The new W3 is solidly built and has a very comfortable feel in the hands, not slick or slippery. The camera is easy to carry and the included wrist strap adds a degree of security. The lens cover/power switch has a positive snap that leaves no doubt as to whether it is off or on. A ridge on the lens cover makes it easy to keep one's fingers out of the lenses.

The 3x (35mm - 105mm) zoom control ring surrounds the shutter release button. Like most zoom controls it is difficult to zoom slowly enough for accurate composition. Rather than trying to get a continuous zoom, it appears to be better to use an intermittent approach - quickly press the zoom control, hear the beep, let go of the control and the zoom moves one step in or out.

There is a parallax control on the top of the camera on the left side. This can be quite useful when the point of parallax is different from the point of focus/exposure. When pressed, the control causes the display to show both images simultaneously and adjustments can be made in fine increments. It can also be used in the Playback mode to adjust parallax before printing. Lenticular prints can be ordered online.

It is difficult to keep finger grease off of the 3-inch screen in normal handling, carrying, sliding into/out of a case, etc. This screen is incredible and gives the camera a huge "Wow!!" factor. It is a very high resolution - 1 million plus pixels - lenticular screen with virtually invisible lenses. This is not your father's "Winkie!" Fortunately, the grease has no impact on the imagery.

The battery/SD card cover is a fairly complicated plastic and metal affair that will get a great deal of use. Its operation is somewhat misleading as there are four raised dots on the front edge, however, they do not provide enough grip to actually open the door. The best way is to simply put one's thumb smack in the middle of the label and slide the door open. This will happen often because the battery will require frequent changing.

To become more familiar with the camera, I put it in its "fully-automatic everything" mode and played 3D tourist at the American Museum of Natural History. :-) Although the camera has a great deal of flexibility, I thought that the majority of users would just shoot in this mode most of the time and I wanted to see how it would perform.

Starting with a fully charged battery and a freshly formatted 4-GB SDHC card, I was able to take 156 pictures using the dual *.mpo/*.jpg mode - in other words, 78 discreet images. I shot a mix of bright exteriors on the walk over, and both available light and flash in the museum. I kept the camera turned off most of the time. Afterwards I reviewed the pictures with a friend.

This was enough to completely drain the battery which then took 2.5 hours to recharge.

The controls on the rear of the camera are similar to many P&S digital cameras but with the addition of a 2D/3D button and a Movie button. The Shutter Release button is used for both stills and movies. The selected mode is displayed on the screen.

The Disp/Back button steps the screen display through Information on, off, and a very useful "rule of thirds" grid display. This is invaluable for keeping the lenses horizontal.

The Playback button > can be used to turn the camera on and off without having to open the front lens cover. The Menu rocker switch is used to move through the images, and the Zoom Control can then be used to magnify them.

A Mode Selection dial provides access to Fully Auto, Program, Manual, Aperture Priority, two Scene Modes (that are assigned in the Menu) and two Advanced Modes.

The A(dvanced)3D position allows two images to be taken by the left lens, á la Cha-Cha, for situations where the normal 75mm baseline is too much or too little. After taking the first shot, it is displayed on the screen in an onionskin mode, partly transparent, so that the second shot can be aligned with it. These two images are then combined in the normal *.mpo format to yield a stereo image. This provides some interesting new macro capabilities.

The A(dvanced)2D position allows you to take two different images simultaneously, e.g., a wide shot and a close up or different color balances, etc. These images are just two individual *.jpgs.

Since there is no image stabilization, hand-holding at slower shutter speeds could be difficult.

Sensor noise appears to be very low, especially considering that, in the fully automatic mode, the lowest ISO is 400. I haven't yet explored the other manual settings which go down to ISO 100.

One problem I found is that the flash can create double shadows - one on either side of the subject - because it is in between the lenses. When possible, moving the subject away from the background will help.

The image quality is very good and the precise synchronization between the two image sensors adds substantially to that quality. Depth is quite apparent with no "cardboard cutout" effect.

I bought the Fujifilm W3 expecting that it might be an "almost, but not quite there" attempt at what I was looking for in a 3D camera. After one day on full auto, I'm totally impressed with its design, quality and capabilities. The rock-solid, cableless synchronization, HD video and amazingly clear 3D screen solve many of the difficulties I've dealt with previously. The fact that it has a multitude of other modes and features adds substantially to its value for my needs. No camera is perfect for everyone, but the W3 is a solid 2nd gen 3D contender and, for me at least, a keeper.

