Comments about Eartec MC 4000 4-User Simplex Wireless Communication System (SlimLine):

We used these radio headsets to control 3 of 4 camera operators at a symphony concert in a fairly large hall last Saturday. The radios worked reliably and instructions were clear and easy to understand.

The radios are expensive, and they use a proprietary battery pack, which may be ordered from Eartec. The manual doesn't say what type of battery chemistry (is it NiCd, Lion, NiMh?), so it is not clear as to what the best charging, storage and lifecycle for the batteries is. Frankly this worries me, as if a battery fails, I simply cannot go buy a pack of AA cells and get back to work.

Overall, the headsets fit well, are comfortable enough, the radios have a long range and the signal will penetrate heavy masonry buildings (I was able to communicate with the balcony camera ops from out in the back parking lot while getting some equipment out of my truck) and communication is solid and reliable.

We've tried FRS radios in the past and have given up on them, due to unintelligable speech. The Eartechs provide mission-critical speech quality and plenty of volume. Our concert recording was enhanced by the ability of the Director to read the score and instruct each camera where to frame his shot next, as the orchestra played. The radios did the job and we're happy with them so far.
I would have given them five stars, were it not for the proprietary battery and lack of a clearly-written manual. No mention is made as to whether a license is required to operate these radios.
