The Nikon CoolPix S8100 (Black) isn't loaded with frivolous bells and whistles--it's got seriously awesome bells and whistles like a 12.1MP CMOS sensor, a sharp, wide-angle to telephoto 10x optical zoom lens (30-300mm 35mm equivalent) made with Nikon ED glass, 1080p HD video, 5 frames per second shooting, 4-way image stabilization for sharp photos even in low light, and a beautiful 921,000-dot high resolution 3" LCD display.
But there's a lot more. Like Subject Tracking to automatically track and auto focus on a moving subject; one-touch video recording with optical zoom, stereo sound and an in-camera editing function; HDR (high dynamic range) function that automatically merges several images of the same scene to achieve a single image with a broad, beautiful range of tonal detail not otherwise possible; and 17 scene modes including the Scene Auto Selector, which automatically recognizes any shooting situation and optimizes all the settings for that scene.
Night Portrait combines consecutive shots of the background while the subject in the foreground is taken using the flash, allowing challenging night scenes to be easily captured during handheld shooting and eliminating any subject movement. Night Landscape combines a series of five consecutive shots taken at a fast shutter speed into a single image with reduced noise for taking handheld shots in low light.
There's also the Smart Portrait System, with In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, improved Face-Priority AF, Blink Warning, Smile Timer, and Skin Softening to make your friends and family actually happy to see themselves in your pictures.

first impression of the S8100 camera is that it is well built and has a great finished quality to it. The camera operating system is fast and loads menus and pictures quickly, I purchased it for the high megapixes picture quality and the ability to shoot high definition video with a realtime auto focus and zoom while filming. It performs these functions great! the HDMI connection is a plus.
perhaps the biggest draw back is that the flash pops up right where you tend to hold the camera with your left hand, this will take getting used to.
Have been shopping around for over a month and settled on this camera, for the price and features it seemed to be the best avail, I am very impressed and look forward to a few years of use.

I bought the S8100 cause i wanted a lightweight travel zoom camera for all my holiday snapshots - a "don't think just shoot" camera who fits in my pocket, and cause i do not want to carry my canon SLRs around in my vacation time. So I use the S8100 side by side with my Olympus E-p2. The Nikon is for tourist stuff and the Olympus i use if i find something more interesting when Im traveling which could be worth a reportage or other i can sell.
Nikon S8100 - The good things.
First of all the camera performs well in low light situations (night scene mode).
The camera handles noise in high ISO areas impressive for a small sensor, and the stabilizer works great in low light to - even handheld.
overall the camera is fun to shoot with (specially if you are used to a heavy SLR where you have total control).
There are no geo tagging which I think is a big plus that Nikon do not follow all the other companies (panasonic, Leica, Sony and so on...) who seem more interested in stupid features as the geo tagging than the actual picture and video quality (Well done Nikon!)
The Camera is well build (besides a couple of flip floppy plastic covers).
And the ergonomics is great, so the camera is easy to hold and you do not accidently hit buttons while you are shooting.
Nikon S8100 - The bad things.
No RAW shooting.
The camera has very limited user control and it is a bit frustrating that you do not have the shutter priority or the aperture priority.
The flash - can not be controlled, it is not possible to turn it down or up and that is not good when the flash automatics often is to strong.
The automatic scene mode (who decides what kind of scene you are shooting) is not very intelligent and 8 out of 10 times it doesn't get the scene right.
in low light with or without flash, the camera has a very hard time photographing moving objects - even if they are moving slow.
Overall the camera is a fine point and shoot camera it does the job snapshooting family, parties, vacations. The 10X zoom is a bit slow compared to sony or canon point and shoot cams and that can be a bit irritating.
I have not noticed any distortion when zooming or shooting at the widest (30 mm).
I probably wont look for nikons small cameras next time Im buying a point and shoot, because it is offering that much value for money. It seems that Sony or Canon cameras is slightly better in build quality has a faster zoom, offers more manual like controls, shoots and focuses faster (specially the Sony hx5v which is a lot faster).
The Nikon S8100 photo quality looks fine but its not a revolution, and I really miss the RAW files when i edit.
My girlfriend now use the camera, she is new to photography so i thought the camera would be perfect for her, but it seems that it is not, because of the cameras complete auto modes which often makes the wrong decisions.
In short terms - you have to know to much about what the different auto modes does to avoid getting to many ruined photos.
So if the camera (as i think it is) is made for people who just wanna shoot and not think then it is in my opinion a failure.

