The Pentax K-r Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 DA-L and 55-300mm DA-L Zoom Lenses (Black) is that lightweight, mid-range 12.4MP digital SLR camera with two zoom lenses that also shoots dazzling 720p HD video that you've been looking for.
It's got a few other things going for it, too--like a high resolution 3" LCD display with 930,000 dots, up to 6 frames per second shooting speed, super-accurate 11-point autofocus system, sensitivity up to 25,600 ISO so you never miss a photo due to low light, shutter speeds up to 1/6000 second to freeze the action, and dual power options, either rechargeable Li-ion or easy-to-find AA batteries. The 18-55mm lens provides very wide-angle to normal views that will cover a surprisingly wide range of photo opportunities, while the 55-300mm lens covers the normal to very long telephoto range with ease.
Wait! That's not all: the K-r has an efficient dust removal mechanism that automatically shakes dust off the CMOS sensor, a custom image function for applying one of nine creative modes (such as Bleach Bypass, a dramatic effect used in movies) to any image you want, a digital filter function with a choice of 18 filters that can process images without a computer (including Starburst, Sketch, High Contrast, Fisheye, Toy Camera, Posterization, Retro, etc.), an upgraded HDR (High Dynamic Range) function to create a superb image in difficult lighting situations (by combining 3 different exposures of the same scene) even without a tripod, and 3 different cross processing options to create dramatically different colors. It even has a high-speed infrared data transmission system--the first in a Pentax camera.

This camera package is fantastic. You get an ~28-450mm field of view across 2 optically superb lenses.
The camera body does not dissapoint. Clean images through ISO 1600, 3200-6400 clean up effortlessly in post, and even the pushed High ISO settings are workable for web, and printing 4x6.
I have never had a camera that nails white balance, and exposure as well as this one. Set Auto ISO 200-6400, matrix metering, and 'P' setting, and just shoot.
The processing in camera is not something I thought I would appreciate, but it is useful to get a desired look without messing with the picture too much in post processing.
Super fast autofocus, and impressive (particularly for this price point) 6fps shooting. Ability to shoot Adobe standard (uncompresed) .DNG files for future compatibility. This camera ticks all the boxes and then some.
Pros
- 6fps
- bracketing
- Clean high ISO
- accurate metering
- High quality 920k dot lcd
- solid build quality
- easy to navigate menus
- High MP sensor for liberal cropping
Negatives (none of which I expect in a camera priced at this level):
- Not weather sealed like lots of Pentax other bodies
- No top LCD, or second e-dial
Bottom Line:
You get more features, more solid build, better quality kit lenses, and superior out of camera jpgs rather than choosing Canikon... don't think, just buy 9/10!!!

I'll just keep it short and ditto everything "Much ado about Nothing" said. The only difference for me is that I'm still not happy with the t2i. The images are great - it's just a dorky camera that begs for sansabelt slacks and tuna casseroles. It's soulless, and doesn't beg to be used, but it I have to admit that it feels like a million bucks compared to the kr.

I did extensive research before my purchase and I was not disappointed. The K-r is a super value for the money and has the capability to do everything from point & shoot to any custom combination you wish. This is a camera with which you can grow.

I sell photos online and this camera is a tremendous asset in getting great photos! Easy to use, goes from frame to frame quickly without losing the shot. I photograph a lot of wildlife and sometimes that fraction of a second can matter. Using extended lens does make camera heavier, highly suggest using tripod for extended time for photographing. Photos are crisp and clear. I have only had camera a week, but have taken over 700 photos and have not had issue of losing battery life quickly.

I use the camera mainly for landscape photos and family photos. After reseaching the DSLR market for 5 years I decided on Pentax. I have been a photographer for most of my 68 years. This is all the camera I need. Great looking JPEGs and they make real nice 8x10s. Judging by the crispness of the enlargements I know I can go larger. My first SLR was a Pentax Spotmatic by the way. I have gone thru Pentax, Nikon, Mamiya, Olympus and even a 4x5. I love photography and hope this one will last a while. I purchased the two year extended warrantee so no worries.

