The Canon Extender EF 2X III is designed for select Canon L-series telephoto lenses. The extender is perfect for photojournalists, nature and sports photographers who need to get close to distant and challenging subjects. The Extender EF 2x III increases the focal length of a lens by a factor of 2x while still delivering superb image quality. To ensure the best possible image quality in all shooting conditions, it also combines enhanced environmental protection, redesigned optics and improved data communication between lens and camera.

The extender allows professional photographers to shoot distant subjects without having to carry a number of heavy lenses. The Extender EF 2x III features five groups of nine elements, ensuring improved optical performance. All optical elements use Canon's Super Spectra coating, reducing ghosting and flare to minimize post-processing requirements. A new Fluorine Coating on the front and rear elements makes marks, such as spots left by water or fingerprints, much easier to clean than standard coatings.

To facilitate the accurate transfer of imaging data between the lens and camera body, the extender features an integrated processor which ensures all focusing, metering and ID information is available - allowing the photographer to capture crisp, well-exposed images. When combined with the latest range of premium Canon L-series lenses, these extenders enable higher AF accuracy, ensuring perfectly sharp shots, even when capturing moving subjects.

A carefully positioned lens release mechanism also makes it easy to mount the extenders quickly, reducing the time that the camera and lens are exposed to the environment. The extenders offer the exceptional build-quality expected from Canon's professional products, and are resistant to both dust and water, allowing photographers to use them in extreme shooting conditions.

Note: This teleconverter will only fit and work with a select list of lenses. Please click here for a compatibility chart of all compatible lenses.

Note: Autofocus will work only if the effective aperture is within the range of the camera (currently f/8 with most EOS cameras).

Great lens. Very sharp. (see attached sample images). I wasn't expecting such sharpness from this teleconverter, but poor DOF (depth of field) @ f/11(even the background is sharp). That is one drawback of tele-converters. Also, i had to shoot Manual Focusing mode. The AF does not work with EF 2x III extender & EOS Rebel T2i series. Bummer. But this is definitely a keeper for natures shots and outdoor sports.

I had never tried a 2X before, thinking it might be too good to be true. But with the new series III, I thought it might be OK on a high-quality prime lens. I went out for the day with my 7D and the 2x extender attached to a 500mm f4 IS lens. During the shooting (birds at considerable distance), I revelled in the closer view I was getting. However, back at the computer, I wasn't so happy. I am used to getting crisp feather detail on bird images, having learned good technique over about 5 years of serious practice with wildlife, shooting with Canon gear, most shots using the above 500mm lens with a 1.4X Extender. There was no crisp detail in any of the shots with the 2x. Even with ambitious post-processing from RAW, they were throwaway shots. The best single descriptor I had for the shots was "mush".

To be sure it wasn't just a bad day, I set up a controlled situation indoors. Mounted to a sturdy Gitzo tripod, with mirror locked up, etc., I took photos with just the 500mm lens mounted, then the 1.4X, then the 2.0X, all of the same subjects. Later I compared them on the computer, with the same results I got in the field; the 500mm results were sharp, the 1.4X a little less so but still very good, and the 2.0x result were garbage. Here was the decisive test: I resized the test photos from the 500mm alone by a factor of 2.0 in Photoshop, something no sane photographer would do to achieve a better result. However, the resulting images were sharper than those taken with the 2.0X extender. In short, the 2.0x not only did not provide and benefit, it was actually detrimental. I concluded I would get better results by shooting with the 500mm alone and cropping to fill the frame with the bird. Fortunately, I bought this from B&H rather than from someone on an on-line auction site or a lesser retail company. They took it back in a completely pleasant and business-like manner. Thank you, B&H.

This results still confuses me. The people at Canon are no dummies, so why would they make something that provides no benefit? I have no answer to that. It is just possible that I had a defective unit, so before you use this review alone to make your decision, search for others.

I have been using the Mk II with my 70-200mm IS II and had the chance to use a friend to do a side by side comparison with this new Mk III. Its not hype - it really is better. I cannot certify its speed or the new lens config, but I was able to get much clearer action shots with the MkIII.