Yes its 3D and you do not need glasses.Images look clear and colorful and its easy to handle. The only problem is there is not any software that you can share your pictures. Therefore you can only view them on your camera or on a 3d television.Fuji has not any solutions yet, besides the 3d viewer which costs as much as the camera. So how do you get your loved ones to view your work?

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

I've used Stereo cameras for over 30 years; Realist, FED, Kodak Stereo, Nimslo, and a medium format Sputnik. This is my first digital stereo, and so far I like it a lot. I print stereocards. The software is pretty basic and easy to use.
I am still learning the features of the Fuji, but so far it surpasses my expectations. I have spent more on stereo cameras that deliver less.

I HAVE USED THIS CAMERA TO DO STILLS AND VIDEO OF MY DAUGHTER LEARNING TO SURF. IT'S GREAT THAT YOU CAN SWITCH BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN 2D AND 3D SO EASY. THE ONE THING THAT IS A PROBLEM FOR ME IS THE PROGRAM MODE FOR THE DIFFERENT SETTINGS CAN GET TURNED EASILY AND I HAVE TO FORCE MYSELF TO REMEMBER TO CHECK IT EACH TIME I TURN ON THE CAMERA TO MAKE SURE IT IS IN THE P SETTING OTHERWISE THE PICTURE MAY NOT TURN OUT. OTHER THAN THAT IT IS AMAZING

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

This is a very intriguing and addictive item. Best enjoyed by gadget freaks, bored nerds, video addicts, or anyone with a 3d tv who wants to make home movies for it.
This is not the only camera I would pack on vacation. As a still camera, it's just too noisy and insensitive and can't compete with a DSLR. Its image sharpness is plenty good for 720p 3d video, however.
Like the GoPro Hero, the Fuji W3 has a place and a role in my bag of tricks for spicing up video and photo. Use only outdoors or in well-lit interiors and use the flash most of the time.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

I love this camera.

pros:
-heavier than my s95
-lens are close to eye distance. i looked into the 3D camcorders and seem to be closer to each other. but for this price, it's a good lens design.
-accepts large sd cards
-lcd screen looks like the future tv's well have someday where no more 3D glasses are needed
-TWO ccd chips
-on camera mic is pretty quiet
-the camera surface is sooo smooth and shiny that my first touch produced finger prints. makes me want to clean after every use. black chrome with chrome spine.
-spare battery has great price
-friends love the lcd screen

recommended improvements but not complaints for the price:
-no mic jack. usually found in camcorders.
-weird how there's no on off button switch. it powers on/off by flipping the lens cover close.
-the buttons aren't your typical point and shoot. most times we press the center of the circle as "enter". the "enter" button is the "down" arrow of the circle
-battery life is quick.
-can only shoot 3D subjects 5ft+. anything closer than 5ft would cause misalignments. i took sample shots at 4, 5, 7 feet of the same object. the best 3D effect was at 5 ft. 4ft gives headaches and double vision while 7ft started to get flat; only the background became 3D-ish. But i'm sure someday there will be a 3D camera that can change the subject distance. for now, left/right eye corrections would need to be made via post software.
-graining, unless u use a flash. video has some graining too. so use lots of light, as usual.

I use Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 plus to create red/cyan movie files and picture files. I haven't learned how to create shutter and polarized files but eventually will. for now, most people don't have polarized or shutter screens so red/cyan glasses are much cheaper to obtain than 3Dtv's.

other programs i know are Roxio and Sony Vegas. but Magix had more positive reviews and cheaper, plus shutter and polarize features.

i love how fuji even created a 8" 3D frame, Fujifilm V1. i'll wait for the next version for better resolution. the glassless 3dtv probably won't come out till like 2yrs from now. (optomitrists will be happy...joke)

all in all, i am not a photographer, but more of a videographer, exploring the 3D realm. But now I want to take videos AND photos of everything. for the price, it's great.

