should purchase the 7 inch professional system which i would intend on in the future to purchase my self.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:
I am a professional shooter using mostly DSLR cameras. I use the Marshall 5" monitor for composition and focusing. It has built-in functions to improve focusing and setting exposure. These functions can be accessed through menus or assigned to 1 of 4 function buttons on the front. This monitor makes focusing very easy with the 5D MkII and the image from the camera is very good, much better than I expected. I had some trouble with the monitor causing the record function to shut off after about 6 seconds, but it was an improper setting on the 5D that caused the problem and not the monitor itself. Make sure you use rechargable batteries for best performance.