The only thing I am uncomfortable with is the location of the video button. It is located where you normaly put your thumb and I am constantly turning on the video mode.

Comments about Nikon CoolPix S8100 Digital Camera (Black):
I wanted this camera to be our all-purpose go-to camera, easy for travel. I also wanted it to take photos of products I make and sell on etsy. It's working out great for both uses. I had to learn a bit how to adjust and get my lighting right for the product photos- but they're turning out great.
The detail is amazing. The clarity is great. Now that I've figured out how to adjust white balance (called hue on this camera) It's really going well. Oh- and it's so fast! I compared and researched until my head was spinning- and my general love of Nikons plus the fast speed of this camera (I checked it out in a local store) won me over. It doesn't feel flimsy either.
I love the night portrait feature. I've taken pics at night on a camping trip (the day after we got the camera!) and they turned out great. Compared the night portrait with just regular flash- no contest. The night features flash but don't wash out the subject. And, you can tell it's night still.
Used the macro function on the trip as well to snap pics of some flora- got great results. Was easily able to focus in on a flower and blur the background- with the camera just an inch in front of the flower- it's clear and crisp and the color is outstanding.
The screen on the camera is so clear- it's easy to see what you're getting and to view/review shots.
I love the smile feature as well- that's a lot of fun.
I thought the pop up flash would be hard to get used to, but so far it's not. Although I haven't had need of the flash too much. Once the flash is up it's not a big deal. It's just remembering on that first flash pic that it will pop up. There is a tiny bit of space to the left of it so that I can have my finger on the corner (I notice in the newer model that the flash is almost flush with the outside edge- I like this design better)
It's small but feels sturdy in your hands. Great big lens-
all in all I love it.
negatives- I knew this purchasing, but no there aren't that many manual controls here. But the ones I really need to have are there (exposure, white balance, etc) I wouldn't say that's a negative, just wouldnt be for everyone. I wanted a point and shoot- this is a great one.
pop up flash- I worried about it and still hope that I don't do something to break it (forget it's up and put it in the case, for example) but I don't foresee this to really be an issue. I think that I've gotten used to it enough to be mindful.
Last potential negative: I went ahead and purchased an external battery charger- I just don't want to have to have the camera plugged in. I think an external battery charger is pretty essential- especially as I purchased an extra battery and plan to always have a charged one ready to go.
I haven't noticed extremely short battery life- I suppose it depends on shooting conditions, flash, video usage, etc. But I played around with the camera for a full day, then used it a lot on a camping trip, and when I got back just a bit. Only then did battery say low. I wasn't using video much/at all during this time. I was pleased. I took around 200+ pics (minimum) during this time playing around with all the settings and such, reviewing lots as well.
I'm happy. I love it. I'd recommend it. I think it's a solid little camera with just enough bells and whistles.

Comments about Nikon CoolPix S8100 Digital Camera (Black):
This little camera produces files that are quite large-12MB. The images it produces are quite colorful presumably by the presets in the camera itself, but I found them quite saturated but pleasing for most images. The presets for taking the picture make using this camera relatively simple. The camera does take longer in transcribing the images than similar point and shoot but this is generally a problem.

Comments about Nikon CoolPix S8100 Digital Camera (Black):
I shoot professionally with canon & panasonic and sometimes Red, so I have better quality cameras to compare this to whether fair/unfair. For the money this little camera is great to have on hand because it takes really nice pics. The strength of this camera is shots taken with natural light (outdoors). I personally prefer the look of Nikon over Canon, but Nikon still lags behind in the features dept (as of this writing). I think the stereo mic was overkill, it's not like you're shooting a movie with this thing, but the video is adequate. If you want a true little work horse, thats blazingly fast when autofocussing, and don't want to break the bank, buy this camera. My last pocket camera was Sony and i'm soooooo glad I upgraded. I keep it in my pocket or camera bag all the time.

I use my camera for personal use of family and friends. I'm not an advanced camera user and mostly use the Auto function. So far, every picture and movies has been perfect!!! I'm not crazy about the user manual being on disk rather than hard copy. I also prefer a lens view for some pictures - which this camera does not have. Other than that, I love the camera!

I use this whenever I don't want to lug my larger cameras along. It takes excellent, fine grained photos and videos and is easy to use. I also use it in a housing for underwater stills and videos and have been very pleased with the results. Flash position makes holding it awkward.[...] Then flooded housing, ruined camera. Liked it enough that I bought another.