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender III (Teleconverter):

I am using the 2X III Extender with my Canon 5D mkII and Canon 70-200f2.8II lens. My goal was to get a further telephoto reach without having to lug around a 2nd lens and also avoid the expense of a second white lens. Also have the Canon 24-105 but the extender does not work with that lens.
Have done a lot of test shots and came to several conclusions which have all been noted by other users as well. With the doubling of the focal length it is necessary to have a fairly fast shutter speed to get a sharp image. Unless the day is bright that could mean bumping up the ISO. If you have to bump the ISO up too much then that creates a grainy image. Also best to avoid using f5.6 although depending on the shot it may be OK. I found that I also had to use the micro adjustment for the lens/extender combo to get the focus point dead on. Ended up setting it to +3. When the lens is used without the extender the setting was fine at 0. Luckily the camera remembers when the extender is on and automatically changes the setting to +3 in that case. I compared the lens alone to the lens/extender on downloaded pictures. Identical shots - to see which was sharper. The shots from just the lens had to be enlarged more then the lens/extender so they were the same size on the computer screen. I discovered that if the shutter speed was not fast enough then the shots from just the lens were actually sharper when enlarged then the lens/extender combo. However once the shutter speed was fast enough - about 1/400 sec or faster - the combo was better. Also seemed the further away the subject the better the extender was - inversely the closer the subject the better the lens alone was in comparison.
My conclusion is that if you are using it on a fairly well lit day outdoors you should be fine and get very good results. You really need the light in order to get the fast shutter speed and also keep the ISO down as low as possible. If anyone is using a fast shutter speed and still not getting the results after several shots - try checking your lens/extender micro adjustment on the camera. This may take some trial and error but once you have the right setting you are all set.

Canon says that this extender works with their 100-400 MM lens and it does but be ware the auto focus feature does not work with this lens.

I am using this extender with my 300MM f2.8 lens to make it a 600MM lens. Even with a tripod, pictures are not as sharp as I would like.

Extremely useful for exactly what it claims. Although you lose 3 stops (f2.8 to f5.6), for outdoor shooting it performs extremely well. I found that with Stabilization on level 2 it works very well. Colors are good, sharp, and no added grain. Good work Canon. Maybe vIV could only lose 1 f-stop...

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender III (Teleconverter):

This is a "lens addition" where you have to weigh the cost for what you get. Used on my 400mm 5.6 I'm able to get the reach I wanted but no auto focus. On my 70-200 - it's slow in the auto focus so tough to shoot any relatively fast moving items. Not for "low light" shooting. All in all I receive the reach I wanted on my 5D.

Used it with the newest Canon 300mm L lens and it retains excellent sharpness. With this combo the focussing speed is a bit slow and frustrating if the lens hasn't been prefocussed at approximately the right distance. Nevertheless the image quality is great, particularly when compared to the II edition.

I wanted to use this extender as an affordable alternative to purchasing a super telephoto lens to get close up action at my son's outdoor sporting events. I can see that action at the opposite end of the soccer field, zoom in and capture great action shots. With my EF f/2.8 70mm-200mm I can clearly see facial expressions from well over 60 yards away. As the action develops and approaches I get great action shots of individual athletes.

I have owned the tc 2x II which was good, but this version seems a lot sharper and less CA, especially when used on a sharp lens to begin with. I am using it on a 70-200mm f4L IS with great results, even in the corners on zoomed in landscapes. The 1.4 version is supposed to be better, but I feel that going from a 200mm to a 280mm seems like a waste, like why bother? At least with the 2x you are doubling your focal length making any loss in quality worth it. If you have a very sharp lens to begin with I would recommend the version III lens over the version II.

I matched this extender to a Canon 200mm f/1.8 lens
to achieve an effective 400mm f/3.5 range.

Shooting youth soccer league this combo gives a great length lens.

Images don't seem to have lost any quality
                          with the extender.

Was a little heavy & pricy but worth it.

Cheap way to double your focal range and use with 70-200mm F2.8 IS Mark2 on 7D.
Work great and fast, sharpness of the photo is good.

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender III (Teleconverter):

I use the extender on my 5D Mark II with the 70-200 2.8 lens. After being use to the 7D crop factor body, there simply was not enough reach at 200mm on a full frame body. Primary use is for outdoor baseball games

I've noticed the further you zoom, the more unsteady hand held photography is, so a tripod is suggested or increase shutter speed to stop image blur.

There is nothing bad about the extender, just remember that autofocus may not work on some slower lenses. The minimum Canon recommend is an aperture of 2.8, which gets stopped down to 5.6. Any value higher, and you lose autofocus.

The extender is perfect for people who have a good L Series lens and don't want to buy another to achieve more reach. Image quality is still very sharp, much sharper than cropping the image on your computer.

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender III (Teleconverter):

I am finding that in low light this 2X EF Extender is in need of a tripod to get the sharper shot. Since I am using a 2.8 lens I am finding a loss of two stops as expected, throughout. I am thinking this extender might be best in higher light situations when you can use a faster shutter speed, and obtain a crisper image. All in all, it is fun to get in twice as close to the subject!
