The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto is designed to deliver ultra-high quality images along with lightning fast operation. The lens brings a favorite zoom range to the celebrated Canon L-series. It features 2 Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration, and incorporates a floating focusing mechanism for sharpness from close up to infinity. The IS system increases usability by approximately four stops and the fast Ultra-Sonic Motor (USM) and inner and rear focusing system allows for fast quiet Autofocus as close as 3.9' (1.2m).
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM features a function that prevents erroneous operation when the lens is mounted on a tripod or monopod. The lens is dust and water resistant, and has a Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum. The lens is perfect for portraiture or to bring what's far away up close. This addition to the L-series is guaranteed to perform.

As Semi-Pro photographer for over 40 years, I have used top of the line Lenses for Canon and Nikon cameras. I have used these lenses (up to 500mm)for thousands of pix in Africa, Alaska, Latin America, and the U.S. In all that time, I have never had or used a lens equal to this new Canon L lens. After 1,000+ Pix with Canon's newest "L" Lens, it is IMHO - THE BEST Tele Zoom lens over 200mm. This winter 2011, while shooting in the Rockies, I took over 1,000 pix with this lens and have never had, or used, a lens equal to my new Canon 70-300 "L".
The most incredible proof of its overall excellence to me was a handheld photo of a Kestral Hawk over 75' up on the peak of a tree. The 300 d.p.i. prints of this beautiful and quite small hawk's eyes and the talons gripping very small branches were amazingly sharp. Incredible resolution, color fidelity, and stability. In sum, a great new "L" lens by Canon with a very useful Zoom range.

Built Great, and has excellent image quality. So why did I return it? I bought this lens for wildlife shots I was mainly using it between 200-300mm wide open on a Canon 40D. The main issue I had with this lens is that it's poor at stopping action, unless you're in bright sunlight. If you have any shade or cloudy skies you have have to shoot at 1250-3200ISO to stop action, and not all action stops. I took the lens to the zoo and trying to photograph a moving puma was impossible even in the day time. Only when I set it to 3200ISO at 300mm @ 5.6 did I produce a decent shot. 3200ISO shots aren't exactly good for printing unless you're using on a full frame, but then you lose the reach you have with a cropped body. If you plan on shooting Still wildlife, the lens has excellent image quality and is very sharp wide open at 300mm. Focusing was very good, but not excellent. I expected better from a L series lens. The zoom ring feels excellent and I love it's placement, the focus ring was too loose for my taste. I was very excited to get this lens, I've wanted it for the last 7 months. I never thought I would return it, but I did. Anyone who is looking at this lens, I recommend you rent it first, before you buy. [...]

I bought the lens to couple with the 20D I gave my Son as he expressed an interest in digital photography. Soon he will be upgrading to the 5D so we went with a lens that would work well down the road.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Lens:
i am currently using this lens to fulfill all my telephoto needs- wildlife, landscape, and some portrait. if i find that i am spending most of my time at 300, i will probably end up replacing it with a prime. until, i will enjoy the advantages of the 70-300 range and the excellent IQ. the trade off for this light weight marvel is, of course its speed. but again, to compensate requires a lot more $ and a lot more weight.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Lens:
I shoot in a variety of situations where I need zoom ranges from 200 to 400mm. I was seriously looking at the EF70-200mm f2.8L but found I needed something with more reach. The 70-300mm was recommended and I found the Image quality and speed very good as this is an recently upgraded version. I was able to get a quality zoom that covers 200mm to 480mm with my cropped camera at a lower price than the 70-200mm f2.8 with comparable results.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Lens:
I used to own and love a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS mark I until I decided that it was too heavy to lug around the world with me. Not to mention that my wrist was really beginning to ache from long days of shooting with that lens on my 5DMII with grip attached. The 70-200 is an awesome lens that takes great photos, but when the 70-300mm f/4-5.6L came out, it immediately caught my attention not only for the extra 100mm coverage up to 300mm in total, but most importantly for its small/compact size (relative to the 70-200). Having owned this lens for nearly a month now and tested it in the field, I can confirm that it takes awesome photos as well! Although it can only go as wide as f/4 (vs f/2.8 on the 70-200), I don't really find that to be an issue as I am shooting mostly outdoors during the day. I haven't tried shooting with it at night yet nor with a flash, but expect that it should perform well at 70mm when the lens is wide open ...and with the IS, that should also help for night/ low light shots.
I've tested the lens and it's perfect considering I got it as a refurbished by Canon lens through B&H - got lucky and saved some cash!
My primary selection criteria were:
1) Photo Quality: this is an "L" lens and it performs like one! No need for product reviews here - just Google it! There are plenty of raving reviews for it's capabilities and shortcomings, but mostly positive. These are provided by the Pros. I'm just an enthusiast!
2) Weight/Size: As I said, I wanted something smaller to carry while shooting as well as in my bag as I have lots of other "L" lenses and flash accessories (not to mention laptop, etc.) to carry while traveling. The 70-300 complemented my 24-105L, 50L, and soon to have Tokina 16-28 very well in my bag of photo/work gear!
3) Price: this lens is reasonably priced for an "L" series lens. I got lucky getting it even less as a refurbished lens that works perfectly fine (or as far as I know/ "see" anyway).
I highly recommend this lens for outdoor / nature photography. Could also be great for portraits in well-lit conditions. Haven't tried in low light conditions, but should be ok with f/4 at 70mm and IS.

