Whether you're a street photographer - sniping for your bread and butter - or any shooter desiring a less expensive backup - or you have a serious hankering to shoot video and stills, the Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only) (Body) is sure to entice, and satiate, not to mention satisfy. Yes, that's correct friends, the E-5 features 1280 x 720p high def video capture, in addition to its 12.3MP still image capabilities. And let's just cut the rest of the suspense right here and now - YES! The E-5 also features a 3" dual axis swivel HyperCrystal LCD. Phew! (You were worried, weren't you? Don't lie to me - I can tell)
So, what's up with the video you ask? As Olympus puts it, this camera captures 1280 x 720p "head turning" high definition video at 30 frames per second. A standard 3.5mm jack also allows for connection of an external microphone for superior stereo audio recording to go with that stellar video. If you don't feel like connecting a mic, or you simply want to be less obvious, you can also utilize the camera's built-in monaural microphone. Additionally, the E-5 accepts over 20 Four Thirds lenses - from wide angle fisheye to super telephoto - definitely something for those into micro four thirds to ponder.
When it comes to the camera's primary function - capturing 12.3MP digital stills - the E-5 hasn't lost touch with its main purpose. Working together with Olympus' TruePic V+ Image Processor and the high-speed live CMOS image sensor the E-5 captures stunning still photos. Even in low light settings the E-5 gets the shot thanks to the camera's 6400 ISO capabilities. Where oh where do you store all these exceptional images (and videos)? Well, my friends the E-5 stores your work to both CompactFlash and SDHC/SDXC memory cards, allowing for hassle-free transfer and storage of your files.
When it comes to other exciting aspects of the E-5 you'll benefit from the camera's 10 in-camera Art Filters for fun and impressive effects, like Pop Art, Soft Focus, and Pin Hole (who doesn't like pin hole photography?). Olympus also wants you to know that the E-5 isn't just easy to get along with - it also happens to be one tough cookie. It's "thixomold magnesium alloy chassis" is splashproof and dustproof. In other words, a few sprinkles or a little bit of dust won't hurt it. So, whether you're a seasoned pro, or aspiring to be one, the E-5 provides numerous attractive features guaranteed to fill a need.
To prevent image blur caused by camera shake, the E-5 camera employs in-body Mechanical Image Stabilization to compensate for camera movement up to 5 steps EV and delivers blur-free images taken with any of the ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses available for the camera. Moreover, built-in image stabilization works with not only long focal length lenses, but with wide, ultra-wide and even fisheye lenses, permitting long exposures during low-light and night scene settings with sharp, stabilized results
Class 6 or higher SD cards are recommended for optimal movie shooting
The E-5 camera also features an award-winning built-in Dust Reduction System that eliminates spots from photos with the exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter. The system won the prestigious Asahi Shimbun Invention Prize in the 2010 Japan National Invention Awards. The patented ultrasonic technology physically vibrates to remove dust and other particles from the front of the image sensor, and captures the debris on a special adhesive membrane every time you turn on the camera. It can even remove dust attached by intermolecular force that cannot be removed by physical vibration or by discharging static electricity. These spot-free photos liberate users from hours spent retouching photographs at the computer or sending their cameras back to the manufacturer to remove dust trapped inside
With most biaxial sensors, performance on the vertical and horizontal axes is not equal, and there is often a perceived difference in response time when using different lenses. However, unlike systems that respond at nominally lower f-stop values simply by boosting sensitivity, the E-5 camera's AF sensor features a houndstooth pattern phase detection sensor layout that uses micro-lamination technologies to achieve superior real-world performance. The 11 AF target points on the E-5 can be selected to work individually or dynamically in combination with adjacent target points
The E-5 camera also features five frames-per-second continuous shooting and a 1/8000 second top shutter speed required for shooting situations when you are capturing fast-moving subjects

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):
I upgraded from the E3 and I couldn't be happier. Photos are noticably crisper and clearer. It seems everything from the E3 is compatable, which is nice. Batteries, battery charger, Power Battery Holder (HLD-4) are all compatable. A few buttons have been moved to make room for the excellent LCD monitor, but navigating around the controls is quite simple. I don't take alot of video. The only thing I can say about it is I wish there was a way to shoot video throught the view finder. You have to use the monitor and shoot video with live view. I've been an amature photographer for quite a few years and using the monitor to frame a scene is really awkward for me. Other than that, I can't find anything I don't like about the camera. They also got rid if the xD card slot and replaced it with a SD slot, which was good to see! If you're looking for a really good DSLR, I HIGHLY recommend this camera.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):
Through disappointments in my Canon 40D and lens incompatibilities even with supposed Canon fixes, I stumbled upon the 4/3rds system with my Leica Digilux 3 that I absolutely love for nature and wildlife shooting. However it does have some limitations. It is too slow for low light and fast sports indoors and is not weatherproof. That is where the E-5 comes into play. Now I have a wonderful, rugged, easy to use, multifunctional camera body that does all of this plus has interchangeable lenses with my Leica 4/3rds system. Yes, it does have some noise at high ISO but I shoot raw and adjust customized noise reduction in photoshop. It's also nice to have a manufacturers top line camera without spending a fortune, the ability to buy 3 levels of quality glass without paying for image stabilization for every lens (built in body stabilization) and some splash proof lenses to boot. Olympus, please keep 4/3rds alive as it does what it was designed to do and better than the competition!