I purchased this camera about a month ago and so far it has performed flawlessly. It was the only camera in the 750 price range that came with a telephoto lens.
Simply put, this camera takes amazing pictures and covers a huge range of ISO and zoom with its 55mm and 300mm lenses.
The fish eye digital feature is a unique setting that will allo you to distort a photo without actually having a fisheye lens.
The shutter speed is super fast for action photos in "TV setting," (shutter priortiy mode) I've been able to take clear photos of a hummingbird in flight!
I love being able to take HD videos with the same camera as well.
Overall I'm very pleased with my K-R. Its simply the most versitile camera I've found in this price range and makes a great starter into DSLR photography

My first Dslr and so far its been easy to use. I use it mostly for wildlife and car rallies. What sold me mostly was the price compared to the canikons. I havent had any problems so far! I am getting superb shots with its fast shutter speed that I was missing with my P&S.

Purchased this camera as an upgrade from a bridge camera and the difference is amazing. It's easy to use and the low light image quality is amazing compared to my old camera. Images are totally usable all the way up to ISO 3200 and are better quality than my FZ100 at ISO 800. The 300mm lens is excellent in image quality. I could't be happier with this camera.

This is my first DSLR and I'm extremely pleased with the K-r and the kit lenses. The 55-300 is a little loud when focusing. Very happy with the option to us AA batteries when away from reliable electricity

What sold me is that the lenses from my old pentax can be used with this new one!!!!it is light weight and tiny.It is easy to comprehend how to use and really great photos. I especially love the focusing system. Pentax is a high quality camera and lense manufacturer and really don't understand its lack of support here in the states. i take pics of animals and the fast shutter speed is amazing and i think maybe has helped some pups get adopted!5 stars here ...so far :)

take more photoes in one time is necessary for motion picture taking;

I love this camera, particulary that it fits my old pentax analogue lenses. I think for the price, and reviews it has had in AUS that it is a fantastic entry level DSLR. The 55-300 zoom is excellent and worth the smaller cost included as a package (retail individually for 650 over here!)

K-r is a great camera except for intermittent E Dial (thumbwheel switch). [...]Read about this E Dial problem on Pentax forums.Kit zoom 55-300mm is sharp even wide open at 300mm and is light weight. Grip on camera is good with rubber finish. If E Dial problem persists, I'll return camera to Pentax for repair.

I got a k1000 when I graduated high school back in '82. A few years ago, I picked-up a k110D. I loved both of those cameras, but was ready to buy a couple additional lens and wanted to make sure I was set with Pentax before I did. Unfortunately, none of the things I loved about my previous two cameras were present in this model. I appreciated the heft and feel of the K1000 and K110D both of which felt substantial, like real tools. In contrast, despite raves about its build quality, the Kr felt almost as cheep to me as does the kx. On top of that, the first set of shots I took with it were either over-exposed (flash on) or poorly focused (a couple "macro" like shots of all-green flowers). It's easy to say that IQ should be the primary concern, and according to most reviews, I should have been happy with this camera, but if it doesn't beg to be taken out, if it feels cheep of hand, you're not going to use it like you hope. For the record, after trying this camera and much of the micro 4/3 line (gf1, g1, epl1, epl2) I caved and went with one of the Honda Accords of the camera world - the Canon t2i, which I strongly wished to avoid, and couldn't be happier. The build quality isn't as great as with the older Pentaxes, but the IQ is, as much as I hate to say it, heads and shoulders above the other cameras I've tried. And, because the t3's are out - it was not really any more than the Kr. Sorry - I really wanted to love this camera. And, finally, this may be nit-picking - but, in my opinion, matching lens and wheel color is pretty goofy - even in black.

The Pentax K-R offers a wide range of options for those interested in getting into photography. I am glad that I went with the K-R and I am discovering it is a fun learning curve especially seeing as this is my first true DSLR camera. If you did like me and research and research before you spent your hard earned money this camera is well worth the money.