It's simply amazing technology from Fuji, but there is still a long way to improve. The images caused a strangeness, when we see the first time. But it's really impressive.
The reservations are simply aimed at controlling the parallax that can sometimes threaten sight or even the setting made in the camera does not come on properly when can you see on TV.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

I have been doing 3D photography using film cameras (Realist and Sputnik) for at least 20 years. For the last 9 months, I have been scanning my 3D negatives to convert them to digital format, and formating them for viewing on my 3D(Navidia enabled) computer. A lot of work. And yes, I am very experienced in image processing.

I was reticent to buy this camera when it first came out because I did not believe the claims that FujiFilm was making for it.

I was wrong. The camera does everything described in an excellent fashion.

The camera is very easy to use, but allows modification of most of the shooting controls by the user. I have not yet explored all of the functions.

I was very plesantly surprised at the quality of the 3D images displayed on the camera (without the use of viewing glasses)!

My intended use was for obtaining still photographs, but the camera does allow creating 3D videos.

The quality of the 3D images obtained is excellent - and I have made direct comparisons of the same scene taken with my film cameras and the Fuji Film system. Fuji wins.

I had no problems editing and viewing the files on my 3D computer.

Overall, this camera represents the first "consumer digital 3D photography system". It is very well designed, and is a true pleasure to use!

The Fujifilm W3 is an excellent successor to W1, in that its controls are much easier to use, its images are much more crisp, and in general, the camera is a bargain at twice the price. Combined with some available editing freeware, the W3 allows the user to take 3D photos or video, show them to friends IN 3D on the camera's viewing screen, and even play them back on compatible 3D TVs. To be able to share your photos you are going to have to look for a third party 3D software package. Fortunately there are several free programs that work very well.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

I just had a few tips for those who complained about image quality. If you use the camera set to "AUTO (red camera icon on wheel) you will be getting settings not optimized for the best quality. You will get ISO 800 for all pics which is very grainy not to mention smudgy in detail and you will get a lower quality setting (among other things). I used it on auto for a while and the poor quality wasn't noticeable on the small LCD camera screen, but when I went to do some 3-D printing, you could see the poor quality. So here are some tips for best image quality settings:

Try the P (program) setting, then in the MENU setting, choose ISO 100 (or 200 at the very highest). Any higher and you will not be happy with the image quality especially in darker areas. I will only use ISO 100.

Set the flash to AUTO or FORCED ON and try to shoot with as much light as possible if you don't like flash. Outdoors at night you will have to deal with grainy if you bump up to 400 or 800 or you will have to use a tripod.

Make sure you change IMAGE QUALITY to FINE (the default is normal) and for image size choose one of the 3 proportions of the "L" setting (4:3, 3:2 or 16:9)

Change FINEPIX COLOR to CHROME (C) The default is STD. This will bump up the saturation to more normal looking color.

Making these changes will result in much better quality pictures. Images using AUTO or higher than 400 ISO will look fine on the camera display, but will look like the 1st or 2nd generation of P&S digital cameras did (c 1999/2000) if you view them on your computer or print them for stereo viewing with an external viewer.

By the way, I have an older Argus stereo camera and viewer and the viewer can be used to look at prints made using the Fuji 3D W3. There is also one just like it made by Loreo.

You can DL a program like Stereo Photo Maker and you can prepare and print stereo side-by-side images from it to view with external viewers like this (file/print stereo card/size it so that the width is 152mm and crop vertically if you want a larger image).

This is great for previsualization od our 3D work.

We have big 3D rigs and professional cameras, but to have a quick 3D camera in my pocket is really cool.

We can see how something may work when we setup the big system.

I also have been shooting family holiday photos so i am ready for the future.

Add a Lenovo xpol 3D laptop and you have a complete field capture kit.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

This camera is so amazing I am going to buy a second in the coming year. The pictures are amazing on the LCD or on a 3D TV however if you don't have a 3D TV you have to keep them on the flash card to view them in 3D on the cameras LCD. Or you can export them to your hard drive and use the software that the camera came with to make side by side sets so you can then buy a side by side viewer and look at them that way and they are just as amazing. you can also use other programs to convert them to anaglyph which dulls the color somewhat but still they are awesome much better than 2D photos. I am having a fantastic time learning and using this camera. Buy one you will love it and it also takes 2D pictures as well. Oh and to the person who said you can only view with a 3D TV or in the camera that is not true there are a few free softwares on line that will allow you to convert them and look at them with special glasses like anaglyph or side by side viewers or crossed eyed viewers all you do is use the software that came with the camera to separate the left and right and save pictures or video to your hard drive then use the free softare to convert it to the formate I mention.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