Great image quality, through the entire zoom range. I love the bokeh on this lense for Portraits. I have so far mostly used this for my nephews pewee football league, sharp fast autofocus. Nice compact size, weight not an issue. On the down side it does hunt for AF in low light.

Tried this lens for the first time.
All I could say, it was worth every penny.
Being a novice, I decided to go for L lens.
Torn between a 70-200 EF 4, and this lens.
After all the studies decided on the 70-300mm,because all the features it has, plus all the abilities you can perform.

Sold my 70-200 IS L (Mk 1) because of the new Mk 2 , but I tried this because of
The extra range and it was cheaper than the mk2 of the 70-200. Wow!! What a lens! The IQ, IS, size and weight, in my opinion, is better than the Mk 1 70-200 lens! It's easier to handle, transport, and use due to the size, and with the price it's a KEEPER!!! I don't miss the f2.8 at all with this lens since the IS is so superior.
Glad I found and got this lens before spending almost 1K more on the Mk 2 70-200. More versatile for more occasions!

It's better than 70-300 DO but comparable with 70-200 IS L II
from 200 to 300 i prefer the digital crop from picture in 200mm than full picture on 300mm
but in 300mm it's give a fabulous bluer in the background more than 200mm
but remember this lens based on F/4 to 5.6 on 300mm and the 70-200 IS L II based on 2.8 flat from 70-200mm
so the 70-200 IS L II give fare better bluer in the background in similar range .
Oslo this lens have a very bad auto focus with 5D II

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Lens:
It's small, it's light, and it focuses fast. It's sharp but not amazingly sharp. It's much better optically than the 100-400 IMO. 300mm fully open is good. The IS works very well. It's awkward handheld without a battery grip. Fit and finish and build is solid. The tripod collar or lack thereof is ridiculous. In general I would have paid more for a bigger, heavier slightly more expensive model that stayed f4 through 200mm at least. That said I never cease to be amazed by two star reviews complaining about it being slow due to small aperture. Read and learn before spending [$]

I use it for a wide range of indoor and outdoor purposes, including scenery, animals, people, events. The image stabilization works very well. The last Canon telephoto lens I had in this range (several years ago) did not compare to the image quality and range of light of this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Lens:
I was debating between this lens and the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, however after doing extensive research and consulting other photographers (some pro) I elected to purchase this lens.
I borrowed my friend's 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and my other friend's 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens. I took around 100 shots with each lens on my 7D body as a comparison. Both lenses were extremely sharp. In the end I decided to purchase the 70-300mm due to the work I would use it for. (Landscapes, AirShows, Wildlife) I needed the extra 100mm of zoom.
I placed the order with B&H and received my lens. Could not wait to try it out, first shots taken with the lens, WOW!
The images are tack sharp. The color is amazing and spot on. The Autofocus is fast, accurate and quiet.
This lens has some heft but I feel that it makes it easier to handhold. I spent 8 hours shooting with this lens recently at an AirShow and my arms were not at all tired at the end of the show.
The lens is built like a tank. The zoom and focus rings are smooth. The barrel does not rotate so you can use a circular-polarizer more easy and effectively.
About the tripod mount collar: I contacted Canon directly and spoke with their customer service department. I did let them know that I was dissatisfied that the lens did not include a tripod mount collar. I explained to him that all the other L-series zoom lenses include one and you would have thought that paying for a L-Series lens that it would have come with one. Now every website lists it as an accessory, I said how ridiculous. The rep researched this extensively and told me that every website shows them as being on backorder and that Canon possibly might decide to ship them to customers. Make sure to register your lens serial number at their website.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Lens:
First of all I only had this lense to test for a day or so and this may not be the most accurate reflection. It is very light and feels solid. Easy to use and as familiar as any other L series telephoto. It seems to have a narrower opening than most and that restricts the light. IS works great and it holds the focus through the zoom range. Not sure how it works in low light or night for never had a chance to take any photos in those conditions.
