The Sony AF-S Distagon T* 24mm f/2 SSM Wide Angle Lens is for full frame format D-SLR cameras, but when used with cameras with a DX size chip it has a 36mm equivalent focal length. The lens features the highly-regarded Carl Zeiss Distagon retro-focus lens configuration designed for wide-angle lenses that is perfect for scenics, interiors, group photos in tight spaces and other subjects requiring a wide angle lens. The ultra fast f/2 wide-open aperture along with the 9-blade circular diaphragm allows you to work in low light, and with a minimum focus of 7.5" (0.19m) the lens allows you to get in close to your subject.
This lens is distinguished by its fast response focus and extremely quiet, very smooth operation thanks to its built-in SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor), and the focus mode switch allows you to quickly change between manual and autofocus. In keeping with traditional Carl Zeiss design, the all-metal lens barrel has been finished to a very high standard resulting in a visibly high-quality appearance.

Comments about Sony Distagon T* 24mm f/2 SSM Wide Angle Lens:
Use this lens on my Sony SLT-A55v and DSLR-A550. Images are extremely sharp. Focus is fast and works great when shooting video.
It is a little pricey, but I no complaints about the quality.

Comments about Sony Distagon T* 24mm f/2 SSM Wide Angle Lens:
After pre-ordering this lens and reading all the excellent test results I was not happy to receive a lens that produced out of focus images.
after much testing and comparing the results to other lenses for my Sony 850 I had to return the lens. It seems that quality control can be lacking even for a relatively expensive lens.

Comments about Sony Distagon T* 24mm f/2 SSM Wide Angle Lens:
I own all of the Sony Zeiss and Sony G lenses and use them extensively on my A900. All I can say is this is the best lens I have ever used - period. I suppose you'd need to upgrade to a Leica M system to find anything comparable. Having used Canon for 15 years, I can say that there isn't a lens in that lineup that can touch this lens for color, contrast and across the range sharpness in this focal length. It sports amazing build quality in a dense and formidable body. The lens itself is jewel like in construction. A Sony/Zeiss homerun!
What don't I like about it? Nothing! I can't even complain about the price, since other manufacturers charge more for their fast 24mm lenses than Sony does for this gem. Just get one!

Comments about Sony Distagon T* 24mm f/2 SSM Wide Angle Lens:
I'm a professional photographer for over twenty years and for most of those years, shot Zeiss lenses on either Rolleiflexes or Hasselblads, I bought the Sony a900 the week it was released and, before that, shot the Canon 5D with Zeiss MF lenses. This is the lens I wanted when I first moved to Sony and it sure took long enough for them to release it. Fortunately, the wait was really worth it. It's actually my first ZA lens as I mostly shoot wider and did not want to deal with the heavy ZA zooms or any compromises in absolute image quality. This ZA 24 really deliver the goods. Color saturation, contrast (and micro-contrast) and sharpness are all there in spades from wide open at F2! Furthermore, unlike any zoom or even other MF Zeiss lenses this wide, this lens shows very little distortion or vignetting and close to zero CA. Stop down to 5.6-8 and you will be rewarded with sharp corners as well. Outstanding performance! If you can get this lens, buy it.
Comments about Sony Distagon T* 24mm f/2 SSM Wide Angle Lens:
I preordered this lens after long time of anticipation. The lens resolution is excellent; the file size from my Sony a700 is above 12 MB. The lens is slightly lighter than my CZ 85 f1.4 lens. Depth of field is nice. Silent motor that I can hardly hear, accurate fast focusing, no hunting. At 7.5 inch minimum focucing distance, you can use it as a close up lens. Having a large diameter, I thick helps minimize distortion associated with wide angle. This lens is great for outdoor landscape or buildings. Indoor, at equivalent focal length of 36mm on the a700 is great lens for group pictures.
Drawback: it understandably consumes a lot of battery.