Photos are fantastic!! Video is remarkable for such a small package. Audio barely audible at max setting when playing back videos on camera but OK when played back on PC. No software included to make analyglyphs of photos or videos. Zoom and auto parallax features work great, absolutely amazing! No video or HDMI cables included for a $500+ List price product is inexcusable.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 Digital Camera:

Besides the relatively poor battery life, I can honestly say that I have no other legitimate complaints about this product. It does exactly what I expected it to do, exactly as advertised - take some good 3D Photos. If I were to review this camera from the standpoint of a standard, 2D digital camera, I could hit on a few points like the somewhat lacking macro shots and extra features and megapixels. But this camera was constructed with the mindset of taking 3D photos, and for what it claims to do, it does it quite well. Before we get into the specifics, let's talk about the physical design. The camera itself is just a tad longer than what you'd expect of your average digital camera, but that's to accommodate two lenses vs. the standard one, and also to make room for the 3.5 inch 3D screen on the back (more about that in a moment). The layout is pretty similar to your standard camera, with the shutter button, the navigation wheel, etc. The camera also has a couple of extra buttons specifically for the 3D aspect - a sliding spring button on the top left allows you to adjust the parallax amount in your 3D photos, and a small button on the bottom right allows you to instantly switch between 2D and 3D mode. Besides that, the physical hardware design pretty much reflects every other digital camera.Navigating throughout the menus in the camera itself should be familiar. If you've ever used a digital camera, you should feel right at home. There are, however, a few menus that you won't be familiar with - all dealing with the 3D aspect. A quick read through the manual should get you up and running.Taking pictures is as easy as hitting the shutter button. Now let's talk about that screen! The Finepix W3 includes a high resolution, 3.5" screen on the back that utilizes lenticular stereography to process the 3D effect, all without requiring the user to wear glasses. If you've got an iPhone or iPod Touch lying around, you'll get a very close idea of the actual size and dimensions of the W3's screen. The 3D effect is pretty amazing, with objects clearly layered and a true sense of depth, all sans the glasses. I'll have to tell you though - the amount of depth in your photo matters on various compositional factors when taking your photo, such as framing and background and foreground and focus, etc. (fortunately a small pamphlet included with the W3 hits on these points and offers some advice for taking effect 3D photos). Also, the pictures don't exactly "pop" out of the screen, as you would expect at an IMAX theater - it's more of a depth effect, as if you're staring into a window looking past the camera's screen. It IS, however, possible (with the right adjustments while keeping composition in mind) to create the illusion of objects slightly popping out of the screen (about a quarter of an inch). I've taken various photos with objects extending out of the screen by adjusting the parallax value so that an object a couple of feet away was the focus, causing any object in front of that to have a protruding effect. Now the drawback of this camera - the battery life. It's relatively poor, and that's understandable, considering it's using double the lens, and also displaying a 3D photo on the back on a sharp, brightly lit monitor. Regardless, I still would've liked a longer battery life. A potential solution could've been perhaps including a viewfinder and the option of disabling the screen, as the parallax value can be adjusted even AFTER the 3D photo is taken. All in all, I'd definitely recommend this camera - it's much more than a novelty, and after witnessing the 3D effect, it becomes natural and you begin to realize that it's not merely a gimmick; it's the next natural progression of photography (yes, quite the claim, but you'd have to see it to understand why). As a 2D camera, it's lacking a bit, but it excels as a 3D camera, being one of the only quality sub $1000 3D cameras available. But who cares if it's lacking as a 2D camera - if you wanted to take 2D photos alone, then you probably wouldn't have purchased this camera to begin with and instead opted for one that excels with just 2D photos alone! So who would I recommend this to? Anyone who's interested in 3D photography, anyone who wants a means of viewing high quality glassesless 3d photos, and anyone who just wants to walk around showing off their new gizmo and basking in the "AHH!"'s of others. (There wasn't one person whom I've shown this camera to, family and friends and coworkers, who wasn't impressed with the 3D effects).