I started a photography business 8 years ago and started with a Nikon, but quickly switched to Olympus. I have owned multiple models, but the E-5 is the best so far. Color, tone, and photo quality is great! The only pit-fall have found so far is the LCD screen dims too quickly and it is not consistant as to how long it stays bright; other than that, it is awesome!

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):
I've ben really impressed with the image quality of the camera since I purchased it. Focus is fast with the 12-60 & 50-200. Even the 50mm seems faster. OVF is much brighter and larger than previous 4/3 cameras. I normally don't shoot much above iso 800 or so, and haven't noticed any noise in some good sized prints I've made. Maybe at 100% on screen at close range some grain its visible, but I didn't see it in any real world situations...
Have used it out I'm the rain with no issues, and love using the articulating monitor to get some really unique framing/views, resulting in shots I wouldn't have gotten with a fixed screen.

I have been using the Olympus E system since before the E1 professional camera was released. I am totally biased. AS a camera I find it's ease of use compelling, the lack of icons refreshing, two dial control is lovely and menus easy to navigate. The shortcuts are well signposted, on this camera.
I use this camera both professionally as a photographer and as a teaching aid as a college lecturer.
Negative things.... I'll have to come back to you on that one, but hey I admit I'm biased

I am amateur, never took any course but I would love to. I already had two Olympus bodies (E510, E 30) but have been looking for an upgrade since my E-510 seems to "dated" for me. I LOOOOOOOVE the new display and of course some more "inner" specs. I waited so much, i am so glad I did it.

A year ago I switched from Oly E3 to Canon 5D MkII. Full format and less noise was the big promise. But finding a suitable wide angle was very very difficult, even the famous 16-35 did not do the job like my old Zuiko 7-14mm. Despite all rumors on Olympus abandoning the SLR all together, I decided to switch back to Olympus. And everybody declared me crazy. Now I own the Olympus E5 and I love it! The camera is very responsive, colors are great and the menu structure is definitely better than Canon. Detail and definition equals Canon, and I do not see a big difference in noise levels up to ISO 1600. And in the end, Zuiko lenses (7-14; 12-60 and 50-200) are optically better than Canon. Great contrast and less, much less CA. It feels like coming home...

I have an E520 and just upgraded to the E5. I could see the difference immediately, both in autofocus accuracy and image quality. With the 14-35mm F2, and the 50-200mm SWD, the E520 had focus issues but the E5 fixes that. Razor sharp images, fantastic JPEG output.
Still getting used to all the controls, but am already loving this camera. I hope Oly follows this up with an E7 next year.

I ordered this as the latest in the "E" series to augment my E-3 & other E series cameras! It's pretty much as advertised and I'm not a high ISO shooter so it works well for me. I mainly shoot landscapes and birds. Love the weather proofing and image quality, especially with my SHG & HG lenses!

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):
Having worked with the E-5 for a few months, I must admit I'm impressed.
Image quality, especially with Zuiko High and Super-High grade lenses, is amazing. Olympus color is spot-on and the white-balance sensor does a great job for all but the trickiest of lighting situations, saving time from power-up to first shot.
The articulated LCD is a huge upgrade from my E-510, allowing for camera positions that were difficult or impossible before.
It's heavier and larger than the E-510, which is fine for me as it fits better in my hand. Obvious build quality and the dust/splash sealing keeps me shooting when conditions deteriorate.
Controls are well-placed, and menus are easy to navigate. Battery life is good. It's quick to power-up.
Favorite features:
- In-body stabilization - a huge plus for me as I'm a bit shakey-handed.
- Auto-focus is even better, esp with SWD lenses.
- Built-in eyepiece shutter.
- Articulating LCD
- Color rendering - spot-on.
- WB Sensor
720p video is fine, but lack of 1080p fails to stand this up to some alternatives if video is important to you.
High ISO performance, while better than earlier models, could be better.
The first one shipped with what looked like oil spots on the sensor, but B&H replaced the E-5 quickly. (Thanks!) The replacement is flawless.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):
I've used the E-5 for about a month, rotating my set of lenses. I'm quite pleased with the results. I upgraded from E-30 & E-520 bodies, largely because of the E-5's better (bigger) viewfinder. The E-5 provides greatly improved focus accuracy over the E-30 & e-520 with all my lenses, particularly my ZD 70-300 zoom (the latter seems a different and better lens on the E-5). IQ improvement with all lenses justifies the upgrade and I would agree this is the ultimate 4/3 camera body. It's not too big, nor too heavy, and I have medium-sized hands - in fact its size seems perfect - if you liked the E-30's ergonomics the E-5 should be just fine. Weather sealing is worth having for the extra peace of mind. Also, I really like the Viewer 2 software, it's a big step up on Olympus Master.
I do find the price difficult to swallow. This camera is certainly worth it for what it brings provided you are already invested in several 4/3 lenses. If you don't have the lenses it's still good, but unfavorably priced against the competition.

Comments about Olympus E-5 DSLR Camera (Body Only):
Don't get hung up on comparing number of megapixels and sensor size among all the competing brands. The E-5 is a high-quality camera with an excellent choice of lenses. Four-thirds format allows a more compact design with a 2x factor, relative to 35mm format.
